Assessment Of Sex-Related Differences Of The Osteocyte Lacunar-Canalicular Network Across The Human Lifespan Using Synchrotron Micro-Computed Tomography, Linda Muakkassa

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Osteocytes, the most ubiquitous bone cell type, are responsible for bone maintenance and communication as well as mechanotransduction. Osteocytes reside in spaces within the bone matrix called lacunae, which are used as a proxy for the cells themselves in X-ray imaging. Previous studies have revealed that lacunar volume was reduced in females with increasing age, thus likely contributing to bone frailty and diseases such as osteoporosis. The implications of diseases caused by changes in the bone osteocyte lacunar-canalicular network are not yet fully understood. Since much of the past research revolved around gross bone morphology, this study investigated age and …

The Effects Of Bisphenol F On Embryonic Cardiac Output In Zebrafish, Kyle Monnot Jan 2019

The Effects Of Bisphenol F On Embryonic Cardiac Output In Zebrafish, Kyle Monnot

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Bisphenol F (BPF) is an analog compound of the xenoestrogen bisphenol A (BPA). BPA utilization has decreased dramatically due to its detrimental effects as an endocrine disrupter. In place of BPA, BPF is growing to be a ubiquitous chemical in epoxy resin manufacturing. Recent research has begun to investigate the possible endocrinal effects of BPF as an analog of BPA. This study was performed to examine the potential effects of BPF exposure on cardiac parameters of zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. Embryos were exposed to 50 µg/L BPF for 48 hours, and cardiac parameters (stroke volume, heart rate, and …

Age-Related Changes To Bone Microarchitecture In A Non-Weight Bearing Bone, Tyler Hicks, Janna M. Andronowski, Reed Davis Jan 2019

Age-Related Changes To Bone Microarchitecture In A Non-Weight Bearing Bone, Tyler Hicks, Janna M. Andronowski, Reed Davis

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This study explored the relationship between age, sex and bone microarchitecture. Using high-resolution images, we may better understand the factors affecting different aspects of bone microstructure. Statistical support was provided for the quantitative differences in bone microarchitecture between the sexes. The significant differences noted in Canal Volume (Ca.V), Cortical Porosity (Ca.V/TV), Canal Surface (Ca.S) and Canal Surface to Tissue Volume (Ca.S/TV) offer several interesting points when compared with pre-existing literature. All four parameters listed above that reported significance did so with respect to sex, in that each parameter differed between sexes.

However, no significant difference was noted among age within …
