Calving And Preweaning Growth Performance Traits Of Calves Sired By Charolais, Simmental And Eastern Anatolian Red Bulls, Abdülkadi̇r Özlütürk, Mete Yanar, Naci̇ Tüzemen, Si̇nan Kopuzlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Charolais (C)-, Simmental (S)-, and Eastern Anatolian Red (EAR)-sired calves born in 2 locations in Eastern Anatolia were compared in terms of calving traits and preweaning growth characteristics. Breed of sire effects were significant (P < 0.01) for birth weight, 205-day weaning weight, average daily weight gain from birth to weaning, and some body measurements at birth. S- and C-sired calves were heavier at birth and larger for most body measurements at birth than EAR-sired calves. The C- and S-sired calves also had higher 205-day weight than the EAR-sired calves. Although the level of calving difficulty was higher in the S and C crosses, the differences were not statistically significant. Male calves had significantly (P < 0.01) heavier birth and 205-day weights, higher preweaning average daily gain and greater body measurements (e.g., height at withers, heart girth and cannon bone girth) than females. Location differences were also significant (P < 0.01) for survival rate from birth to weaning, preweaning growth rate and 205-day weight. In conclusion, although C- and S-sired calves performed similarly for most traits, all parameters of the preweaning growth were higher in calves sired by S and C bulls than in calves sired by EAR bulls. Therefore, both C and S could be considered as sire breeds for crossbreeding programs to be implemented in Eastern Anatolia, since these breeds did not cause an adverse influence on the calving and growth traits of the crossbred calves.

Use Of Indirect Excretory/Secretory Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (Es-Elisa) For The Diagnosis Of Natural Fasciola Hepatica Infection In Eosinophilic And Non-Eosinophilic Cattle From Eastern Turkey, Sami̇ Şi̇mşek, Ergün Köroğlu, Armağan Erdem Ütük, Kürşat Altay

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate fasciolosis in a group of eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic cattle in eastern Turkey. All the cattle were examined for antibodies against F. hepatica by modified indirect excretory/secretory enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ES-ELISA). Of the 1200 cattle tested, 164 (13.6%) were found to be eosinophilic by absolute eosinophil counts. Out of the 164 eosinophilic cattle, 121 (73.7%) were found to be positive for fasciolosis by indirect ES-ELISA, while the rate was only 35% among the non-eosinophilic group (P < 0.001). Our data indicate that parasitic infections should be considered an important cause of eosinophilia, particularly in fasciolosis, and the indirect ES-ELISA is useful as a screening test to examine anti-F. hepatica antibodies for the diagnosis of fasciolosis in cattle.

Effects Of Dietary Fluoride Levels On Growth, Serum Indexes And Antioxidant Systems In Growing Pigs, Xin Tao, Zi Rong Xu, Yi Zhen Wang

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Ninety-six growing pigs were used to evaluate the effects of fluoride levels on growth performance, serum indexes and antioxidant systems. Four dietary treatments were formulated by supplementing fluorine (as NaF) to provide the following added fluorine levels: 0, 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg. The results showed that pigs consuming diets with 100 and 150 mg/kg fluorine added had poor growth performance, and most serum biochemical indexes were significantly altered compared to the control (P < 0.05). On the other hand, serum and liver MDA concentration significantly increased due to the addition of 150 mg/kg fluorine (P < 0.05). T-AOC levels and the activities of SOD, GSH-PX, CAT and GST of serum and liver in fluoride added groups decreased, most of which altered significantly (P < 0.05). These results indicated that excessive fluoride ingestion had an adverse effect on animal health and performance.

The quantum energy surgical device (QESD) is a new medical instrument that uses kinetic energy to heat the atoms of argon gas to a high temperature and to apply them on tissues. Unlike other devices operating on the principle of argon plasma technology, the QESD can be used in tissue vaporisation, resection, coagulation and superficial sterilisation of tissues. This study aimed to compare the amount of bleeding, duration of liver incision, duration of the whole operation and histopathological changes occurring on the surface of the incision in partial hepatectomies performed by QESD and bipolar electrocautery. The study was carried out …

In Vitro Effects Of Melatonin On Hyaluronidase Activity And Sperm Motility In Bull Semen, Sadetti̇n Tanyildizi, Tanzer Bozkurt, Osman Çi̇ftçi̇, Fati̇h Saki̇n

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of melatonin on hyaluronidase activity of semen and spermatozoa motility of Holstein bulls were investigation in vitro. Semen samples were divided into 5 equal parts and incubated (v/v) with melatonin at the doses of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mM for 60 min. Percentages of spermatozoa motility, morphological abnormality and hyaluronidase activity of semen were determined at 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 60 min during incubation. Results show that melatonin caused a significant (P < 0.001) decrease in the spermatozoa motility, while causing a significant increase in the hyaluronidase activities of the semen. However, there was no significant difference in the percentages of abnormal spermatozoa when compared with control samples. Doses of 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 mM of melatonin in bull semen decreased the percentage of spermatozoa motility in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The mean percentages of abnormal spermatozoa were not affected by melatonin treatment. However, it caused an increased hyaluronidase activity of bull semen. In conclusion, the existence of melatonin in bull semen has a significant effect on fertilization ability by affecting spermatozoa motility and hyaluronidase activity.

Some Reproductive Parameters And Seminal Plasma Constituents In Relation To Season In Akkaraman And Awassi Rams, Mustafa Gündoğan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to describe seasonal changes in scrotal circumference, sperm motility, sperm concentration, percentage of abnormal spermatozoa and biochemical and enzymatic properties of seminal plasma for 9 months in 10 mature fat-tailed Akkaraman and Awassi breed rams. Scrotal circumference and semen were evaluated monthly from rams and seminal plasma separated from semen to study it. Scrotal circumference, sperm motility and sperm concentration were higher during autumn months. Furthermore, autumn months showed moderate percentage of abnormal spermatozoa. The biochemical analyses of ram seminal plasma indicated that the highest values of total protein, albumin (A), globulin (G), total …
