Agreement Among Six Methods Of Predicting The Anaerobic Lactate Threshold In Elite Cross-Country Skiers, Sean L. Carter, Ian Newhouse Jan 2019

Agreement Among Six Methods Of Predicting The Anaerobic Lactate Threshold In Elite Cross-Country Skiers, Sean L. Carter, Ian Newhouse

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 155-172, 2019. The anaerobic lactate threshold (LTan) is used to prescribe training intensity and measure endurance capacity. The LTan identifies a critical point where small increases in workload result in large increases in blood lactate concentration. LTan is usually predicted through visual inspection of a blood lactate (bLa) vs workload plot. Numerous other methods for predicting LTan exist, and the literature lacks a consensus regarding validity of prediction methods. The purpose of this study was to assess the agreement among visual inspection (VI), maximum distance (Dmax) and modified maximum distance (Dmod) from the lactate …

Lack Of Vaccination Risks, Abigail Sebunia Jan 2019

Lack Of Vaccination Risks, Abigail Sebunia

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This paper is a study regarding how vaccination rates are related to the number of measles cases that occur in a particular state. First, I will review the history of vaccines and the motivations for the refusals of this medical procedure. In addition, I will examine the various regulations regarding vaccinations and which states allow non-medical exemptions for religious or personal reasons. Within my analysis, I will provide examples of recent outbreaks to represent the extent of this current dilemma. Furthermore, I will offer potential solutions to mitigate measles outbreaks and the science regarding Herd Immunity Thresholds (HIT) to limit …

Correlation Between Mehlich-3 And Ammonium Acetate Extractable Potassium In Kansas Soils, B. Rutter, D. A. Ruiz Diaz Jan 2019

Correlation Between Mehlich-3 And Ammonium Acetate Extractable Potassium In Kansas Soils, B. Rutter, D. A. Ruiz Diaz

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

The K-State Research and Extension Soil Testing Laboratory has been using Mehlich-3 soil test procedures for phosphorus (P) extraction, and ammonium acetate extraction for potassium (K). Previous research in other states has shown a strong correlation between these two tests for K, but data correlating the two in Kansas soils have been limited. A study was performed on soils from across the state to investigate the relationship between these two methods. A strong positive correlation was observed (r = 0.99) across the wide range of soil types, pH, and fertility conditions represented in the sample set. Linear regression suggests a …

Impact Of Physical Activity On Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Marshall Schwartz Jan 2019

Impact Of Physical Activity On Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Marshall Schwartz

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Type 2 diabetes mellites has become an increasingly prevalent worldwide epidemic. The tremendous economic burden, coupled with the numerous secondary risks associated with the disease, have encouraged researchers to search for causes as well as treatment methods. This research paper focuses on the effect of physical activity as a preventative measure for those at risk for diabetes and as a treatment method for those already diagnosed with the disease. The articles collected included meta-analysis, randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, surveys, etc. The studies that were analyzed have indicated an inverse relationship between physical activity and type 2 diabetes. Since there …
