Corticosterone Levels And The Critical Period In Imprinting Behavior Of Domestic Chicks, Lorraine Feldman

Biology ETDs

The following research was undertaken to monitor a glucocorticoid corticosterone to determine whether or not a reduction in glucocorticoids occurs during the critical period of imprinting behavior. Two groups of domestic chicks (Schaffer white Leghorns) were incubated, hatched and maintained under brooding conditions prior to imprinting procedures. Chicks were first divided into seven age groups, four hour intervals, beginning at hatching. The critical period of imprinting behavior was established with Group I. Success of imprinting training in this group was tested 24 hours after the training sessions. The second group provided blood samples taken after imprinting training sessions; they were …

Phenetic Structure And Zoogeography Of North American Insectivorous Bat Faunas, Gregory Michael Shum Dec 1975

Phenetic Structure And Zoogeography Of North American Insectivorous Bat Faunas, Gregory Michael Shum

Biology ETDs

Eighteen morphological features were measured for 103 species of insectivorous bats found throughout North America. These characters were standardized to a mean of zero and a standard deviation of unity. Using these morphological characters, thirty-one distinct faunas, ranging from a Boreal Forest fauna with three species to a Wet Tropical fauna with 50 species, were analyzed in an 18-dimensional mathematical hyperspace with the numerical taxonomic techniques of distance, correlation and principal components.

The results show that tropical faunas occupy a greater morphological hypervolume than temperate-zone faunas. Morphological packing is not greater in tropical faunas, and it appears that a limiting …

An Operation Research Approach To The Economic Optimization Of Kraft Pulping, Robert E. Packwood Dec 1975

An Operation Research Approach To The Economic Optimization Of Kraft Pulping, Robert E. Packwood

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The first attempt to apply operations research to the kraft industry came in 1959 by C.W. Carroll at the Institute of Paper Chemistry. Carroll developed a pulping rate expression and incorporated engineering balances to complete his mathematical model. Carroll then developed an optimization technique to optimize kraft mill economic performance.

This work develops the mathematical model utilizing a different pulping rate expression and further develops certain areas (e.g. recovery boiler, lime kiln, and washer models) utilizing regression equations obtained from literature and material and energy balances in an approach much like that of Boyle and Tobias.

An attempt was made …

Studies Of N⁵, N¹⁰-Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase From Porcine Kidney And Mouse L1210-Induced Tumor Tissues, Purification And Interaction With Antifolates, David W. Jayme

Theses and Dissertations

Methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase has been purified 1000-fold from porcine kidney and 400-fold from mouse L1210-induced tumor tissue by classical methods. The enzyme preparations have been demonstrated to be essentially free of contaminating methionine synthetase and serine transhydroxymethylase activity. Studies of the kinetic properties of the kidney and tumor enzymes, with respect to the reverse reaction using N5-methyl tetrahydrofolate as the variable substrate, have indicated Km values of 2.0 and 2.4 x 10-4 M, respectively. Inhibition of this key branch point enzyme in folate metabolism by a number of antimetabolites indicates that several of these antifolate compounds exhibit enzyme inhibition superior …

The Role Of Zinc In Dihydroorotase, Pamela S. Gilchrist

Dissertations and Theses

Dihydroorotase (4,4—dihydroorotic acid amidolyase, EC 3.5.2.3.) which catalyzes the reversible cyclization of N-carbamyl-L-aspartate to L-dihydroorotate has been purified from orotate-grown Clostridium oroticum. The enzyme is stable in 0.3 M sodium chloride and 10 µ ZnSO4. Sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis indicates the enzyme to be composed of two identical subunits each with a molecular weight of 58,000 + 6000. Dihydroorotase is shown to be a zinc-containing metalloenzyme with 2 g atoms of zinc per 58,000 g of protein. The role of zinc in dihydroorotase is discussed.

Melanin In The Longnose Gar, Lepisosteus Osseus, George William Minson Aug 1975

Melanin In The Longnose Gar, Lepisosteus Osseus, George William Minson

Master's Theses

Examination was made of the melanophores of three Lepisosteus osseus (longnose gar), one dark, one intermediate, and one normal in pigmentation. Melanophore counts were made per mm2 from anterior, mid, and posterior areas of both the dorsal and ventral surfaces of each of the three fish. The data were tested with a four-factor analysis of variance. By microscopic examination the melanophores were classified as to branching in the sample areas. Neither number of melanophores nor degree of branching explained divergence in pigmentation. However, divergence was attributed to the melanosome color and concentration in the melanophores.

The Effects Of Topical Nitrogen Mustard On The Pigment System In Pet/Wmr Mouse Epidermis, Ronald Lee Salisbury Aug 1975

The Effects Of Topical Nitrogen Mustard On The Pigment System In Pet/Wmr Mouse Epidermis, Ronald Lee Salisbury

Master's Theses

Miniature melanocytes have been observed scattered among the typical melanocytes in the skin of the PET/Wmr mouse strain, They are weakly DOPA reactive and their cell bodies and nuclei are one quarter the size of those in typical melanocytes, Both populations reach a peak during the first postnatal week and then gradually disappear within the following three weeks. The miniatures appear very early and are among the last cells to disappear. During the first postnatal week, their population remains relatively constant against a radically changing population of typical melanocytes. That they may represent a stage in the development of typical …

Fibrous Filler As An Extender For Titanium Dioxide – Methods Of Filler Addition, James G. Shaner Aug 1975

Fibrous Filler As An Extender For Titanium Dioxide – Methods Of Filler Addition, James G. Shaner

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The paper industry today faces higher costs in such fillers as titanium dioxide. The need for extenders to add to the pulp slurries with titanium dioxide is ever increasing. The extender must not lower the strength properties of the paper to any large extent and must yield nearly the same optical properties as titanium dioxide. Fibrous filler has proven to be a filler which meets these requirements. There exists, however, several different methods for the addition of the fillers to the pulp stock. Each of these methods give different results in the final sheet of paper. It was found from …

The Effects Of Certain Steroids On The Growth Of Slime Mold, Physarum Polycephalum, Ching-Bun Paul Chen Aug 1975

The Effects Of Certain Steroids On The Growth Of Slime Mold, Physarum Polycephalum, Ching-Bun Paul Chen

Theses and Dissertations

The cortex of vertebrate adrenal glands secretes two major groups of hormones--glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids, which have an oxygen atom at carbon number 11, increase the rate of gluconeogenesis and increase the mobilization of lipids in mammals (Turner and Bagnara 1971). At the same time there is a decrease in protein synthesis. This latter effect may be homologous to a decrease in fibroblast growth in culture in the presence of certain corticosteroids (Ruhmann and Berliner 1965). The main function of mineralocorticoids, on the other hand, is to retain sodium ions. They have little or no gluconeogenic activity. Interestingly, however, these …

Ultrastructural Investigations Of The Host-Parasite Interface Of Pumpkin Cotyledons And The Fungus Sclerotinia Sclerotiorum, Mark Edward Richtsteig

Theses and Dissertations

Pumkin seedlings (Cucurbita maxima) were inoculated with the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary. Center regions of non-infected and infected cotyledons of various lengths were cut into 1 x 2 mm strips and processed for ultrastructural investigations. Complementary portions of opposing non-infected cotyledons were also processed as control tissue, and contained fewer storage products in cells than cotyledons of comparable size from non-infected plants. Young non-infected cells contained distinct lipid bodies, protein bodies and electron dense inlusions which were translocated out of older cells by abundant plasmodesmata. Initally, infected cells became plasmolyzed, followed by breakdown of the cytoplasm. Host cells …
