Aspects Of Light In Photography, Christopher Seiberling Dec 1975

Aspects Of Light In Photography, Christopher Seiberling

Art & Art History ETDs

Light is not only a basic condition for photographic process but also a versatile tool for photographic image-making and a metaphorical agent for photographic expression. In a cross-cultural context, there are universal but complex religious interpretations of light phenomena; light has been associated with mystical experience and alchemical process and has been symbolic of enlightenment or salvation. In literature light implies many ideas, e.g. the "colorless all-color of atheism" (Helville) and the "inexplicable" human condition (Beckett). Current attitudes toward light, generated by advances in technology, dominate fading religious concerns.

Among twentieth century photographers, C.H. White and George Seeley used light …

Corticosterone Levels And The Critical Period In Imprinting Behavior Of Domestic Chicks, Lorraine Feldman Dec 1975

Corticosterone Levels And The Critical Period In Imprinting Behavior Of Domestic Chicks, Lorraine Feldman

Biology ETDs

The following research was undertaken to monitor a glucocorticoid corticosterone to determine whether or not a reduction in glucocorticoids occurs during the critical period of imprinting behavior. Two groups of domestic chicks (Schaffer white Leghorns) were incubated, hatched and maintained under brooding conditions prior to imprinting procedures. Chicks were first divided into seven age groups, four hour intervals, beginning at hatching. The critical period of imprinting behavior was established with Group I. Success of imprinting training in this group was tested 24 hours after the training sessions. The second group provided blood samples taken after imprinting training sessions; they were …

Optimal Linear Coding For A Multichannel System, Kyong-Hwa Lee Dec 1975

Optimal Linear Coding For A Multichannel System, Kyong-Hwa Lee

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This paper is concerned with the problem of obtaining the optimal linear vector coding (transformation) method that matches an r-dimensional vector signal and a k-dimensional channel under a given channel power constraint. the encoder converts the r correlated random variables into r independent random variables and selects at most k independent random variables which correspond to the k largest eigenvalues of the signal covarience matrix Q. The encoder reinserts cross-correlation into the k random variables in such a way that the largest eigenvalue of Q is assigned to the smallest eigenvalue of the channel noise covarience matrix R and the …

Sherwood Anderson, Charles Burchfield, And The American Small Town, Jerome Paul Shea Dec 1975

Sherwood Anderson, Charles Burchfield, And The American Small Town, Jerome Paul Shea

American Studies ETDs

This study explores the American small town, located (for the study's purposes) principally in the turn-of-the-century Midwest, and its reflection in the works of the American writer, Sherwood Anderson, and the American painter, Charles Burchfield.

A large portion of the study is devoted to the small town itself: its place in our history and in our myths. To that end, many pages are devoted to the highlights of American history from 1875 to 1925, to some of the representative phenomena of that period, and to our geographical myths (e.g., "out West" versus "back East") which came together in the Midwest. …

Substantive And Ideological Aspects Of Science: An Analysis Of The Velikovsky Controversy, Robert E. Mcaulay Dec 1975

Substantive And Ideological Aspects Of Science: An Analysis Of The Velikovsky Controversy, Robert E. Mcaulay

Sociology ETDs

Conventional conceptions of Science hold that assessment of scientific ideas takes place without extraneous economic, social or cultural interference. Thus, while metaphysical-cultural beliefs may be integral to a theory's genesis, evaluation of scientific merit is seen to be largely based on the empirical evidence provided by observation and experiment. In fact, however, without impugning scientific knowledge it is possible to demonstrate that both substantive and ideological factors may regularly influence the course of scientific practice. Analysis of the reception afforded the ideas of Immanuel Velikovsky reveal that, as in the case of the Copernican Revolution, extra-scientific influences may intertwine with …

The Rock Houses Of Fredericksburg, Texas 1846-1910, Sylvia Lorraine Rusche Cook Dec 1975

The Rock Houses Of Fredericksburg, Texas 1846-1910, Sylvia Lorraine Rusche Cook

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Fredericksburg, Texas was founded in 1846 by German settlers under the sponsorship of the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas. The Society, composed of a group of German noblemen, was to provide the immigrants with transportation, land, and assistance in making settlements, and the settlers were faced with considerable difficulties after the Society's collapse. The immigrants were primarily farmers and village craftsmen from the central uplands of Germany, a hilly region which bore a striking resemblance to the Fredericksburg area's. But the dissimilarities, the settlement areas' higher, widely fluctuating temperatures, arid its erratic rainfall caused by its …

Architecture/Planning Paradigms: Beyond The Stars, The Wizard Of Oz And The Other, Susan Dreier Dec 1975

Architecture/Planning Paradigms: Beyond The Stars, The Wizard Of Oz And The Other, Susan Dreier

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This thesis describes a process or investigation of the presumptions that structure the attitudes and interactions in the field of architecture/planning. Architecture/planning is described, in relation to defined criteria, as a system which maintains academic and professional hierarchies and white perpetuates itself and its self interests. The resulting definitions of problems, solutions and roles within the field are directly linked to the controlling social, political and economic interests that are the status quo. Certain mechanisms direct and maintain the activities of the field in the process of development. For example, the parameters of the low-income housing problem have been traditionally …

Phenetic Structure And Zoogeography Of North American Insectivorous Bat Faunas, Gregory Michael Shum Dec 1975

Phenetic Structure And Zoogeography Of North American Insectivorous Bat Faunas, Gregory Michael Shum

Biology ETDs

Eighteen morphological features were measured for 103 species of insectivorous bats found throughout North America. These characters were standardized to a mean of zero and a standard deviation of unity. Using these morphological characters, thirty-one distinct faunas, ranging from a Boreal Forest fauna with three species to a Wet Tropical fauna with 50 species, were analyzed in an 18-dimensional mathematical hyperspace with the numerical taxonomic techniques of distance, correlation and principal components.

The results show that tropical faunas occupy a greater morphological hypervolume than temperate-zone faunas. Morphological packing is not greater in tropical faunas, and it appears that a limiting …

An Interdisciplinary Approach To The Art Experience On An Urban University Central Campus, George Loring Sanders Dec 1975

An Interdisciplinary Approach To The Art Experience On An Urban University Central Campus, George Loring Sanders

Architecture and Planning ETDs

PROBLEM

As an interest in art appreciation by the general population grows it becomes more and more important that display techniques expand tremendously so as to allow the largest diversity of persons possible to participate. The construction of university art museums has been extensive in recent years. However there has been no comprehensive body of work studying the implications of a project designed to totally immerse art experience in the educative process on a university campus. A university campus, by its very nature, is an elite institution. The problem then becomes how to make it less so by visually and …

Efficacy Of Bunamidine Hydrochloride Against Immature And Mature Stages Of Echinococcus Granulosus, Lauritz A. Jensen Dec 1975

Efficacy Of Bunamidine Hydrochloride Against Immature And Mature Stages Of Echinococcus Granulosus, Lauritz A. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

A study was conducted to determine the efficacy of bunamidine hydrochloride against the immature and mature stages of Echinococcus granulosus found in Utah. Twenty-seven dogs were obtained from local animal shelters and experimentally infected with the parasite. The drug was given at dosage levels of 25 mg/kg to 50 mg/kg of bodyweight. It was from 85.9 to 98.8% effective against the immature stage, and 100% effective against the adult stage. The results suggest that this drug can feasibly be used under field conditions where hydatid disease is endemic.

A Precipitation Model And Experimental Correlation With Various Properties Of Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate, Thomas Rivera Dec 1975

A Precipitation Model And Experimental Correlation With Various Properties Of Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate, Thomas Rivera

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A continuous precipitation method for the preparation of crystalline pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) has been developed. The process involves the precipitation of PETN from an acetone solution by the addition of water in a static mixer. The principal independent variable is the ratio, R, of the acetone-PETN solution flow rate to the flow rate of water.

A mathematical model based on dispersed plug-flow equations adequately represents the physical process. The relationships developed can be used to predict particle size distributions, two explosion properties of PETN, and estimate the effective kinetics involved in the precipitation process. The mass-weighted mean particle size, L, …

Cognitive Manipulation Of Test Anxiety Through False Emotional Feedback And Modeling, John Russell Jacobson Dec 1975

Cognitive Manipulation Of Test Anxiety Through False Emotional Feedback And Modeling, John Russell Jacobson

The Senate Small Business Committee During World War Ii, Catherine Neff Bugg Dec 1975

The Senate Small Business Committee During World War Ii, Catherine Neff Bugg

Student Work

That small business was essential to the American way of life was an unquestionable tenet of both liberals and conservatives in the government prior to and during the Second World War. Both political factions also agreed that the war needed to be won and that great sacrifices would be necessary in order to achieve that victory. Beyond these two basic areas of agreement, however, great divergence as to the methods to be used for conserving and protecting small business while fighting an all-out war for survival soon became apparent. Nowhere was this conflict more obvious than in the formation of …

The Ideology Of Growth And The Utopia Of Equilibrium, John C. Cunningham Dec 1975

The Ideology Of Growth And The Utopia Of Equilibrium, John C. Cunningham

Student Work

This study focuses on the ongoing social processes of theory formation. It is a description of how individuals as members of a concrete social group think about social systems, share their world views within their group, explain their ideas to others, and attempt to produce realities corresponding to these ideas. The types of individuals under consideration are "policymakers" or "decisionmaker," and the substantive issue is that of theories about global trends of world growth, particularly economic growth. The study depicts the procress of social change as a sonstruction arising out of interaction between social groups with conflicting visions of past, …

Locus Of Control And Aspiration In Feminist And Traditional Women, Shelagh Emmott Dec 1975

Locus Of Control And Aspiration In Feminist And Traditional Women, Shelagh Emmott

Student Work

The concept of locus of control has been a widely-researched one in recent years. An outgrowth of Rotter's (1954) social learning theory, it has found application in the prediction of a diversity of behaviors, some, such as achievement behavior and resistance to conformity pressure, of considerable social import. Locus of control has been conceived of as an expectancy variable concerning the individual's beliefs as to the amount of control he exerts over important reinforcements; expectations predicated upon the validation of experience over the course of time. At its internal pole, the construct refers to the generalized expectation that reinforcements are …

Parental Attitudes Toward Their Retarded Child, Barbara Burman Bronston Dec 1975

Parental Attitudes Toward Their Retarded Child, Barbara Burman Bronston

Student Work

The attitudes parents have towards their retarded child are formed by many people. Previous contact and knowledge about mental retardation is one. The others are, contacts with the medical profession, reactions from other family members, and how the community supports and helps this group of people. Guilt and anger that parents have also contribute to their attitudes. In many cases the parents will feel a groundless personal guilt. (World Health Organization, 1954).
