Localization And Binding Characteristics Of Kaposi's Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus Bcl-2 Protein In The Prevention Of Apoptosis, Erin T. St.Angelo

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is the causative agent of various diseases, and it encodes a Bcl-2 homolog, KS-Bcl-2. The Bcl-2 family is important in regulating cellular apoptosis. Pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family members promote apoptosis through mitochondrial pore formation by Bak and Bax, or through BH3 only domain activators and sensitizers. Anti-apoptotic members, such as cellular Bcl-2 prevent apoptosis through interactions with pro-apoptotic proteins, for instance inhibiting pore formation by binding to Bak and/or Bax. Even though, KS-Bcl-2 has been shown to have an anti-apoptotic function like its homolog, it does not bind to either Bak or Bax, and little is known …

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is the primary component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria and is responsible for the majority of inflammatory effects of infections from Gram-negative bacteria. To gain better understanding of the effects that postnatal age has on the inflammatory response, pups were randomly assigned to be treated with 250 µg/kg of LPS or saline at postnatal day (P) 1, P21, and P70. Two hours post stimulation, the pups were sacrificed and their livers were harvested for total RN A extraction. This paper claims that African Americans are making consistent progress in college or university enrollment and degree attainment. These gains in educational attainment have led to a substantial proportion of African Americans to rise in many important sectors of society, such as business, the military and politics. However, there is a concern that unlike the Asian and Hispanic populations in the United States, proportionally, the African American population is not increasing as rapidly. This slow annual growth of the African American population may have both economic and political implications in the years and decades to come.

Bacteriorhodopsin (bR) is a highly expressed transmembrane protein that acts as a light-driven proton pump converting light energy into a proton gradient. The extraordinary levels of expression achieved (15-30 mg per liter of culture) are a result of very efficient biogenesis that originates from molecular information encoded in the bacterio-opsin gene {bop) (1). DNA sequence analysis and predictive folding algorithms suggest that the first twenty-five bases of the bop gene mRNA can form a secondary structural element (a "stem-loop").
