Fungicides And Insecticides For Control Of Rose Pests, Paul F. Webb Jan 1975

Fungicides And Insecticides For Control Of Rose Pests, Paul F. Webb

Masters Theses

The author was requested by a representative of the Ortho Chemical Company to test various fungicides and insecticides on hybrid tea roses.

Roses are one of the most time consuming and most difficult ornamentals to manage due to several diseases and insects that attack them. Two of the first and foremost skills that the author had to acquire were the proper planting and the subsequent care of roses.

The purpose of the research project was to compare the effectiveness of experimental products with presently available fungicides and insecticides. Before new chemicals can be marketed much data must be collected to …

A Statistical Approach To The Study Of The Ecosystems Of Seven Ponds In East-Central Illinois, Gregory Lee Orr Jan 1975

A Statistical Approach To The Study Of The Ecosystems Of Seven Ponds In East-Central Illinois, Gregory Lee Orr

Masters Theses

Gross primary productivity, heterotrophic bacterial numbers, and net phytoplankton densities of seven ponds in Coles County, Illinois, were studied in relation to physical, chemical, and biological habitat variables (light intensity and duration, turbidity, water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, production, bacteria, and phytoplankton). Ten observations were made for each pond (except where otherwise noted) from 17 June through 25 August 1974. Stepwise multiple linear regression analyses of the data were used in order to determine those environmental factors which were important in predicting (i.e., significantly correlated with) bacterial and phytoplankton densities, and production. A multiple linear regression equation …

Parasites Of Channel Catfish In Illinois Hatcheries, Charles Dale Meryman Jan 1975

Parasites Of Channel Catfish In Illinois Hatcheries, Charles Dale Meryman

Masters Theses

Ninety channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) were trapped during September 1973 through April 1974 at three hatcheries located at Worden, Centralia, and Kinmundy, Illinois. All were examined for parasites and 87 were parasitized. The trematodes Azygia angusticauda and Neascus sp. were found in the gastrointestinal system and Cleidodiscus floridanus and Dactylogyrus sp. were attached to the gills. Five cestode genera, including Bothriocephalus sp., Corallobothrium giganteum, Eubothrium sp., Haplobothrium sp., and Proteocephalus ambloplitis were present. Rhabdochona sp. was the only nematode found. Protozoans; Costia sp., Myxobolus sp., Scyphidia macropodia and Trichodina discoidea and one kind of glochidium were observed. …

A Faunal Study Of Illinois Silphidae (Coleoptera), Brian Baldwin Jan 1975

A Faunal Study Of Illinois Silphidae (Coleoptera), Brian Baldwin

Masters Theses

A faunal study of the family Silphidae in Illinois was made through examination of over 1400 specimens. A brief history of the taxonomy of the family and a description of silphid ecology was presented. Keys to the tribes, genera, and species of adult Silphidae occurring in Illinois were divised. Four genera and sixteen species of silphids are described, supplemented with drawings and distribution maps.

A Photomicrographic Guide To The Saprolegniaceae Of Illinois, Ronald L. Butler Jan 1975

A Photomicrographic Guide To The Saprolegniaceae Of Illinois, Ronald L. Butler

Masters Theses

There is a paucity of information concerning the occurrence and distribution of the Saprolegniaceae of Illinois. These fungi, commonly called "water molds", are of particular interest as many are potential parasites of fish, crustaceans, and other aquatic plant and animal life. It is of considerable interest to students of the fungi and of practical value to the fisheries biologists and environmentalists to have available a means of identification for these organisms.

This paper provides a descriptive and photomicrographic account of the Saprolegniaceae of Illinois. Included herein are dichotomous keys to the genera of this family as well as generic descriptions …

Treflan And The Oxygen Consumption Of Green Sunfish (Lepomis Cyanellus), Barbara Jo Warner Jan 1975

Treflan And The Oxygen Consumption Of Green Sunfish (Lepomis Cyanellus), Barbara Jo Warner

Masters Theses

Oxygen consumption rates of 51 green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus, Rafinesque) were monitored over five hours exposure to Treflan E.C. concentrations of 0, 0.32, 0.56, 1.0, and 2.0 ppm. There was a great variation in the responses of the fish at each concentration; and Student's t-tests revealed no significant differences. However, graphs of the mean hourly oxygen consumption rates showed certain trends. During the fifth hour of exposure, there appears to be an acclimation to the Treflan at concentrations of 0.32 and 0.56 ppm; but no such acclimation at the higher concentrations of 1.0 and 2.0 ppm. Hourly oxygen …

Homing Studies Of Bank Swallows In Eastern Illinois, Jennifer Eileen Hagerstrom Jan 1975

Homing Studies Of Bank Swallows In Eastern Illinois, Jennifer Eileen Hagerstrom

Masters Theses

A series of homing experiments using 39 color-marked Bank Swallows (Riparia riparia) were carried out in eastern Illinois during the summer of 1975. The swallow colony was located four km east-northeast of Charleston, Illinois at the Charleston Stone Quarry. Eight release sites were located in the four compass directions from the home colony at distances of 14.4 to 32.3 km away.

The colony was approached before dawn and swallows were captured using tube traps. Birds were color-marked, banded, and taken in individual bags to the release site by automobile. Cloud cover, wind velocity, wind direction, and orientation behavior …

Pesticide Residues In The Illinois Wild Turkey, John M. Bridges Jan 1975

Pesticide Residues In The Illinois Wild Turkey, John M. Bridges

Masters Theses

Adipose tissue from 55 turkeys, killed during the 1974 hunting season in southern Illinois, was grouped by age and location of the birds, and the pesticide concentrations in them were determined by gas/liquid chromatography. Twelve different pesticides were identified in the samples with only four, total DDT, heptachlor epoxide, toxaphene, and linuron, being present in all samples. Concentrations ranged from 0.02 ppm to 0.88 ppm.

The Histology Of The Pineal Gland In Odocoileus Virginianus, Terry Michael De Villiers Jan 1975

The Histology Of The Pineal Gland In Odocoileus Virginianus, Terry Michael De Villiers

Masters Theses

A total of 26 pineal glands from the white-tailed deer were histologically examined. Five different stains were utilized to determine various cell types present in pineal tissue. Connective tissue septa divide the pineal gland into incompletely separated lobules which are supplied by a very extensive vascular system. The pinealocyte is the most numerous cell in the gland and is most easily recognized by a prominent nucleus approximately 6-8 microns in diameter. The pinealocyte cytoplasm contains many minute granules. A distinct difference was noted in the histology of the oldest age deer pineal (age 7 years) when globular granules were observed …

Method Of Karyotype Determination For Cercaria: Application To Family Azygiidae (Trematoda), James Everett Mick Jan 1975

Method Of Karyotype Determination For Cercaria: Application To Family Azygiidae (Trematoda), James Everett Mick

Masters Theses

The development of a method for karyotype determination of cercaria provides a basis for comparative karyotype analysis between cercaria and adult, possibly eliminating the need for infection experiments for positive identification of cercaria. Snails (Goniobasis livescens) were collected from below the spillway of Lake Charleston, on the Embarras River, near Charleston, Illinois. Of a total of 196 snails collected 42 (21.5%) were found to be infected with undetermined furcocyticercous cercariae. Infected snails were detected through isolation procedure. From the infected snails, emerged and non-emerged forms of the cercaria were recovered. Whole mounts of the cercaria were made and …
