Employment Opportunities For New Academic Librarians: Assessing The Entry Level Jobs, Sudeshna Karmakar
Employment Opportunities For New Academic Librarians: Assessing The Entry Level Jobs, Sudeshna Karmakar
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Finding a position in a library can be challenging for recent Library and Information Science (LIS) graduates. While LIS students are often encouraged to seek out experience, network, and improve upon their technology skills in hopes of better improving their odds in the job market, little research exists to support this anecdotal advice. This study quantifies the academic and work experiences of recent LIS graduates in order to provide a better understanding of what factors most significantly influence the outcome of their academic library job searches. The survey results demonstrate that the job outlook is most positive for candidates, who …

Parkview Library Reports
This report was created to quantify and qualify the value of historic archives managed by the Parkview Library within the Institutional Repository (IR) and/or our internal platform Sharepoint.
Parkview Hospital has a long history and with an accumulation of documents and photographs. These historic materials (digital and physical) reside between three Parkview departments: Marketing, Media Services, and the Resource Library. The Parkview Resource Library receives two or three requests for archival materials annually. While this is obviously a small frequency, the request is coming from our largest stakeholders in the organization. Plus the process of quickly retrieving these historic materials …

Specialized Regional Conferences Support The Professional Development Of Subject Librarians: A 5-Year Analysis Of The Great Lakes Science Boot Camps For Librarians, Bethany S. Mcgowan, Jennifer Hart, Karen Hum
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Conference attendance can play an important role in supporting the professional development of subject librarians by offering opportunities that allow librarians to learn about new services, strategies, and technologies while growing and maintaining professional networks. However, barriers such as accessibility challenges, budgetary and resource restrictions, difficulty measuring learning gains, and difficulty measuring the value of professional development when applied to the job can restrict opportunities for many librarians. Specialized regional conferences have the potential to reduce many of these barriers. How can librarians, library administrators and conference organizers quantify the value of regional conference attendance as an accessible means for …

Library science education in Nigeria has experienced several stages of developments and changes in curricula. There is some research on the history of library science education in Nigeria. However, little research has been conducted on curriculum development per se from a historical perspective. This study examines the historical and current status of curriculum development in Nigeria. It compares the changes in curricula from various stages and analyzes the factors influencing the curriculum development. The main problems in curriculum development are discussed. Suggestions and recommendations are helpful for library schools to successfully adapt themselves to the digital age and to develop …

2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies, like many other libraries and archives, collects, preserves, and provides access to dissertations as original works of student scholarship in conjunction with degrees awarded by the University. The processes of collecting and preserving student scholarship becomes difficult as new ETD models and formats force existing workflows and platforms to adapt. This talk will identify emerging preservation and long-term access challenges associated with new forms of scholarship and will borrow from the digital preservation field to identify innovative and collaborative approaches for addressing these challenges.

2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dissertations represent different doctoral cultures as well as artifacts of research achievement. Beyond general contours identifiable as contribution to knowledge, the dissertation is as much symbol as acculturation within disciplinary cultures. Each dissertation represents training, discovery, unique contribution, as well as the acculturative properties inherent to the dissertation’s liminal process and raison d'être. This exploratory presentation challenges us to consider what the dissertation is and how it may vary in purpose and form.

Influences On The Choice Of Library Science Graduate Study: An Examination Of Cultural And Social Capital, Economic Factors, Gender, And Race, Rhonda K. Armstrong
Ed.D. Dissertations
The demographics of the library and information profession in the United States, which is primarily White and female, do not reflect the diversity of the population and those libraries serve. To further the understanding of who chooses library science graduate programs and how one might take social justice actions for more diversity, this study employed a post-positivist, quantitative study blended with critical theory. The study used Perna’s college choice model, which considers cultural capital, social capital, and economic factors as influential on college choice decisions. The study utilized a secondary data set, the Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study 2008/2012 data …

One Journal Issue, Two Activities, Three Views: Information Creation As A Process, Nancy R. Curtis
Library Staff Publications
Since we have shifted most of our serial subscriptions from print to digital format, our students encounter “scientific journals” as abstractions, not as the tangible objects familiar to their instructors. Furthermore, since students interact with journals via bibliographic databases, they lose access to visual cues indicating the nature of individual works. I presented two learning activities to early career undergraduate science students. The first introduced them to different online manifestations of the same issue of a scientific journal, and prompted them to consider how each format meets specific information needs. In the second, students examined a variety of information products …

The Use Of Reflective Questioning As A Peer Coaching Strategy In An Asynchronous Online Cognitive Apprenticeship, Jennifer Ashley Scott Brown
STEMPS Theses & Dissertations
The cognitive apprenticeship framework melds situated, authentic learning with social learning theory. The learning strategies included in a cognitive apprenticeship are modeling, coaching, scaffolding, articulation, reflection, and exploration. Previous research indicates that the most beneficial strategy for the learner is coaching, and is also the most time-consuming strategy for the instructor. However, no previous research has been conducted to determine which coaching strategies can be utilized in order to lessen the burden on the instructor, while being beneficial to the learner.
The purpose of this study was to explore the use of guided reflective questions as a strategy for enhancing …

From The Aasl Standards To The Acrl Framework: Higher Education Shifts In Pedagogical Strategies, Jenni Burke
Scholarship and Professional Work
How does the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education function in relation to the information literacy standards used with students in K-12 schools and how does it inform academic librarians’ pedagogical strategies? While these documents are strongly related, there are large differences in their theoretical approach to information literacy, which are revealed in their definitions, treatment of dispositions, and approach to measurement. This leaves gaps in instructional approaches and student learning. Understanding these differences enables librarians in higher education to leverage the Framework to teach all students and fill in instructional gaps, regardless of how much information literacy instruction …

Generally created by individual librarians and anchored to a physical space, library displays are often static, limited, and fleeting. However, these displays can evolve into wider, more affective, multi-dimensional, 21st century, virtual spaces by incorporating collaborative discourse between multiple librarians, by reaching out to the community for content, and by using technological tools, such as email, Google Drive, Google Images, QR codes, and social media. This paper presents a case study of the life of a library display from inception through execution. By pooling the skills, experiences, and stakeholder networks of two librarians and an MLIS intern, the library’s December …
