Operations Research And Organizational Decision-Making In Academic Libraries, Therrin C. Dahlin
Operations Research And Organizational Decision-Making In Academic Libraries, Therrin C. Dahlin
Faculty Publications
Operations research entered the library scene in the 1960s and '70s, and has attracted much interest from librarians. This paper examines the assumptions made by selected operations researchers concerning organizational decision-making in academic libraries. The assumptions then are compared to Richard L. Daft's contingency framework of organizational decision-making to determine the appropriateness of applying operations research assumptions and methods to organizational decision-making in an academic library setting. A review of the operations researchers' assumptions and Daft's framework suggests that the operations research approach may be appropriately applied to only a relatively narrow category of problems in academic libraries that match …

Paradigm Restrictions On Interdisciplinary Research Into Librarianship, Jeffrey Gatten
Paradigm Restrictions On Interdisciplinary Research Into Librarianship, Jeffrey Gatten
LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations
Scholars are becoming increasingly interdisciplinary in their approach to research, but traditional structures of knowledge within the social sciences may limit their ability to view a phenomenon in its entirety. This citation study examines the extent to which interdisciplinary research into librarianship is restricted by paradigms. The study uses library science and sociology journal articles that address the sociological aspect of libraries. The data indicate that interdisciplinary research into the applied discipline of librarianship is inhibited by paradigms.

The Development Of The Jimmy Carter Library's Audiovisual Collection, David J. Stanhope
The Development Of The Jimmy Carter Library's Audiovisual Collection, David J. Stanhope
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
The audio-visual (AV) collection of a presidential library offers the world a unique record of the life and times of a United States President and his administration. The nature of presidential AV records also creates a considerable challenge for the Office of Presidential Libraries within the National Archives and Records Administration. To meet the needs of the president, the public, and future scholars, special archival policies and practices must be implemented when dealing with presidential AV records. The development of the Jimmy Carter Library AV Collection presents an excellent case study of the policies, programs, and problems involved in administering …

Short Subjects: Archival Automation: A Brief Look At Two Systems, Frank T. Wheeler
Short Subjects: Archival Automation: A Brief Look At Two Systems, Frank T. Wheeler
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
While computers and automation have seemingly taken over, they have slowly and painfully crept into the archives. Automated on-line catalogs are replacing the manual card catalog and control over numerous collections and record groups has become easier. Some have argued that automation is not a positive step for an archives. These arguments will lessen as archivists begin to integrate automated systems into their daily routines of cataloging and collection maintenance.
