Photomicrographs, The Npr 100, And Student Teaching: Library Liaison Ideas That Really Work, Katherine Furlong, Janelle L. Wertzberger
All Musselman Library Staff Works
In 1997, Gettysburg College's Musselman Library revived a dormant liaison program. Librarians were assigned to each department and program on campus and expected to serve as the first point of library contact for the teaching faculty.
Some core communications and activities emerged that we now encourage every liaison to practice; attending department meetings, sending reviews of new materials, tracking faculty book orders, and visiting faculty offices are seen as standard liaison activities.
We were delighted to find that almost every librarian had some unique and interesting experiences to report. The authors collected these experiences so that they could be shared …

Recipe For Disaster Or Formula For Success? Creating And Assessing A Large Scale Collaborative Library Introduction Exercise For Honors Students, Anna Marie Johnson, Melissa Laning
Faculty Scholarship
Working with any large group of students in the library is always a challenge. It becomes even more so when the students number 160 plus and the exercise is supposed to introduce them to all parts of the university library in less than two hours! The logistics alone can cause huge headaches. At the University of Louisville (UL), we have attempted this three years in a row and have learned much about what works and what does not. This article describes the history of the project, our goals, how we have assessed the project’s effectiveness, what we have learned, and …

Helping Librarians To Encourage Critical Thinking Through Active Learning Techniques In Library Instruction, Cynthia Wright Swaine
Helping Librarians To Encourage Critical Thinking Through Active Learning Techniques In Library Instruction, Cynthia Wright Swaine
Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
Encouraging librarians to incorporate critical thinking skills and active learning techniques in their course instruction requires more than talking about it in a department meeting or distributing articles on the topic. At Old Dominion University (Virginia), librarians have tried conducting workshops, had readily-accessible binders of articles and suggestions for librarians to consult, and held idea-sharing sessions. They have also tried including a related library instruction annual performance objective for each reference librarian involved in instruction. This paper describes this latest attempt to incorporate active learning in library instruction and includes an active learning planning sheet which serves as an outline …

Internet Use And Training In University Libraries, Carol Tenopir, Ralf Neufang
Internet Use And Training In University Libraries, Carol Tenopir, Ralf Neufang
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
University research libraries in the United States and Canada were surveyed to determine their use of a variety of electronic reference tools. An 85% response rate provided us with information about university library use of CD-ROM, remote online, locally loaded databases, and Internet access. The biggest change since our 1991 survey of the same libraries was in their provision of Internet access to users through the library. Follow-up interviews provided more in-depth information on how university libraries are managing Internet access, staff and user training programs, and changes in library staff attitudes or user attitudes since Internet access was introduced. …

Linking Secondary School Students With College-Level Resources: Guidelines For Borrowing Privileges And Library Instruction, Lucretia Mcculley
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
Boatwright Library at the University of Richmond has developed a cooperative program with high school librarians to provide service to local high school students. The Library grants limited circulation privileges and offers library instruction for assignments that require university-level library resources. The program has reduced inappropriate library behavior by high school students and may help the University attract additional students. Future plans include closer cooperation with high school librarians.

The 1988 LOEX (Library Orientation and Exchange) Conference challenged our instructional staff to think beyond our traditional instruction program for our university students. With a well established freshman and upperclass student program, what other groups did we need to focus on? Four librarians from the University of Richmond (UR), including three reference librarians and the Director of Public Services, attended the LOEX Conference in Bowling Green, Ohio in May of 1988. The conference theme was "Reaching and Teaching Diverse Library User Groups" and it concentrated on atypical groups within a college or university community such as international students, high school …

The need for teaching locational skills to junior high students was examined. A syllabus was developed to aid content area teachers in presenting locational skills to their students. The specific areas covered were use of the text as a tool, efficient use of common reference materials, efficient use of locational indexes, and an awareness of library arrangement and the Dewey Decimal System. The syllabus includes thirty-three teaching activities, an answer key, and notes to the teacher.

Curriculum For High School Students Who Are Responsible For Elementary Library Services, Delitha Carpenter

In order to alleviate some of the workload from the sole librarian of the Hartline School District in Eastern Washington, high school students were utilized as library aides. However, that created another problem which was how to efficiently train the student librarians. From this need, a curriculum was designed for teaching library aides for regular, clerical duties, to tell stories to the elementary students, and to aid in the typing and filing of catalog cards.
