Academic Librarian Competency: A Description Of Trends In The Peer-Reviewed Journal Literature Of 2001-2005, Jennifer Soutter
Leddy Library Publications
Describes publishing trends in academic librarian competency articles to provide context for a later investigation of definitions found in this library and information science (LIS) literature. Explores peer-reviewed articles from 2001 – 2005 to determine: who is writing on academic librarian competency, including any collaboration; whether there are areas of focus in the literature; if these articles are published in academic journals and to what degree; whether we incorporate other literatures, especially those relevant to competency; and what other trends may be important to an understanding of this topic.
Discovers three major areas of focus: management-related with 35 articles, 19 …

The Role Of Libraries, Librarians, And Information In Society, Michele Gibney
Michele Gibney
In the text Foundations of Library and Information Science by Richard E. Rubin and the online lectures for LIBR 200 at SJSU taught by Deborah Hansen, the history of information and librarianship is detailed and given scope. Some of the major points that the materials cover are: the missions and values of libraries, the beginning of libraries as institutions, librarianship as a profession, and the advent of technology, specifically, the World Wide Web. This paper will summarize these points as they have been detailed in the readings and then examine them from a personal perspective, one by one. Many interesting …
On Speaking Terms: How To Get Through Talking In Front Of A Crowd, Samantha Hines
On Speaking Terms: How To Get Through Talking In Front Of A Crowd, Samantha Hines
Mansfield Library Faculty Publications
We’ve all heard the axiom that the thing people fear most in life is speaking in public. Perhaps that is even true for some librarians. Even if public speaking isn’t on your personal top ten list of fears, it can still be difficult to muster up the courage to address a crowd. Yet, librarians’ job descriptions increasingly involve speaking to groups of people, through teaching, addressing a meeting, interviewing for a job, or presenting at conferences.

Hearing why the librarians of tomorrow chose the library profession is vital, because understanding their motivations provides librarians with a glimpse of the future as well as ways to improve that future for the profession. This article therefore seeks to communicate the career motivations of MLIS students by reporting the results of a survey conducted at the University of Alabama’s School of Library and Information Studies. Library administrators and others responsible for hiring information professionals will want to hear the library students’ reasons for entering the field, their salary expectations, geographic preferences, perceptions of the job market, and interest in …
Committee Service And The Fledgling Librarian: Creating Community, Confidence, And Employability, Sarah Steiner
Committee Service And The Fledgling Librarian: Creating Community, Confidence, And Employability, Sarah Steiner
University Library Faculty Publications
As a librarian-in-training, you face many demands on your time - classes, homework, a job, a marriage, a family - the list can go on and on. In the midst of all these school- and life-related responsibilities, committee service is something people often defer until after graduation. This is unfortunate, because the benefits of participation in committees, round tables, and other groups early in your career cannot be overstated. With only a small time commitment, local professional service can provide you with an invaluable - and underrated - way to meet people, gain experience in the profession, and land yourself …
Supercharging Online Instruction: Amplifying Interactivity Using Interactive Simulation Software, Maryellen Allen, Steven Osler, Matthew Torrence
Supercharging Online Instruction: Amplifying Interactivity Using Interactive Simulation Software, Maryellen Allen, Steven Osler, Matthew Torrence
Matt Torrence
As the trend toward online and distance learning courses in higher education continues, educators and instructional designers continually struggle with efforts to engage and motivate learners located in electronically distributed, asynchronous environments. Studies in the professional literature point to active and problem based learning strategies as possible ways to successfully involve students while raising achievement levels, yet importing such methodologies to the online environment is challenging. Emerging technologies offer hope for the integration of active/problem-based learning with the online instructional environment. One of the most promising of these technologies includes interactive simulation software applications.

Toward A Code Of Ethics For Cataloging, Sheila A. Bair
Toward A Code Of Ethics For Cataloging, Sheila A. Bair
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
Cataloging is the foundation of librarianship, and catalogers are professionals with special skills that set them apart from the profession in general and give them unique ethical responsibilities. They have power to help or harm on an increasingly global scale, yet very little has been written about the ethical issues faced by catalogers. This paper explores the ethics of cataloging, including encoding, subject analysis, authority control, and copy-cataloging, and examines descriptive and normative aspects in view of James Moor’s just-consequentialist theory and J.J. Britz’s ideas on ethical issues relating to intellectual freedom. A code of ethics for cataloging is offered.

Being A New Librarian In A New Library: What To Expect When You Take The Plunge, Sarah Steiner
Being A New Librarian In A New Library: What To Expect When You Take The Plunge, Sarah Steiner
University Library Faculty Publications
Just prior to my graduation I was offered a position at a new branch campus of Johnson and Wales University, a small private school esteemed for its culinary program. Largely due to the advice of my professors I decided to make the leap from graduate school into the unknown territory of this new university and its new library. My library science professors had often extolled the virtues of being involved in the birth of a new library; their wondrous depictions of their experiences inspired me to get involved as well. Of course, my professors had not so often mentioned that …

Much discussion has taken place in the literature over the difficulty finding qualified candidates to fill vacancies within libraries. Emphasis has been placed on recruitment, internships, scholarships, and other partnerships by library science schools and libraries to attract new people to the profession. Even so, applicant pools are dwindling [Simmons-Welburn and McNeil, 2004] and many institutions have been forced to rewrite job ads after initial postings to locate a qualified candidate. Factors hindering vacancy searches include:
- Graying of the profession, “Thousands of librarians will be retiring in the next ten years” [Simmons-Welburn and McNeil, 2004]
- Budget constraints/less positions [Bureau of …

Report Of The Metadata Access To Digital Collections Task Force, Ardis Hanson, Ilene Frank, Charles Gordon, Susan Heron, Linda Mcrae, Jim Michael, Tom Miller, Pete Reehling, Sue Vastine, Walter Rowe
Ardis Hanson
The charge of this Task Force evolved from an assignment to “work with the Head of Cataloging to develop a plan to strengthen the output of metadata needed for digital and electronic collections." This assignment grew out of a concern by Derrie Perez, Interim Dean of the USF Library System, that there was increased fragmentation of the USF Libraries collections, with electronic and digital collections accessed by means other than the online catalog. This report examines the USF Libraries Digital Collections from its foundation, its overall strategy, and structure of the current system. This model will allow a fuller picture …

Third Time's The Charm: Choosing A Career In Librarianship, P. S. Mcmillen

While many come to librarianship from other careers, I made my third major career change to the profession after a somewhat atypical process. I made myself the subject of a formal assessment process while completing a certificate program in career counseling. One of the first things we learned in the career counseling program is that most people take essentially an opportunistic path to their various jobs and careers, e.g., you know someone who does something that sounds sort of interesting, or someone knows someone else who needs someone… It’s often a very generic process and is, in fact, why so …

"The recent purchase of the great historical library of Dr. Leopold von Ranke by an American suggests some reflections. There is no doubt that this library, which numbers many thousands of books, pamphlets, manuscripts and documents of all times and all languages, is the finest historical collection in the world.... But this great and invaluable collection, which should have gone to one of the large cities like New York, Boston, Philadelphia or Chicago, or to one of the university towns like Cambridge, New Haven, Ithaca or Ann Arbor, is going to Syracuse, which is neither a large city nor a …

Mexican And U.S. Library Relations, Robert A. Seal
University Libraries: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This paper examines recent library interactions involving the United States and Mexico, providing a review of the literature and commentary on current and potential future cooperative endeavors. However, due to space considerations and a dearth of literature describing early work, the focus is limited to the past 30 years, with only selected references to earlier activity. The potential impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), recent developments in telecommunications and computer technology, and a rising number of "grass roots" binational conferences and projects all make this a good time to review our relationship, librarywise, with our neighbors to …
