In 2014, SAA and RBMS appointed joint task forces to address the challenges that archival repositories face related to metrics and assessment. The task forces are drafting proposed metrics and standards, but calls for how to implement data gathering continue. This session will share case studies on the implementation of data gathering from the ground up, metrics and assessment in instruction and reference, and identifying the best and most efficient ways to quantify resources for assessment and decision making. Sample transcripts from fall 2014 were evaluated, and a fall 2015 follow-up analysis reviewed service improvement efforts. INTRODUCTION Traditional assessment of ways in which open access initiatives and institutional repositories have provided a return on investment normally use pragmatic measures such as download counts and citation benefits. This pragmatic approach misses out on the powerful altruistic impact of improving access to international and/or marginalized communities. Using a frame of social justice, this article considers the importance of developing altruistic measures of repositories, particularly for institutions with missions specifically related to social justice and related themes. Today’s libraries are more than the number of circulated items or number of patrons who step in to the library. Integrated Library Systems nowadays are partnered with libraries to better facilitate data delivery which are always valuable not only for content delivery to patrons but also for large scale assessments and administrative decision making. In 2013 DIT developed a set of graduate attributes known as the “Five E’s”: Engaged, Enterprising, Enquiry based, Effective and Expert in chosen subject discipline. Each of these five attributes is comprised of several additional attributes, one of which is digital literacy.

This presentation explains what digital literacy is, why it is an important attribute for our students and graduates to develop, and discusses practical ways of creating a mapping between a programme’s assessment methods and the digital literacy graduate attribute.

This poster describes a yearlong project to assess student learning and engagement in archival instruction sessions using primary source materials held in Augustana College Special Collections. Special Collections staff has taken a four-pronged approach to assessing these sessions: a special test-based assessment project targeting first year students in introductory rhetoric classes (LSFY101), one-minute surveys asking participating students about their experience, comprehensive surveys targeting students and faculty, and in-class worksheets graded against a rubric to determine students’ ability to apply skills learned during the sessions. All data has been quantified and will be used to improve future class sessions.

Adapting The Amazing Library Race: Using Problem-Based Learning In Library Orientations, Katelyn Angell, Katherine Boss

This paper describes a pilot adaptation of the Amazing Library Race (ALR), an academic library orientation designed to introduce new users to library resources and services. A total of 185 students in twelve classes participated in the pilot project, which the authors co-taught. Pedagogically, the ALR combines guided, problem-based learning concepts with key elements of gamification, including competition and reward motivation. It also addresses the learning outcomes of reducing library anxiety and providing general information about collections and services. Collaboration with other entities and individuals has long been a standard practice of libraries. Typically, these collaborations seek to reduce redundancies, save money, and support educational and research efforts. However, a new model of collaboration exists that both assists discipline-specific research practices and informs library procedures. This article reviews two collaborations between an assessment librarian and a sociology class. The collaborations are unique because the library is the focus of the collaboration, with sociology students being able to apply classroom learning in a real-world setting. Purpose: Librarians engage in assessment for several purposes, such as to improve teaching and learning, or to report institutional value. In turn, these assessments shape our perspectives and priorities. How can we participate critically in the assessment of information literacy instruction and library programming while broadening our view and making room for questions about what we do? The primary goal of interdepartmental collaboration is to enhance student success, a common institutional priority in the twenty-first century.

This article describes practical steps taken in the planning of an integrated information literacy instruction linked to a course assignment for community health majors at Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York. The library sessions integrated the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and were based on faculty-librarian collaboration. 2015 marks the first year of Carleton's participation in the Research Practices Survey sponsored by the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS). The HEDS Consortium is comprised of a nationwide group of private colleges and universities, who collaboratively collect and share data institutional data.

The HEDS Research Practices Survey is uses the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) competency standards in information literacy to assess student information literacy as well as student research experience. The five-section survey takes roughly fifteen minutes to complete.

Purpose Academic centers utilize web-based surveillance systems to administer their evaluations, but little is known about their impact on the evaluation responsibilities delegated to medical residents. Method Using a mixed-methods approach, a retrospective content analysis was conducted of the evaluation activities experienced by a cohort of 29 residents as they completed their training in general internal medicine from 2009-2012. These data were triangulated with group interviews conducted with current internal medicine residents in 2012-2013. Results The internal medicine program electronically requested that its residents complete 8,614 evaluation reports on clinical faculty, curriculum, and junior trainees (345 requests annually per resident). …

Collaborative Assessment Of Student Learning: A Tale Of Two Departments, Iris Jahng

In Spring 2016, Healey Library and the English department at UMass Boston assessed the impact of library research instruction (LRI) on student learning in ENGL 102. 320 students in 24 sections received LRI. To measure this, booklets the students completed in class were evaluated with a rubric and a post-test was administered at the end of the semester. LRI has a measurable impact on student learning, and students retained and transferred what they learned.

Sailing Through Law School: Assessing Legal Research Skills Within The Information Literacy Framework, David H. Michels

In this study I ask the question: Can standardized information literacy tests help assess and benchmark the learning of information skills by Canadian law students? This study replicates an earlier study that found that a standardized test of information literacy competencies, SAILS, was not an effective measure of law student information literacy levels. By applying the same test under similar conditions to another group of law students, I found that while the test did not measure legal research competencies, it was effective in measuring basic information literacy skills in law students with often surprising results.
