Culturally Responsive One-Shots Flowing From Institutional Data, Hope Y. Kelly Phd Jan 2023

Culturally Responsive One-Shots Flowing From Institutional Data, Hope Y. Kelly Phd

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Explore how aggregated institutional data can inform culturally responsive instructional design and delivery through a case from a public, urban, minority-serving institution.

Virginia Commonwealth University’s Office of Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success annually shares a “Freshman Profile” that helps instructors gain insight into the student population we see in our library instruction sessions. This descriptive data paints a general picture of our first year students while maintaining individual privacy. This information is used to design and develop culturally responsive one-shot instruction that is in dialogue with race, gender, economics, family educational experience, academic preparedness and motivation, and social factors. …

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

The poster highlights unique file formats for sharing across learning management systems. A case is presented of an online module for an undergraduate research course that was first developed in 2019. Over the following two years, the module gained traction but required adjustments to be adopted more broadly. Barriers to adoption and mechanisms that have contributed to improved uptake are highlighted with an emphasis on flexibility for faculty in how they access the module and connect the instruction to their course outcomes.

Creating A Sustainable Graduate Student Workshop Series, Bettina Peacemaker, Martha Roseberry

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Purpose - This paper reports on librarians’ experience creating and sustaining a workshop and webinar series for graduate students over the course of four years.

Design/methodology/approach - Difficulties hosting and promoting stand-alone graduate workshops and a collaborative method for planning workshop days and webinars are described in this case study. Attendance data were collected and recorded for each event and additional quantitative data were collected via registration forms and post-event surveys.

Pedagogy For Librarians, Megan Hodge Jan 2015

Pedagogy For Librarians, Megan Hodge

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

Most librarians are required to take classes on reference, collection development, and information organization in library school; courses on pedagogy, on the other hand, are usually optional, if they’re offered at all. This leads most librarians who end up with instruction duties to learn on the job. Activities and assessments can be learned on the fly fairly easily, but these often have little to no bearing on how much students actually absorb and recall weeks later because alone, they are usually insufficient to ensure deep learning. This chapter seeks to add the basics of pedagogy, a subject comprehensively covered in …

Advance Graduate Research: Re-Examining Outreach With Workshops, Bettina Peacemaker, Martha Roseberry Jan 2014

Advance Graduate Research: Re-Examining Outreach With Workshops, Bettina Peacemaker, Martha Roseberry

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Academic Outreach librarians at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) offer a full range of instructional services to support upper-level and graduate students. Like most academic libraries, this includes workshops as well as course-integrated instruction and small group or individual consultations. While the latter have grown over the years, workshop attendance has dwindled. Offerings were cut until almost none were left, leaving a void but more importantly providing an opportunity to re-envision the role of workshops in outreach efforts.

The Advance Your Research workshop series was developed to go beyond traditional instruction to explore new and different themes and audiences, demonstrating the …

From Listening To Experiencing: Changing Evidence-Based Pharmacy Library Instruction, Barbara A. Wright, Jennifer A. Mcdaniel Jan 2014

From Listening To Experiencing: Changing Evidence-Based Pharmacy Library Instruction, Barbara A. Wright, Jennifer A. Mcdaniel

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

OBJECTIVE: Adapt bibliographic instruction from a traditional 50-minute lecture format to a hands-on, small group approach to more closely align with a team-based assignment.

METHODS: First year students in the School of Pharmacy's PharmD program are assigned to teams and work together on projects for lecture-based courses. In the second year, they are introduced to Team-Based Learning (TBL). To improve library instruction for first year students, two librarians used a team-based approach with hands-on examination of pharmacy resources to provide a better student learning experience than the traditional 50-minute lecture. Librarians led 90 minute interactive sessions for two teams for …

Collaborating With Colleagues: Promoting Visual Literacy Across The Curriculum, Kristina Keogh, John Glover Jan 2007

Collaborating With Colleagues: Promoting Visual Literacy Across The Curriculum, Kristina Keogh, John Glover

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

As new subject area librarians (for the Arts and Humanities respectively) at Virginia Commonwealth University interested in collaborative possibilities, we intend to demonstrate a plan for integrating visual literacy into traditional information literacy programs, including introductory library orientation sessions. This virtual poster will report on efforts at ARL libraries to coordinate these activities and hopefully emphasize to instruction librarians the increasingly important role of visual resources and of the need to have enough experience with them to help patrons using library and other resources to locate images. Visual image databases, Internet resources, and local digital collections will be highlighted for …
