AALL/LexisNexis Call for Papers
Nearly all law library staff have encountered, and likely will encounter, some measure of challenging patron behavior. In this article, the authors develop best practices based on their 2014 online survey of law library staff, follow-up correspondence with several survey respondents, and a review of case law and relevant literature within law librarianship and other fields.

BAFFOUR OHENE AGYEKUM MR
This study presents the results of a survey on the use of electronic journals (e-journals) subscribed through the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries In Ghana (CARLGH) among lecturers and faculty members in Kumasi Polytechnic in Ghana. A questionnaire was designed to gather information on the level of awareness, usage, impact and challenges encountered by users of e-journals and the way forward. Questionnaires were distributed to lecturers and faculty members at a training workshop. Data gathered were analyzed and presented in statistical data in the form of tables, graphs and charts.

The iSquare Research Program is an arts-informed, visual study of the concept of information, utilizing the draw-and-write technique (Pridmore & Bendelow, 1995). Participants are asked to respond to the question, “What is information?” by drawing upon a 4” by 4” piece of paper, coined an “iSquare.” The ongoing research program explores three questions: 1.) How do people visualize the concept of information?; 2.) How do visual conceptions of information differ among populations?; and 3.) How do these images relate to the traditional conceptions of information made of words? Since 2011, more than 1,000 iSquares have been collected from around the …
The Symbiotic Relationship Between Information Retrieval And Informetrics, Dietmar Wolfram
The Symbiotic Relationship Between Information Retrieval And Informetrics, Dietmar Wolfram
Dietmar Wolfram
Informetrics and information retrieval (IR) represent fundamental areas of study within information science. Historically, researchers have not fully capitalized on the potential research synergies that exist between these two areas. Data sources used in traditional informetrics studies have their analogues in IR, with similar types of empirical regularities found in IR system content and use. Methods for data collection and analysis used in informetrics can help to inform IR system development and evaluation. Areas of application have included automatic indexing, index term weighting and understanding user query and session patterns through the quantitative analysis of user transaction logs. Similarly, developments …
Health Disclaimers And Website Credibility Markers: Guidance For Consumer Health Reference In The Affordable Care Act Era, Deborah H. Charbonneau
Health Disclaimers And Website Credibility Markers: Guidance For Consumer Health Reference In The Affordable Care Act Era, Deborah H. Charbonneau
Deborah H. Charbonneau
This article reports on the current state of health disclaimers, online health resources, and credibility markers provided on public library websites (N = 105) for those seeking health information. In light of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), these findings have implications for consumer health reference services in public libraries. Approximately half of the public library websites in the study sample (n = 52, 49.5%) referred users to the ACA Health Insurance Marketplace website (HealthCare.gov). When referring to online consumer health resources, a small number of public library websites identified the authors of online health content (n = 16, 15.2%) or …

Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Nigeria was established as a federal government financed university on August 1992. Because the university was unprepared to start any agriculture program at that time, there were limited provisions for agricultural information services. However, in 2010 the University established a Faculty of Agriculture; to prepare the university library to serve this group, a survey was carried out to ascertain the faculty’s library literacy status as well as their information needs. e result showed that, among other things, members of the new Faculty preferred hybrid (electronic and print) library services and were open to innovative social …

Data was collected using Achievement Test and Questionnaire. Percentages, frequencies and mean rating were used to answer research questions. T-test was used to test hypotheses. The major findings of the study include: …

In higher education’s environment of accountability, the development and assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs) are driven by both external stakeholder requirements for accreditation and internal institutional pressures to demonstrate student learning as the core function of universities and colleges. This paper presents a framework to reduce faculty workload and increase standardization of SLOs for LIS electives across multiple schools. The framework includes a value-added assessment with results that show a significant increase in the overall scores and specifically in areas of focus for the elective. This approach provides a framework for other popular LIS electives to collaborate across schools …

Faculty Perceptions Of Open Access Author Fees, Anne E. Rauh
Faculty Perceptions Of Open Access Author Fees, Anne E. Rauh
Anne Rauh
In fall 2013, librarians at Syracuse University and Cornell University surveyed STEM faculty to learn about their experiences with, and perceptions of, open access publishing and the author fees that may accompany that model. The results showed little experience with open access author fees but strong opinions about the open access model. This poster will highlight the cautious optimism found in the results along with suggestions for librarians to further faculty understanding of and participation in open access publishing.
Supporting The Expatriate Social Scientist: Faculty Research And Information Access In Post-Soviet Kazakhstan, Celia Emmelhainz
Supporting The Expatriate Social Scientist: Faculty Research And Information Access In Post-Soviet Kazakhstan, Celia Emmelhainz
Celia Emmelhainz
Librarians in America and Europe find that social scientists rely heavily on journal articles, specialized data, and feedback from colleagues in directing their research. This project uses 21 ethnographic interviews with librarians, students, and faculty at “Atameken University” in post-Soviet Kazakhstan to explore how social scientists adjust such research habits to a context of distant information sources and limited access. By developing technological adaptations to the local context, expatriate scholars can surmount most barriers to access—and yet librarians are then less able to effectively support research. Increased access to information and skilled librarians remains essential for Eurasian universities seeking to …
