Academic Libraries, Facebook And Myspace, And Student Outreach: A Survey Of Student Opinion, Ruth S. Connell
Academic Libraries, Facebook And Myspace, And Student Outreach: A Survey Of Student Opinion, Ruth S. Connell
Ruth S. Connell
This study surveyed 366 Valparaiso University freshmen to discover their feelings about librarians using Facebook and MySpace as outreach tools. The vast majority of respondents had online social network profiles. Most indicated that they would be accepting of library contact through those Web sites, but a sizable minority reacted negatively to the concept. Because of the potential to infringe on students’ sense of personal privacy, it is recommended that librarians proceed with caution when implementing online social network profiles.

Yes, We're Open: Library Hours And What Patrons Really Want, Jennifer Link Jones
Jennifer L. Jones
The Georgia State University Student Government Association (SGA) announced a plan to petition the University Library to extend its hours. Specifically, SGA wanted the library to remain open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The library kicked into assessment mode and gathered data to determine whether longer library hours were appropriate, especially during a time of budget cuts. The library used the data to advise SGA, as well as to inform staffing and hours of operation decisions. Do patrons really want libraries to be open 24x7? Georgia State’s Training & Assessment Librarian will present her findings during this …

This paper was inspired by the authors’ personal experience of using social media systems over the last two years. During that time both authors have used a range of public, private and hosted social media systems for their professional activities and well as for personal use. They and other colleagues are convinced that a unified approach to social media systems can benefit the communications processes within our institution and our interaction with our important existing and potential clients, the students and alumni.

Online Catalogs : What Users And Librarians Want, Karen S. Calhoun, Joanne Cantrell, Peggy Gallagher, Diane Cellantani
Karen S Calhoun
Although library catalogs are often thought of as discovery tools, the catalog’s delivery-related information is just as important to end users. This report presents findings from focus groups and online surveys of end users and library professionals that indicate what catalog data elements and services are rated as important to end users, and contrasts these requirements to what library professionals report they need from catalog data and services.

Presidential Control Over The Regulatory Affairs Of Federal Administrative Agencies, Jennifer Allison
Jennifer Allison
This paper outlines the historical exertion of presidential control over the regulatory affairs of federal agencies. It first examines the historical understanding of the constitutionality of examining such control. Then, it describes the two main methods that modern Presidents use to exercise such control: presidential directives and presidential regulatory approval regimes. Finally, it discusses how this has manifested itself during the early days of the Obama administration, exploring the regulatory effects of President Obama's executive order that directed agencies to expand funding programs for research using embryonic stem cells.

Developing A Multifaceted Approach To Identify A Core Undergraduate Browsing Collection, Doug Way, Sarah Beaubien, Julie Garrison

In planning for a new library that will include a limited number of open stacks, Grand Valley State University librarians were asked to identify what materials should be reserved for the browsable shelves. To accomplish this, librarians considered user behavior by discipline, material types, shelving options and the role of core collections. This paper will discuss these issues as well as differences in how library resources are located and the impact of new discovery tools, such as Innovative Interface's Encore, Bowker’s Syndetics, and Google’s Book Search on redefining browsability. The paper will also include a discussion of resources used in …
