Budgeting In Crisis: Responsive Decision-Making In Academic Library Collections, Braegan Abernethy
University Library Faculty Publications
A key takeaway for library managers encountering similar fiscal realities is the intrinsic value of flexibility and creative-problem solving when faced with seemingly devastating budget reductions. This spirit of ingenuity will be needed as the ongoing economic impact to libraries from the COVID-19 pandemic is realized in the coming years.
The 1-2-3 Of Market Research For Business Startups: A Case Study In Library Instruction, Daniel S. Lê, Marie-Louise Watson
The 1-2-3 Of Market Research For Business Startups: A Case Study In Library Instruction, Daniel S. Lê, Marie-Louise Watson
University Library Faculty Publications
This article describes a practical way to teach student entrepreneurs to search and use market data for business startup plans. The conventional way of teaching students to find articles and business intelligence based on a class assignment can be challenging for many students without an academic business background. This library instruction approach sequentially uses three databases enriched with business data and infographics to support the development of critical thinking for student entrepreneurs. It teaches entrepreneurial personality support, analysis, visualization, and market mapping.

We present findings from an exploratory quantitative content analysis case study of 156 doctoral dissertations from Georgia State University that investigates doctoral student researchers’ methodology practices (used quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods) and data practices (used primary data, secondary data, or both). We discuss the implications of our findings for provision of data support services provided by the Georgia State University Library’s Research Data Services (RDS) Team and subject liaison librarians in the areas of instructional services, data software support and licensing advocacy, collection development, marketing/outreach, and professional development/expansion.

From Summer 2020 to Summer 2021, a team of Georgia State University (GSU) University Library faculty took part in a multi-institutional research study coordinated by the Ithaka S+R research and consulting organization to examine the research support needs of faculty doing “big data” research. Drawing from semi-structured interviews with eight GSU researchers representing a diverse cross-section of academic fields, this report offers the following insights from participation in the study: (1) identifies the key research support needs and associated challenges faced by GSU faculty who engage in “big data” research, and (2) offers possible paths toward improved support of GSU …
Library Support In Times Of Crisis: An Analysis Of Chat Transcripts During Covid, Sheeji Kathuria
Library Support In Times Of Crisis: An Analysis Of Chat Transcripts During Covid, Sheeji Kathuria
University Library Faculty Publications
This paper presents the analysis of over 4,000 chat questions from 2019-2020. Each chat question was individually categorized into broad level topics, and analyzed using sentiment analysis. During the COVID pandemic, there was an increase in the number of questions about accessing the physical collection, and a large decrease in questions about using the library space. The overall sentiments of the chat questions were much more negative during COVID. Tagging and analyzing chat questions in this way can offer unique insights for all types of libraries to appropriately staff the service and best support patron needs in times of crisis.
Quantifying Interdisciplinarity: Subject Librarians As Research Collaborators, David S. Nolen, Sheeji Kathuria, Evan Peacock
Quantifying Interdisciplinarity: Subject Librarians As Research Collaborators, David S. Nolen, Sheeji Kathuria, Evan Peacock
University Library Faculty Publications
Interdisciplinary research presents unique challenges and unique opportunities for collaboration, but measuring the impact of interdisciplinary research creates particular opportunities for subject librarians. Researchers working in the field of applied zooarchaeology collect data about ancient animal populations by examining animal remains found at archaeological sites. These data provide historic insights that would be of use to scholars working in a variety of disciplines, but the question has lingered among applied zooarchaeologists as to whether their colleagues in other disciplines have been discovering and citing the published data. The authors of the current study designed a citation analysis to measure the …
Using Machine Learning To Predict Chat Difficulty, Jeremy Walker, Jason Coleman
Using Machine Learning To Predict Chat Difficulty, Jeremy Walker, Jason Coleman
University Library Faculty Publications
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and potential utility of using machine learning and natural language processing techniques to develop models that can reliably predict the relative difficulty of incoming chat reference questions. Using a relatively large sample size of chat transcripts (N = 15,690), an empirical experimental design was used to test and evaluate 640 unique models. Results showed the predictive power of observed modeling processes to be highly statistically significant. These findings have implications for how library service managers may seek to develop and refine reference services using advanced analytical methods.

Meeting Them Where They Are: Designing Active-Learning Information Literacy Modules Within An Lms, Jill E. Anderson
University Library Faculty Presentations
The onslaught of the pandemic in 2020 has required us all to rework how we approach instruction. This presentation will focus on how a liaison librarian leveraged their growing knowledge of their university’s learning management system (LMS) to design active-learning information literacy modules for several humanities courses. Faculty at this large state university were expected to take a 4-week intensive course on “mastering online teaching,” offered monthly beginning in spring 2020 by the campus teaching and learning center. This course, taught via the LMS, was also designed to familiarize instructors with teaching with the LMS. As a result of taking …

Open To All: The Public Domain, Laura Burtle, Denise George
University Library Faculty Presentations
On January 1, 2019, works copyrighted in 1923 will enter the public domain. This is the first time works have entered the public domain in 20 years. In this presentation, we will define the public domain and explain how works enter the public domain. We’ll provide some key resources for locating public domain content, and we’ll engage the audience in a brief activity demonstrating the use of public domain works in research and teaching. Finally, we will discuss legislative developments that may impact some works entering the public domain going forward.

Academic Libraries As Unlikely Defendants: A Comparative Fair Use Analysis Of The Georgia State University E-Reserves And Hathitrust Cases, Laura Burtle, Mariann Burright
University Library Faculty Publications
Academic libraries rely on fair use for key functions in support of education. Among these functions are provision of electronic reserves, mass digitization, provision of access for print-disabled students, and preservation. These were the practices at issue in the 2008 Georgia State University e-reserves case and the 2012 HathiTrust case. This article explores the two lawsuits where libraries were sued for alleged copyright infringement. We explore how the courts in each case applied fair use to the facts of the case, compare and contrast the courts' analysis, and explain the role that transformative use plays in distinguishing the outcomes. Finally, …

How Can Researchers' Browsing Behaviors Inform Library Space-Planning?, Sarah Pickle
Southeastern Library Assessment Conference
This study is an in-depth, qualitative analysis of the ways academics at the Claremont Colleges browse library materials, both print and electronic, for their research. Many academic libraries today are struggling with the question of how best to accommodate the quantity of print materials they routinely acquire as those volumes increasingly strain the capacity of their physical spaces. It is hoped this project will help these institutions identify which subject-based collections and which format types researchers need to have immediately accessible for physical perusal and which they can browse productively online.
