Access To Humanities Scholarship Through Public Search Engines, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey

While research has shown search engine coverage of science and social science scholarship rivals traditional library databases, the coverage or utility of public search engines for the humanities needs further exploration. This presentation will report results from at least two empirical research studies that investigated access to humanities scholarship via public search engines (e.g. Google, Google Scholar, Google Books, Microsoft Academic). We will propose additional research ideas that we hope will inspire future studies.

Technology change is difficult for everyone, even under the best circumstances. A collaboratively-developed communication plan can ease stress and foster buy-in. Come participate in a workshop where we will show-and-tell best practices and examples of successful communication plans, then offer structured activities where you will develop your own plan, either for an actual project or a sample scenario we will offer. You’ll get immediate peer feedback on your ideas, and will have the opportunity to ask facilitators and other participants questions about specific challenges.

A case study is presented in order to prompt discussions of how to serve faculty who have fallen victim to predatory publishers. After learning of a field-specific predatory journal, a search of the publisher’s website revealed an institutional researcher had been included on the board of editors. After reaching out, the researcher confirmed that he was not legitimately associated with the journal, and asked for assistance in removing his name. I was unprepared to help him, and while an internet search provided information on how to approach removal, other questions surfaced. For example, how do we approach faculty with the …

Upstate’s Department of Nursing adopted the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence -Based Practice (JHNEBP) Model as part of their journey toward Magnet recognition. To receive Magnet certification hospitals must have the infrastructure and resources to support the advancement of evidence-based practice (EBP) in all clinical settings. Nurses are expected to be able to speak the concept of EBP and cite examples of how they use evidence in their practice to achieve optimal patient outcomes. For 2018, the Center for Student Research at St. John Fisher College intentionally sought to diversify the disciplines participating in the summer undergraduate research program. Previously, only the Biology and Chemistry departments and Wegmans School of Nursing had participated in the program. This cycle, 30% of the students were a humanities or social science major. The Science Librarian had offered a ten week online module on scholarly publishing as an option for the summer researchers in the past. The Upstate Health Sciences Library, located in Syracuse, New York and serves Upstate Medical University and its surrounding communities. The Library is open 361 days a year, closing only for New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The standard hours of operation are M-Th 7:30am to 12am; Fri 7:30am to 10pm; Sat 10am to 9pm; and Sun 10am to 12am with an average of 104 open hours per week. This study assessed the effectiveness of one-shot library instruction sessions on knowledge acquisition and retention in Biology undergraduate students. In early Spring 2018 semester, the students enrolled in six sessions of Bio 112 at Adelphi University attended library instruction classes to learn about scientific literature. One-shot library instruction sessions were conducted to teach students in each section how to identify research, review and popular science magazine articles. A post-instruction test was conducted in late April and early May, 2018, to determine whether the students retained information from library instruction classes. University libraries across the country are investing in Digital Humanities and digital scholarship initiatives, providing support for research and teaching using digital tools and methods. Because digital scholarship offers scholars new ways to visualize and analyze their research, which communicates such research in new ways, it has clear lines of connection with scholarly communications. Combining these two unique areas of library activity offers opportunities for new library research by leveraging methods from DH to tackle problems in scholarly communications. Content from the College of Fine Arts (Schools of Music, Art, and Theatre and Dance) had, to that point, been less present in the IR than content from other colleges. Last year, three MLIS students from the University of Washington partnered with Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada and helped to identify an information need for new refugees. Although local city information for refugees is freely available online, this delivery method is not beneficial to individuals with limited English language proficiency or low digital literacy. To bridge this gap, we created a resource guide for refugees located in Southern Nevada, which can be adapted by libraries and resettlement organizations across the country.

The Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) comprises 128 diverse member libraries, including 13 public universities, 39 community colleges, and 76 private, research, and special libraries. In 2016, member libraries began to ask CARLI staff about joining the Open Textbook Network (OTN), a membership organization anchored at the University of Minnesota that promotes access, affordability, and student success through the use of open textbooks. Part of the University of Illinois System, CARLI is funded by State of Illinois appropriations and at the time was unable to afford the OTN membership fee due to the historic 736-day “budget …
