2018 - Groundwater Management In California, Michael Hanemann
Related Research and Documents
In 2014, the California legislature for the first time took some steps to create a framework for regulating groundwater pumping in over-drafted basins by adopting the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), representing California's first statewide groundwater management planning program. SGMA called for local agencies to develop groundwater sustainability plans within the next five to seven years and then achieve sustainable levels of groundwater extraction by approximately 2040 to 2045. California's prior efforts to regulate groundwater extraction is discussed, as well as groundwater depletion.

Symposium on Advanced Sensors and Modeling Techniques for Nuclear Reactor Safety
The study of accident tolerant fuels is ongoing at the Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT) at Idaho National Laboratory. The TREAT Facility provides quick, high-energy neutron pulses that simulate various accident conditions. These neutron pulses are presently detected using an array of fast-neutron detectors called Hornyak buttons. Hornyak buttons suffer from poor detection efficiency and significant Ĉerenkov radiation contamination in the signal. A new enabling technology, the micro-layered fast-neutron detector (MLFD), is presented to monitor neutron flux changes during mild-to-severe reactor accidents. The MLFD was designed to overcome the shortcomings of the Hornyak buttons and to improve detection efficiency. The …

Barrier Tracker - Using Citizen Science To Build The Most Comprehensive Atlas Of Barriers In Europe, David J. Kilbey, Arjan Berkhuysen, Rosa Olivo Del Amo, Herman Wanningen
International Conference on Engineering and Ecohydrology for Fish Passage
There is already a substantial amount of data in existence on the barriers within European rivers. However, even for the most comprehensively audited countries, data is patchy and often of poor quality. Proper assessment and prioritisation of remedial action cannot be undertaken until the full picture is known. Barrier Tracker, part of the Adaptive Management of Barriers in European Rivers (AMBER) project, seeks to address this issue by using a smartphone app to crowd-source data from across Europe. Initially available in 9 languages the app allows anyone to record the barriers they encounter. The app has been designed to allow …

Warning, It's A Catfish! Novel Approaches Are Needed To Study The Effects Of Rapid Decompression On Benthonic Species, Luiz Silva, Bernardo Beirão, Ricardo Falcao, Audrey Castro, Edson Dias
International Conference on Engineering and Ecohydrology for Fish Passage
Barotrauma due to rapid decompression has been recorded as the most common injury among fish captured in the tailrace of hydropower dams in Brazil, with catfishes representing the majority of them. Nevertheless, studies investigating barotrauma on catfish are scarce, with the majority determining dose-response curves and thresholds of pressure changes for nektonic species as salmonids. Experiments conducted with Pimelodus pictus showed that the current hypo-hyperbaric chambers used to study barotrauma in nektonic species have limitations when applied to benthic groups. The negative buoyancy showed by the catfish prevent the definition of the acclimation pressure of the fish prior to exposure …

The Alaska Model Of Fish Passage Policy, William J. Rice
The Alaska Model Of Fish Passage Policy, William J. Rice
International Conference on Engineering and Ecohydrology for Fish Passage
Since Alaska was a territory, safeguarding fish migration has been recognized both in state statutes as early as 1959 and in development of policy at local and interdepartmental levels. Implementation of these statutes over the years has resulted in relatively few dams or diversions on Alaskan fish-bearing waters with most of the policy emphasis in refining fish passage across road crossings, particularly culvert installations. Policy was supported by pioneering work in fish passage research, assessment and culvert design, so much so that it formed the basis of modern approaches to fish passage at road crossings across the nation. Collaborative efforts …

Established in 1971, Seaborn Lee has long been known as a place parents can confidently send their children. However, as times changed, Seaborn Lee started to experience challenges in behavior, discipline, and how the staff responded to those challenges. Prior to implementing School Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (SWPBIS), students were missing more days of class than there were school days in the year. In 2012-2013, administrators reported nearly 300 behavior incidents that led to students missing instruction and 421 days in which students were suspended or in office time out. The types of behaviors which were leading to …

Computational Techniques For Scattering Amplitudes, Juliano A. Everett
Publications and Research
Scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory can be described as the probability of a scattering process to happen within a high energy particle interaction, as well as a bridge between experimental measurements and the prediction of the theory.
In this research project, we explore the Standard Model of Particle Theory, it’s representation in terms of Feynman diagrams and the algebraic formulas associated with each combination.
Using the FeynArts program as a tool for generating Feynman diagrams, we evaluate the expressions of a set of physical processes, and explain why these techniques become necessary to achieve this goal.

The average family spends more than $1000 in water costs per year. One-way water is commonly wasted in many households is via inefficient sprinkler systems for lawns. Current technology has enabled the development of automatic sprinkler systems, which can be preconfigured to operate at desired times of day and intervals. Although these systems may reduce the amount of water utilized overall, they are not weather forecast aware. In situations when rainfall is upcoming the systems still water the lawn. In this project, we plan to implement a smart sprinkler system that has full awareness of upcoming weather and take account …

The accumulation of water runoff during rain storms is a major problem in New York City’s combination water systems, forcing water treatment plants to release untreated excess water. To avoid overfilling of the sewer system by this grey water, pocket parks and gardens will be used to absorb the excess rainfall. We will be harnessing nature’s resources with current technologies such as: solar panels combined with rain catching canopies, to beautify the environment, educate the public about sustainability, stimulate growth to local businesses through increased foot traffic and bringing social awareness on environmental issues.
The canopies are designed to collect …
The Representation Of Asians In Hollywood, Michelle Li
The Representation Of Asians In Hollywood, Michelle Li
Publications and Research
Hollywood has a long history of failing to represent America's diversity. This is especially pronounced in its lack of representation of Asian Americans. According to The Hollywood Reporter, in 2017, only 4.8 percent of the 4454 speaking characters were Asian. The industry works in biased and prejudiced ways towards Asians, restricting them from truly revealing their true selves instead of how they are portrayed by stereotypes.

In order for a school's PBIS program to be effective, teachers and staff members must be equipped with the tools to engage positively with their students. Many PBIS programs fail because teacher buy-in and preparation have not occurred. At Winterville Elementary School, we feel that our PBIS program is successful because teachers receive regular training and updates on topics such as establishing effective classroom management procedures, building positive relationships with students, working with students with difficult behaviors, and knowing functions of behavior. We conduct PBIS walkthroughs, our UGA behavior analyst records positive vs. negative comments from teachers, administrators conduct classroom …

How Soil Salinity Affects The Stomatal Conductance Of Baccharis Salicifolia (Mulefat/Seepwillow), Andrew Kim, Caroline Wilkerson, Mahala Bayless, Peter Du
Featured Research
This is a poster presentation demonstrating the project our group has been working on. We hypothesize that the stomatal conductance of mulefat will decrease as soil salinity increases in both pre-rain and post-rain conditions because the plant tries to absorb salt water. However, the salt water cannot pass through plant tissue and draws water out of the plant. Since plant requires water for photosynthesis, water being drawn out means less water is available for the plant to do photosynthesis. We have tested our hypothesis by collecting soil samples in Legacy park, and recorded stomatal conductance by using a leaf porometer
