Missing Information Has Value: Climate Change The And The Epa Website, Elisa Slater Acosta Jul 2018

Missing Information Has Value: Climate Change The And The Epa Website, Elisa Slater Acosta

Elisa Slater Acosta

What happens when government web pages are hidden, moved, or deleted? In the age of “alternative facts” and the “politicization of science” one librarian was inspired by real world events to create an opportunity to dialogue about power dynamics and bias in a traditional one-shot instruction session. Environmental Science students critically analyzed the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website and its treatment of climate change during the Trump, Obama, and Bush presidencies. The library “warm-up” activity was designed to raise awareness of data fragility and the long-term accessibility of government websites. As future science professionals, it’s important to think about how …

Melcom 2018: Oriental Manuscripts At The University Of Michigan (Slides), Roberta L. Dougherty

Roberta L. Dougherty

This paper tells the story of the birth and growth of the collection of Islamic manuscripts at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, USA). While the story has interest in its own right, this paper will also attempt to situate it in the larger story of the collecting of antiquities by Orientalists that began in Europe, first by wealthy dilettantes and royalty, then by museums as they began to grow and be established in the nineteenth century, and continued along similar lines in the young United States by wealthy industrialists and the museums and universities they patronized. Also having a …

Archivists And Technological Competencies: A Conversation About Archival Education, Anne Daniel, Amanda Jamieson, Amanda Oliver

Anne Daniel

Archivists are working in a rapidly changing environment and it can be challenging to be aware of and proficient with current and emerging technologies. Donors, researchers, and other stakeholders have an expectation that archivists are able to manage and provide access to records in all formats. It is imperative that archivists develop technical competencies in order to engage with records, record systems, and stakeholders. An examination of the current Canadian landscape will allow us to have an effective discussion about technical competencies and identify any strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats to developing these skills. Building on previous research, this session …

The paper examines the implementation of a ready reference training program for public service staff. The program was envisioned to educated staff in anticipation of dwindling traditional reference desk service hours. The hope of this project was to increase foundational knowledge of public services staff, improve point of need response, and decrease utilization of on-call librarians for basic questions.

The Kornhauser Health Sciences Library at the University of Louisville developed a training program to equip 10 public access staff with ready reference, website, and electronic resource skills. The training was administered in two separate 90 minute sessions according to public access …

On Trac To Success: Creating A Multi-Institution, Statewide Fulfillment Network, R. Todd Vandenbark, Brian Thompson, Dawn Mick, Greg Davis, Andrew J. Welch

Dawn Mick

In 2015, ten Iowa and Nebraska academic library systems prepared to migrate to Alma and Primo. Simultaneous adoption of a common ILS was unprecedented in Iowa, and we knew this was an opportunity to forge stronger connections between our libraries, collections, and institutions. Representatives from each library began meeting to discuss shared goals and objectives, and they formed TRAC: the Two Rivers Alma Collaborative.
Four TRAC libraries already belonged to a small regional consortium, but the rest did not. Our parallel migration timelines provided a chance to leverage our common--if not shared--library platform. Discussions ranged from sharing a Primo environment …

Mentoring The Next Generation Of Librarians.Ppt, Tiffney Gipson Apr 2018

Mentoring The Next Generation Of Librarians.Ppt, Tiffney Gipson

Tiffney Gipson

Library mentoring programs can impact both experienced and new librarians.  While many librarians have benefited both personally and professionally from mentoring relationships, some argue that the next generation of librarians may not respond to typical traditional or classic mentoring techniques.  As a millennial who has had many in-depth discussions on this topic, the author believes that many of the mentoring tools that worked so well in the past do not seem to resonate with millennial librarians today.  For example, the baby-boom generation may have had one or two separate mentoring relationships throughout their career.  The millennial generation, however, may respond …

Aisha Conner-Gaten

Librarians and library staff have always tried to uphold the Library Bill of Rights, specifically the access and use of the library collections and space, but are we just a neutral bridge to information or something more? In an era increasingly defined by the socioeconomic and educational inequalities, the digital divide, the resurgence of white supremacy and Islamophobia, and "fake news", we as information workers must challenge how we have understood our roles in the library. In response to this charge, the William H. Hannon Library staff development committee created and facilitated a day-long examination of social justice …

The Challenges To Learning In A Digital Age: Exploring Issues Of Access And Equity, Sandy Avila, Sarah A. Norris

Sandy Avila

As teaching and learning evolves to meet the demands of an increasingly digital world, we find these experiences transformed by hard unsolved problems and burgeoning opportunities yet to be explored and identified. Of critical importance to learning in the digital age are the issues of access and equity. These issues, while long prevalent in academia and beyond, have become increasingly more significant as the shift towards online and digital technologies provides new pedagogical possibilities we could not have predicted. Like faculty and students, libraries and librarians have equally felt this digital shift. The challenges faced provide an interconnected struggle that …

Weaving Connections: Utilizing A Library – Social Work Partnership To Build Information Literacy Skills, David Vess, Laura Trull Mar 2018

Weaving Connections: Utilizing A Library – Social Work Partnership To Build Information Literacy Skills, David Vess, Laura Trull

David Vess

While evidence continues to build that information literacy (IL) is taught across university and college curricula at all student levels (Junsbai, Lowe & Tagge, 2016), challenges connecting IL to those curricula in meaningful ways persist (Julien, Gross, & Latham, 2018; Klomsri & Tedre, 2016; Bombaro 2013). Blending IL into social work education beyond traditional one-shot library sessions also remains a challenge as evidenced by the dearth of literature demonstrating sound instruction and assessment practices of IL in social work programs (Bausman & Ward, 2016; Kayser, Bowers, Jiang, & Bussey 2013; Johnson, Whitfield, & Grohe, 2011; Ismail, 2009; Brustman & Bernnard …
