Of Codes And Ideology: Some Notes On The Origins Of The Major Criminal Enactments Of Singapore, Andrew B.L. Phang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This article, as its title suggests, surveys the historical background to the major criminal enactments of Singapore. As a subsidiary function, it also attempts to illustrate the possible ideology underlying the enactment of one particular statute, viz., the Penal Code - a possibility that might point the way toward broader conclusions as well as studies encompassing the role and function of the law in colonial Singapore from a more general point of view.

Sugar Coated Bullets: Corruption And The New Economic Order In China, Mark Findlay, Thomas Chor-Wing Chiu Jun 1989

Sugar Coated Bullets: Corruption And The New Economic Order In China, Mark Findlay, Thomas Chor-Wing Chiu

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The recent political debate concerning the influence of corruption on the “new economic order” in the People's Republic of China is unique not only for its detailed and public manifestations, but also because it works around the acceptance of some degree of corporate private ownership of the means of production within China. The concern for corruption in Chinese government and commerce is not, of itself, novel. We prefer in this paper briefly to focus on the economic and political environment from within which this concern has been generated, to comment on the significance for the Government of the PRC in associating …

Mine Warfare In The Russian And Soviet Navies, Jeffrey K. Bray May 1989

Mine Warfare In The Russian And Soviet Navies, Jeffrey K. Bray

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the development of technology, tactics, strategy, and organization of mine warfare in the Russian and Soviet navies from 1807 to the present. The author reviews the trials and tribulations of the development of naval mines and their employment within these two navies. This development has been primarily driven by the needs of war and advances of technology. In spite of occasional setbacks, the Russian and Soviet mine warfare forces continued to provide support to the overall naval and central policies of their respective governments. This support has often been during times of high tension and limited resources. …

Containment, Cliency And The Revolution In Vietnam, Deborah Tompsett-Makin May 1989

Containment, Cliency And The Revolution In Vietnam, Deborah Tompsett-Makin

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This thesis addresses the question, why does U.S. foreign policy contribute to political instability in developing nations? To ascertain the answer, it analyzes the post-World War II administrations from Truman through Johnson. One mode of containment, cliency, a foreign policy relationship between a major power and a weaker state, is developed within the framework analyzing containment. The cliency model provides a theoretical basis for explaining how the domestic structure of the client state is systematically distorted by the patron's actions in pursuit of its global interests. The cliency model is also linked to the pattern of development and stability of …

Honduras Pawn And Policy Maker, Elizabeth P. Thornton May 1989

Honduras Pawn And Policy Maker, Elizabeth P. Thornton

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

A study of the weak state was conducted using the Honduras-U.S. relationship as a case study. Most existing literature, with the exception of Annette Baker Fox's The Power of Small States, does not analyze in detail a specific country's relationship with a powerful nation. This research examined the factors that helped a weak country maintain maneuverability in its domestic and foreign policies when under the influence of a strong power. Six conditions which facilitated maneuverability were: geographic proximity, rising nationalism, citizen participation in government, trade distribution and diversification, international pressure, and declining hegemony of the strong power. Events in Honduras …

Herders, Gatherers And Foragers: The Emerging Botanies Of Children In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

The range of children's knowledge of plants and their uses in an agricultural village in Sudan is presented in a context of ecological and economic change. Children participated in procurement of vegetation for food, fodder and fuel needs. In some areas, knowledge of plants was gender and task-specific. Participant-observation and ethnosemantic interview techniques were used to elicit knowledge and construct a children's taxonomy of plant material

Book Review: The Poor And The Powerless: Economic Policy And Change In The Caribbean, By Clive Y. Thomas, Winston Langley Mar 1989

Book Review: The Poor And The Powerless: Economic Policy And Change In The Caribbean, By Clive Y. Thomas, Winston Langley

Trotter Review

With only brief interludes, the Caribbean area has for the past five centuries been a center of global power struggles and internal sociopolitical upheavals of the first order. Those struggles and upheavals show no signs of abating as we move into the twenty-first century. Indeed, there appears to be a consensus among scholars and political leaders in the region that the area now faces problems of crisis proportions.

Street Children Programs In Latin America, Mark W. Lusk

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The growing problem of street children is among the most important child welfare problems today. Estimates are that there are as many as 25 million street children in Latin America alone. This paper, which is based on over five months of fieldwork in Latin America, is a study of the problem of street children. Life on the streets is described in relation to the developmental stages of street children. The paper emphasizes the types of programs that have emerged as the countries of the region seek to ameliorate and prevent this social problem. A program typology is developed and discussed.
