Multimedia Prereading Strategies, Mary J. Wise
Multimedia Prereading Strategies, Mary J. Wise
All Graduate Projects
Prereading activities are important in enabling students to comprehend and enjoy the books they read. Teachers are always in need of good prereading activities, and the increasing popularity of computers offers opportunities to fill this need, however, technology is not keeping up with educators' needs in this area. While there is an overwhelming quantity of commercially produced computer software programs, they are invariably generic in nature. No software relating to prereading strategies appears to be available. A CD containing multimedia prereading activities was produced to accompany a selected list of elementary level trade books. The CD is intended to be …

This case study describes some tips and lessons learned from a project at St. Cloud State University designed to teach information literacy over the World Wide Web. The information literacy project has two primary components:
- Under the auspices of LEO: Literacy Education Online (a project to disseminate resources to improve composition and writing skills), to develop content resources providing guidance in library and internet use and application in research;
- Under the Center for Information Media, to disseminate self-paced instructional modules on library and internet use and application in research that could be used in credit-generating courses.
As the two components …

Students With Autism: A Light/Sound Technology Intervention, Patricia Powell Woodbury
Students With Autism: A Light/Sound Technology Intervention, Patricia Powell Woodbury
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of light/sound technology to promote sensory integration which facilitates the learning capacity of children with autism by reducing their high state of arousal, increasing time on task and decreasing acting-out behaviors. This research extended the work of A. Jean Ayres and Lorna King who theorized that the autistic individual's brain does not register, modulate or integrate sensations that most people notice; auditory and visual inputs are ignored more than other types of sensory stimuli. This study utilized light/sound technology to stimulate and desensitize these sensory channels to facilitate processing of …

Managing Change For A Distance Learning Initiative: An Evaluation, Jeanie Pollard Kline
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this case study was to examine the degree to which those managing change for a distance learning initiative followed David Nadler's (1989) four action steps designed to reduce resistance in making the transition from the former operational state to a newly-created state.;The four action steps include providing opportunities for participation among employees, allowing employees to identify current operations that will not work in the new organizational state, rewarding behavior that assists in the transition, and allowing sufficient time for the change to take place. The findings in this study revealed that participation was the critical component that …

Editor's Message
Many of us come out of formal and advanced training in writing. We are at home with the humanities: philosophy, drama, the arts, aesthetics. We connect easily to both the teaching of literature and to literary exegesis. Ideas about literacy come easily to us.
We need to be aware of work being done in the field outside our focus in writing, literature, and language. Connections need to be made between us and other members of our cultural tapestry. Every once in a while someone tells me about the name of a book, an organization, or a journal that …

The Effect Of Adjunct Illustrations On Year 8 Students' Comprehension Of Scientific Text, Jackie Knapp
The Effect Of Adjunct Illustrations On Year 8 Students' Comprehension Of Scientific Text, Jackie Knapp
Theses : Honours
Illustrations are present in the majority of Secondary Science textbooks. The type of illustration used and its purpose varies from text to text. The four most common forms of illustration are the photograph, hand drawing, line drawing and scientific abstract diagram. Some illustrations such as glossy photographs serve no other purpose than to attract the student to the text and motivate them to read. Others such as the scientific diagram present a lot of information in a condensed form and their purpose is to clarify concepts. Some at these more complex illustrations are often difficult to interpret especially for younger …

Theses Digitization Project
In this thesis, a survey design was used following closely the objective of descriptive research. The idea was to take a sample of the population of teachers in the area, gather demographic data, and find out if the reasons they fail to fully integrate technology into their classrooms can be attributed to skill deficiency, motivation, lack of environmental support or a combination thereof.
