Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The Scholar Project was my term for a variety of projects and developmental efforts to incorporate the use of computers into the everyday work life of a graduate social work faculty member before the advent of desktop computing. It began in 1974 with a variety of experiments with SPSS files, McBee "KeySort" Cards, and a Computer Aided Instruction experiment with IBM's Coursewriter software. Library Faculty and Staff Publications
The implementation of a computer-assisted instruction package to supplement college-level bibliographic instruction is described. An outline of goals and objectives for an introductory package and a sample segment explain the technique for creating software locally, allowing for custom design. The use of sample materials permits student-tool interaction in a realistic exercise while also taking advantage of the computer's capabilities. Using locally available hardware with librarian-created text allows for subject-specific lecture presentations, elimination of repetition, and immediate instructional feedback. Results from use of materials by almost 2000 students are summarized.

The project was directed toward planning, developing, and implementing a subregional biomedical information network among the forty-three health care facilities (hospitals) of the four-county area served by Loma Linda University's health sciences library. The project coordinator contacted administrators and health care professionals in the forty-three institutions to present a plan for the network. The health care facilities were encouraged to support the continuation of the network through contract fees. The availability of specific information services was assured through contractual agreements. It was anticipated that the subregional network would be self-supporting after the twelve-month project period (December 1, 1976-November 30, 1977). …
