The African American Community In Ogden, Utah: Teaching Local History Within A National Framework, Michelle Braeden Dec 2016

The African American Community In Ogden, Utah: Teaching Local History Within A National Framework, Michelle Braeden

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Historical Background:

Beginning in 1869, the newly built Union Station in Ogden Utah became a major terminal for the transcontinental railroad. Around that same time George Pullman began recruiting emancipated slaves as employees on his luxury railroad cars. As a result a sizeable number of African Americans began working on the railroad. Many African Americans found residence in Ogden since it was a major railroad hub. As a result a small African American neighborhood that was six blocks long and two blocks wide formed in the city.[1] Businesses and organizations formed to support the emerging African American community within …

“Her Name Was Not Seher, It Was Heranuş…”: Reading Narratives Of Forced Turkification In Twenty-First Century Turkey, T. Elal Dec 2016

“Her Name Was Not Seher, It Was Heranuş…”: Reading Narratives Of Forced Turkification In Twenty-First Century Turkey, T. Elal

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The process of Turkish state formation coincides with systematic large-scale massacres, persecution and exclusion of certain groups - namely Armenians, Rums, Jews, Assyrians and Kurds. However, accounts of the process of Turkish nation-building which deal with its destructive side often overlook the “Turkification” of many non-Muslim women and children in the wake of the First World War. This study aims to fill this gap by drawing on personal narratives and testimonies of forceful assimilation published in the last decade in Turkey. As any discussion on the Armenian Genocide was one that was silenced until not so long ago in Turkey, …

Nixon's War On Terrorism: The Fbi, Leftist Guerrillas, And The Origins Of Watergate, Daniel S. Chard

Doctoral Dissertations

In 1969, militant factions within both Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the Black Panther Party (BPP) began to form the United States’ first clandestine revolutionary urban guerrilla organizations: the Weather Underground and the Black Liberation Army (BLA). These groups carried out bombings, police ambushes, and other attacks throughout the country, prompting responses from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the administration of President Richard M. Nixon. Several historians have analyzed U.S. leftist guerrillas’ motives, and much has been written on FBI operations against the Black Power movement and New Left, including the Bureau’s covert counterintelligence programs (COINTELPROs) …

Conflict And Cooperation: Western Economic Interests In Ottoman Iraq 1894-1914, Jameel N. Haque Sep 2016

Conflict And Cooperation: Western Economic Interests In Ottoman Iraq 1894-1914, Jameel N. Haque

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation investigates underutilized U.S. archival sources in order to discuss certain aspects of late Ottoman history in Baghdad and Basra, between 1894 and 1914. Since these sources have been underutilized, their inclusion will widen the scope of possible historical investigation in the study of Late Ottoman Baghdad and Basra. This research will suggest that, in this period, there was an expanding role/presence for America and Americans that is not currently reflected in the historiography. This should, of course, be qualified since Americans and American interests in the region, although on the increase, were still significantly less than those of …

Lone Voice In The Wilderness: Centering Sex Workers’ Rights In Prostitution Policy, Emily A. Parker Sep 2016

Lone Voice In The Wilderness: Centering Sex Workers’ Rights In Prostitution Policy, Emily A. Parker

Women's History Theses

Sex work and its legal status is a controversial and divisive subject amongst feminist scholars and lawmakers alike. While sex workers are often subject to violence and discrimination simply by virtue of their labor, legal institutions designed to protect individuals from such experiences tend to exacerbate their impacts on sex workers. Sympathetic lawmakers and scholars have attempted to implement laws to the benefit of sex workers but have struggled to successfully ameliorate the harms they experience both at work and during their everyday lives. This paper attempts to explicate the ways in which purportedly beneficial laws actually work to the …
