Book Review: Subordinate And Marginal Groups In Early India, Edited By Aloka Parasher-Sen, Ananya Vajpeyi

Marginality and subordination have been important themes in India's human and social sciences for almost a hundred years. Aloka Parasher-Sen's edited volume is a useful intervention in the literature on caste in the "intermediate and immediate past" (p. 3). This is the long stretch of South Asian premodernity frequently ignored by historians, thanks to presentist commitments that tend to overwhelm their scholarship ideologically or lop-sided archival and linguistic skills that tend to constrain it intellectually. The politics of the discipline of history being what it is today, the ancient, colonial, and contemporary periods all receive disproportionate amounts of scholarly attention, …

Elisheva Carlebach discusses the literary legacy of Bella bat Jacob Perlhefter (born c. 1650), accomplished writer, instructor of music and rhythm, and entrepreneurial seventeenth-century businesswoman. Her letters provide a rare glimpse into the life of a seventeenth-century Jewish woman (other than Glikl).

West African Food Traditions In Virginia Foodways: A Historical Analysis Of Origins And Survivals., Lisa R. Shiflett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The degree of African cultural survivals in African-American culture has been debated since the Civil War. Convincing research that West African cultural traits did survive in African-American culture, particularly in African-Amercian foodways, focuses on the lower south, neglecting the upper south. This thesis fills that gap by identifying West African traits in African-as well as Anglo-America foodways in Virginia, focusing on four broad research areas: Native American and Anglo-American foodways during the colonial and early Republic eras; West African foodways; African-American foodways during slavery; and current trends in Virginia foodways.
