A Global Journey Inward: Contemplative Education Abroad On A Short-Term Program In Finland, Tanya Kramer May 2024

A Global Journey Inward: Contemplative Education Abroad On A Short-Term Program In Finland, Tanya Kramer

Dissertation Collection

This study investigated the transformative potential of integrating subjective and intersubjective contemplative practices within a short-term, faculty-led education abroad program in Finland. Focused on addressing tensions arising from neoliberal and objective approaches to conventional Western higher education, the research explored how critical contemplative education abroad fostered deeper connections with Self, Others, and Place among students. Data collection involved analyzing course documents, facilitating two focus groups, conducting participant observations, and documenting researcher reflections. Employing the heuristic approach within a qualitative and spiritual research paradigm, the study identified three main findings: Experience of Place, Experiential Coherence, and Individual Perspectives within a Collective …

The Experiences Of Minoritized Students In A College Success Course: A Qualitative Case Study, Erin Hannah May 2024

The Experiences Of Minoritized Students In A College Success Course: A Qualitative Case Study, Erin Hannah

Theses and Dissertations

Enrollment in higher education has increased over recent years with more students entering college underprepared for the academic rigor. Through expanded access, more minoritized students who are Pell eligible are enrolling. To retain these and other students, higher education institutions are implementing high impact practices to provide additional support. One such strategy is through the implementation of college success courses. These courses are intended to provide an extra layer of support for students as they make the transition from high school to college. Using a qualitative, case study approach, I used semi-structured interviews which included a photo-elicitation component to explore …

Using Student Interests To Explore Inclusion In Undergraduate Chemistry, Sonja Hoversten May 2024

Using Student Interests To Explore Inclusion In Undergraduate Chemistry, Sonja Hoversten

CSB and SJU Distinguished Thesis

For students who are not chemistry majors, but who are on a career track requiring four chemistry courses, taking the final reactivity chemistry course (CHEM 251) for pre-health students can be daunting. For this reason, this research is focused on the CHEM 251 course at The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University (CSBSJU) which is one of the four required chemistry courses for pre-medicine and some pre-physician assistant students, and all chemistry and biochemistry majors. Student perception of inclusion in the course increased through the implementation of group assignments including prompts for individual application of the material. The …

Information Literacy Instruction Services At Rural Community Colleges, Fall 2019 Through Ay 2021/22, Heather Posey Vandyne

Forsyth Library Faculty Publications

This exploratory study examines the instructional practices of two-year institutions located in rural areas during the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and the two academic years that follow. Since the virus commonly known as COVID-19 first made its way to the United States in March 2020, three classes of community college students have had an introduction to higher education unlike any other in living memory. The mixed method approach consists of a survey aimed towards rural college librarians and subsequent in-depth interviews. This study identifies attempts to retain connections with faculty and students, as well as adjustments in …

What Is The Value Of Value Neutrality? Exploring The Tension Between Objective Scholarship And Activist Scholarship, Julia C. Newman May 2024

What Is The Value Of Value Neutrality? Exploring The Tension Between Objective Scholarship And Activist Scholarship, Julia C. Newman

Gettysburg Social Sciences Review

In recent decades there has been an increase in activist scholarship, a specific type of work where scholars seek to generate knowledge and pedagogies that aim to solve issues of inequality through political change. The emergence of activist scholarship poses a challenge to the long-standing ideal of value neutral scholarship and, as a result, universities and academics are grappling with these competing visions of scholarship. Complete value neutrality within scholarship is impossible yet remains a desirable ideal. But in seeking value neutrality the voices of those who have been historically undermined should not have their thoughts dismissed simply because their …

Using Aashe Stars As A Pedagogical Instrument: An Experiential Learning Opportunity In Sustainability Education., Robin Frederick May 2024

Using Aashe Stars As A Pedagogical Instrument: An Experiential Learning Opportunity In Sustainability Education., Robin Frederick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates faculty interest in utilizing the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) as an educational tool within higher education curricula. In recent years, there has been a noticeable uptick in the availability of sustainability courses and programs within higher education. The STARS framework evaluates the quantity and diversity of these offerings across universities. Employing a mixed-method approach, a literature review was conducted, and a survey was disseminated to United States universities to gauge barriers and interest in incorporating STARS within the classroom. Results demonstrate that faculty at institutions with regular STARS submissions show considerable interest, ranging from …

Lincoln's Carnegie Library: A History Of Community And Philanthropy, Emily Blomstedt May 2024

Lincoln's Carnegie Library: A History Of Community And Philanthropy, Emily Blomstedt

Honors Theses

Nebraska received 69 Carnegie libraries from the Carnegie foundation between 1899 and 1922. The first and most expensive Nebraska Carnegie library was granted to Lincoln in December 1899, after a fire destroyed Lincoln’s previous library. Lincoln’s main Carnegie library served the community between 1902 and 1960 before it was torn down in 1961 to build the present-day Bennett Martin library. This thesis explores the 60-year history of Lincoln’s Carnegie library, how it connects to national trends surrounding Carnegie libraries, and the role community and philanthropy played in the development of Lincoln’s public library system. These themes are examined through a …

Nonlocal Frameworks For Differential Equations--Analysis And Numerical Investigations, Layla Montemayor May 2024

Nonlocal Frameworks For Differential Equations--Analysis And Numerical Investigations, Layla Montemayor

Honors Theses

Systems of differential equations have been employed successfully in nearly every scientific field, including natural phenomena, finance, A.I. and machine learning. In a classical set up, a differentiable equation will be associated with a number of initial conditions that will help determine a unique solution to the system. The setting of classical differential equations requires assumptions on the regularity or smoothness of the input functions. Thus, we cannot produce with classical differential equations solutions which are irregular or even have discontinuities.

To overcome some of these challenges brought up by investigations of irregular or singular behavior, different formulations of nonlocal …
