Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to analyze and determine the effectiveness of Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI) when compared with other treatment modalities which includes microfracture, mosaicplasty, abrasionplasty, bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) and matrix assisted autologous chondrocyte implantation (MACI). Methods: Literature search using online databases PubMed, Scopus, National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and Cochrane Controlled Trial Register regarding all cell based therapies and other interventions for chondral lesions was explored. Data on clinical outcome and repair quality were analyzed. Duplicates and irrelevant articles were omitted. Result: Seventeen (n=17) studies were included in this …

The Quality Improvement Quick Strike (QIQS) research program provides research networks participating in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Public Health PBRN Program with supplemental funding and technical assistance to conduct rapid turn-around, time-sensitive research studies that produce evidence about the effectiveness and impact of quality improvement (QI) strategies, public reporting initiatives, and accreditation activities in public health settings. The ramifications of disruptive behavior are detrimental and systemic. This article defines disruptive behaviors and identifies some stressors that cause such behavior. We will also look at what impact disruptive behaviors have on hospitals economically, the emotional toll on health-care teams, and patient safety and quality. Issues. The growing use of illicit ketamine among young adults poses a public health concern in Malaysia. In contrast to medical use of ketamine, illicit use has been reported to produce adverse effects on the urinary tract and, in particular the bladder. Approach and Key Findings. This case report describes a young Malay woman who developed severe bladder symptoms (urinary frequency) after consuming illicit ketamine. A history of illicit ketamine use was initially missed, and she was consequently diagnosed and treated for a urinary tract infection. Her symptoms persisted despite several courses of antibiotics. Background: Cigarette smoking causes significant morbidity and mortality and is a major public health concern worldwide. Primary care doctors are in a unique position that enables them to promote smoking cessation, as smokers are more aware of their health at the time of their clinic visit. Smoking is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases and cancer. Despite the high prevalence of smokers worldwide, smokers are often neglected and not offered effective assistance with quitting their habits. In order to overcome this public health burden, effective treatment is needed to help smokers stop smoking. Among the pharmacological treatments available, nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT), when prescribed in combination with behavioural support, has been proven to be effective in helping a wide range of smokers to quit. Issues. Methadone, a pharmacological agent used to treat heroin dependence is relatively safe, but may cause cardiac arrhythmias in the concurrent presence of other risk factors. Approach and Key Findings. This case report highlights the risk of Torsade de Pointes, a life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia, in a heroin-dependent patient receiving methadone substitution therapy who was prescribed itraconazole for vaginal thrush. The patient presented to the accident and emergency department for chest discomfort and an episode of syncope following two doses of itraconazole (200 mg). Electrocardiogram monitoring at the accident and emergency department showed prolonged rate-corrected QT interval leading to Torsade de …

The purpose of the present study was to characterize, geographically and temporally, the patterns of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) death disparity in 67 Florida jurisdictions, and to determine if the detected trends varied according to age, race, and sex. The space-time scan statistic proposed by Kulldorff et al was used to examine the excess AIDS deaths that occurred between 1987 and 2004. Results were geographically referenced in maps using EpiInfo and EpiMap made available by the Centers for Disease Control. Miami-Dade and the nearby counties including Broward, Martin, and Palm Beach are the most likely clusters (observed/expected: 1505.16) with …

Despite being a common skin dermatosis in the tropics, physicians in the tropics may miss the diagnosis of cutaneous larva migrans for other pruritic skin manifestation. This is especially in those who live in urban housing with no history of travel. Public health decision-makers and researchers currently lack an evidence-based framework for describing, classifying, and comparing public health delivery systems based on their organizational components, operational characteristics, and division of responsibility. Related typologies developed in the health services sector have proven extremely valuable for policy and administrative decision-making as well as for ongoing research. Performance assessment, quality improvement, and accreditation activities are now blossoming in public health—adding urgency to the need for classification and comparison frameworks. This brief describes a newly-developed empirical typology for local public health systems and highlights its policy and managerial applications.

The Central Northern Adelaide Health Service is the largest of South Australia’s health regions, employing more than 16,000 staff* across around 200 separate health units and services* (*figures as at December 2008). The region brings together four major acute hospitals (Royal Adelaide, Lyell McEwin, The Queen Elizabeth and Modbury Hospitals), along with the Hampstead and St Margaret’s Rehabilitation Hospitals and a significant number of mental health and primary health care services. The region also delivers two major, state-wide health services – BreastScreen SA and the SA Dental Service – and has an annual operating budget in excess of $1.5 billion.

The objective of this study was to describe a draft response plan for the tiered triage, treatment, or transportation of 400 adult and pediatric victims (50/million population) of a burn disaster for the first 3 to 5 days after injury using regional resources. Review of meeting minutes and the 11 deliverables of the draft response plan was performed. An extraordinary number of health care quality and patient safety indicators have been developed for hospitals and other health care institutions; however, few meaningful indicators exist for comprehensive assessment of hospital emergency management. Although health care institutions have invested considerable resources in emergency management preparedness, the need for universally accepted, evidence-based performance metrics to measure these efforts remains largely unfulfilled. We suggest that this can be remediated through the application of traditional health care quality paradigms, coupled with novel analytic approaches to develop meaningful performance data in hospital emergency management.
