Evaluation And Reader Response Criticism: Values Implicit In Affective Stylistics, Steven J. Mailloux
Evaluation And Reader Response Criticism: Values Implicit In Affective Stylistics, Steven J. Mailloux
English Faculty Works
The reader is the central concern of reader response criticism, especially of the Iiterature-in-the-Reader Approach of Stanley Fish. Fish claims that his Affective Stylistics is only a descriptive method, and he disavows any evaluative potential for its description of the structure of the reader's response. However, on several levels Affective Stylistics contains implicit values: definitional, prescriptive, comparative, and ethical. Therefore, an evaluative tendency is inherent in the method. In fact, an examination of the premises and practice of Affective Stylistics shows that disorientation during the reading process is seen as both a literary and an ethical criterion of evaluation. This …
Shelley’S Influence On Atalanta In Calydon, Terry L. Meyers
Shelley’S Influence On Atalanta In Calydon, Terry L. Meyers

"A close study of Swinburne's works reveals the accuracy of Paul de Reul's perception that Swinburne "relit ses poetes, s'en impregne, les respire; mele a ses vers des reminiscences qui en font une musique de chambre, un plaisir de connaisseurs."1 In work after work by Swinburne, the alert reader will find subtly-harmonized images, phrases, and ideas that Swinburne assimilated from his wide reading among authors of many lands and times. Among these sources, as we would expect, Shelley has a continuing place. An example of one of the ways Swinburne adopts and reworks material from one of his life- long …

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
A study of ecological themes in Lewis’s Space Trilogy which concludes that Lewis was not (as many assume) hostile to science. Views it as “probably true” that he was “hostile to industrialism and technology,” however. Argues that “Lewis’s ecological concern was related to his vision of religious transcendence.”

In Memoriam: The Way Of A Mystic, Carolyn E. Wagner
Theses & Honors Papers
The purport, therefore, of this thesis will be to discover some of the general characteristics of a mystical experience as accepted by various students of mysticism and to discern whether or not these characteristics are to be found in In Memoriam. Other poems by the Poet Laureate will be used to gain insight into the development of the author's attitude toward mysticism, as well as any influential ideas of such associates as Arthur Henry Hallam, or other contemporary writers, or historical movements. Throughout, there will be an attempt to refute, compromise, or concur with any critical conjectures made regarding Tennyson's …
Grotesque In Dickens, O. James Morgan
Grotesque In Dickens, O. James Morgan
Senior Scholar Papers
Dickens's use of the grotesque in his novels undergoes a variety of changes. For convenience sake, and to better illustrate the developments of the grotesque, I divide the novels into three separate groups. The first group, the period of experiment, included the novels from Pickwick Papers through Barnaby Rudge; the second group, the period of transition, includes the novels from Martin Chuzzlewit through David Copperfield; and the third, the period of a new vision. included the novels from Bleak House through Edwin Drood. Basically, I see the development of the grotesque involving a change in Dickens's conceptions of society, as …
Rebuilt, Jim Sagel
Rebuilt, Jim Sagel
English Language and Literature ETDs
Rebuilt is a collection of free verse, rooted in the cultural traditions of the American Southwest. The sense of magic and the supernatural which runs through the folktales of both the Spanish and Indians of northern New Mexico forms a basis for these poems. This material is not simply lifted from the sources but is altered to shape "rebuilt'' images that attempt to cope with the unreality of the late twentieth century. The thematic concern of these poems centers on frustration, a sense of powerlessness from the most intimate level of personal relationships to a society's guilt over its own …

The American Indian As Metaphor: William Carlos Williams And Hart Crane, Douglas Manning Tedards
The American Indian As Metaphor: William Carlos Williams And Hart Crane, Douglas Manning Tedards
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The American Indian has functioned metaphorically in American literature at least since his characterization as an agent of Satan in the captivity narratives of the 17th century. From then until now, the Indian has tended to represent either the noble savage of the primitive heathen. Moreover, literary criticism dealing with these images has shown a primary interest in the historical accuracy and fairness of portrayal of the Indian and his way of life. That is to say, relatively little critical attention has dealt with the Indian as metaphor, examining how the Indian functions figuratively in the literature. Two excellent studies …
Balance, Symmetry, And Order In As You Like It, Lois Stacy Creed
Balance, Symmetry, And Order In As You Like It, Lois Stacy Creed
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Although many critics have commented on various aspects of balance, symmetry, and order in Shakespeare’s As You like It, others have given the impression that the play uses a carefree series of episodes to give the audience lighthearted entertainment. Few, if any have discussed the extent to which these elements are exemplified through the remarkable skill and craftsmanship of the playwright. The coordination of these elements shows that the work is not, as it frequently has been considered, a simple romance, but is rather a superlative exemplification of Shakespeare’s remarkable artistry. Through the use of various devices, Shakespeare constructs for …
Twenty-Two Poems, Michael John Penny
Twenty-Two Poems, Michael John Penny
English Language and Literature ETDs
The general theme of Twenty-two Poems is man and environment. This theme is divided into several more specific ideas--man's being defeated by the environment, man's sense of himself as defined by the environment (often an environment is the closest possible definition of its inhabitants,) and man's finally understanding the environment. The order of these ideas is the order in which the poems deal with the theme, and the general progression of poems is from despair to optimism. The first poem, "Bear," deals with a character totally defeated by environment, and the last poem, "Heuros," with a character with such complete …
Kate Chopin In Transition From Local To Naturalism, Roselyn Cornwell Hines
Kate Chopin In Transition From Local To Naturalism, Roselyn Cornwell Hines
Theses & Honors Papers
My thesis concentrates on Mrs.Katherine O'Flaherty Chopin, a Southerner who published between 1889 and 1899, and who, for years, was considered an obsolete Local Colorist. She is now enjoying a revival of interest which must be attributed to her importance as a writer who exhibited those precepts upon which modern literature is based - those found in the movements of Realism and Naturalism.
With literary roots in the Local Color mode,Mrs.Chopin's early works exemplify, to some extent at least, all of its principles. While she falters somewhat in the dominant literary technique, we find the Local Colorist's emphasis on geography, …

Faculty Honor Lectures
In defense of myself and the Honors Committee I accept this assignment as a tribute for something, possibly for setting a new record as a hunger artist or for simply staying in town and reciting the penitential psalms daily for over 40 years. I have a sneaking suspicion that they may be exposing me for not being creative in the Greek sense of fulfilling the promise of one's birth. If I had got around to writing Pericles' funeral oration, Dostoevsky's "Grand Inquisitor," or E. E. Cummings' "What if a Much of a Which of a Wind," as I fully intended …
