The Treatment Of Nature In The Poetry Of Coleridge, Esther S. Brenton Jan 1934

The Treatment Of Nature In The Poetry Of Coleridge, Esther S. Brenton

Graduate Thesis Collection

The treatment of nature by the English Romantic poets of the nineteenth century is commonly thought to be confined to the poetry of Wordsworth. Although the bulk of Wordsworth's poetry is concerned with nature, a study of the poetry of the period reveals that the other great Romanticists were also interested in nature. This thesis is written to show how great a factor the treatment of nature is in the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Handbook On Teacher Reading In Junior And Senior High School, Reba Galvin Mack Jan 1934

Handbook On Teacher Reading In Junior And Senior High School, Reba Galvin Mack

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Two thousand high school students in Wisconsin were tested recently in reading; one-third of them tested as sixth grade or below in reading ability.1 One of the most difficult problems confronting the schools of America today is "How shall we make good readers of our students?" That no educators are satisfied with the reading accomplishments in our schools is attested by the great number of articles on reading that appear in current periodicals and educational journals and by the increasing number of books on reading that are being published. So great is the flood on technical treatises on the …

The Oberammergau Passion Play As A Survival Of The Medieval Miracle Play, Carolyn Pulciver Timm Jan 1934

The Oberammergau Passion Play As A Survival Of The Medieval Miracle Play, Carolyn Pulciver Timm

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The contributions of the Mediaeval Miracle Play to that of the Passion Play of Oberammergau are like those of a parent to a child. Life and form have been inherited but the development has gone far beyond the origin. Yet certain elements have continually been preserved in this same form and life

The material for the story of the Oberammergau Play was in the Mediaeval Miracle Play. In both cases the dramatic climax was reached on Good Friday with the gospel of our Lord's death upon the cross. Christ's entry into Jerusalem, the story of His birth, His active career, …

A Comparison Of The Fables Of La Fontaine With The Fables Of Aesop, Mary Louise Dougherty Aug 1933

A Comparison Of The Fables Of La Fontaine With The Fables Of Aesop, Mary Louise Dougherty

Bachelors’ Theses

In this Thesis, La Fontaine and Aesop will be studied and compared by means of those works of theirs which are, perhaps, the best remembered: The Fables.

La Fontaine's and Aesop's Fables are well known for the moral inculcated in each. They have always in mind one purpose ... to teach the reader. La Fontaine used many of the Fables of Aesop as a background for his own Fables. Those of Aesop possessed no graces of style, and so La Fontaine added graces of style to those he wrote.

Moliere's Influence On Congreve, Mildred Atkins Stern Aug 1933

Moliere's Influence On Congreve, Mildred Atkins Stern

Masters Theses

Conclusion:

Congreve owes a debt to Moliere - a debt which varies with the different plays but which can be traced in all four comedies. Plots, characters, and dramatic style recall Moliere. Many of the similarities between Congreve and Moliere may be accidental and allowances must be made for these. But after all allowances are made, the great indebtedness of Congreve to Moliere is evident. We may conclude with Swinburne that "a limb of Moliere would have sufficed to make a Congreve" and yet that "no English writer, on the whole, has so nearly touched the skirts of Moliere."

The Position Of Woman In The Works Of The Brontes, Eleanor Lord Mccue Jun 1933

The Position Of Woman In The Works Of The Brontes, Eleanor Lord Mccue

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to consider the position of woman in the works of the Brontes with particular attention to a comparison of the Bronte heroines with the usual heroines of Victorian fiction. Before approaching their books, however, it will be necessary to learn something of these three sisters whose lives contained so much that set them apart from the typical English novelist of the nineteenth century.

The Dean Of Dime Novelists And The Merriwell Saga, Or, The Life And Career Of William Gilbert Patten, John Levi Cutler May 1933

The Dean Of Dime Novelists And The Merriwell Saga, Or, The Life And Career Of William Gilbert Patten, John Levi Cutler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

William Gilbert Patten is the last and greatest figure in the history of the dime novel. Representing, as he does, the transition of the dime novel writer to the field of the pulp paper magazines, he is the fitting climax to a period of prolific fictioneering unparalleled in the history of literature in any time or place. Of the school of fiction hacks who swamped the country with stories of wild adventure from the Civil War to the World War, not one stands on equal footing with the creator of Frank Merriwell. Judged by any standard he is easily the …

A Study Of "Konigliche Hoheit" -- Thomas Mann, Anne Marie Druml May 1933

A Study Of "Konigliche Hoheit" -- Thomas Mann, Anne Marie Druml

Bachelors’ Theses

The object of my thesis is to study Konigliche Hoheit and through it come to a knowledge of the personality and character of the writer. In the first chapter I have discussed his life and his works and the second, third and fourth chapters are devoted to a study of the "Konigliche Hoheit". My intention is first to give the content of the novel and then follow it up by a criticism of character - and in this the reader can obtain a clear notion of the attributes of Mann's writings as well as his understanding of human emotions. The …

The Treatment Of The Tristan Legend In English Literature Up To The Twentieth Century, Myrtle M. Johnson Jan 1933

The Treatment Of The Tristan Legend In English Literature Up To The Twentieth Century, Myrtle M. Johnson

Graduate Thesis Collection

The purpose of the following study has been to consider the consecutive interpretations of the Tristan legend in English literature down to the present century. In order to appreciate their comparative fidelity to the spirit of the lost primitive poem, it was first necessary to examine the metrical romance of Thomas, "who may be said," writes William Henry Schofield, "to represent the highest achievement of any English poet in the twelfth century," along with other derivatives used in the scholarly and poetic reconstruction, made by Joseph Bedier, of that hypothetical original creation.

Graduate Thesis Collection

In twelfth century France, in Troyes, capital of Champagne, was born Chretien, later designated as Chretien de Troyes. Little is known of his life, but it is supposed that his origins were humble. Possibly he went to school at Reims, there to receive a clerical education, the best that his times afforded.

The Influence Of British Literature Upon Pre-Raphaelite Painting, Veola Leona Bohnert Jan 1933

The Influence Of British Literature Upon Pre-Raphaelite Painting, Veola Leona Bohnert

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It has been the object of the writer, in preparing this thesis, to emphasize the influence of British literature upon the Pre-Rapheelite Brotherhood of painters who lived and worked during the reign of Queen Victoria. It is the hope of the writer to show, in treating these artists who revived the truthfulness of nature as applied to painting, that those who were realists were also idealists, and that those who were romanticists were yet realists in the broader sense of the term, for realism may interpret the larger elements of imagination.

With due recognition of her limited ability, the author …

An Evaluation Of The Place Occupied By The Greek Pastoral Elegy From Its Earliest Appearance To The Present, Alfred Carney Jan 1933

An Evaluation Of The Place Occupied By The Greek Pastoral Elegy From Its Earliest Appearance To The Present, Alfred Carney

Master's Theses

To the student versed in the classics the influence of Greek and Latin pastoral poetry on English Literature is well known. Starting at the time of the Italian Renaissance and encouraged by the Greek Revival several centuries later, the classical influence has permeated our literature more than any other factor. During the time of the Renaissance pastoral poetry had a place of importance equal to that of the equip and the drama. The sweet melodies of Greek rural life reechoed in the eclogues of Vergil had such a charm for later poets that they could not be resisted. Pastoral poetry …

The Catholic Spirit In Modern Poetry, Anna Lacaze

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation

  1. All art sas its underlying philosophy. Poetry which is one of the greatest printed branches of art, has its philosophies which vary greatly indeed. Some poets hold as their philosophy that the highest form of beauty is purely natural and they sing the praises of beauty of form, figure etc. Others hold that the highest form of beauty is intellectual and these praise and glorify the beauty of a well ordered mind. While others hold that man was made for God, and that God is the highest form of beauty. These attempt to portray the relationship of man to God, …

Newman The Master Of Prose Writer, Aline Pepin

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation

  1. In every period of history there are some characters which stand out very prominently for some great achievement, idea or movement. On some occasions one individual occupies this place of honor, as in the case of Napoleon after he saw gallantly quelled the revolt in the city of Toulon during the Revolutionary War. Literature, like history, has its heroes who, with their pen, influence the world. The 19th century produce the diversity of religious opinion and inquiry, colored by the delicacy of expression which is characteristic of the time. The Victorian age enjoyed the many “masters of expression" for it …

The Language Of The Santa Fe Trader, Kathleen Mckee Brophy

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this study is to give a general survey of the language most commonly used on the trail, and to establish the identity of a colloquial trader speech, the product of the Santa Fe Trail and the Santa Fe trade. To accomplish this purpose, a glossary of terms is submitted, prefaced by a discussion of the language sources, and a critical survey of the characteristics of the trader speech. Necessarily, a study of this length must be more of a survey than a comprehensive treatment of the subject.

A Study Of The Revolt In Modern American Literature As Seen In The Novel, Poetry, And Prose Fiction, Dovie Viola Ross Jan 1932

A Study Of The Revolt In Modern American Literature As Seen In The Novel, Poetry, And Prose Fiction, Dovie Viola Ross

Master's Theses

Since the earliest time that the human mind has been known to function it has played with two opposite conceptions ---all is fixed – all is changing. These two conceptions, affording the bases for opposing schools in philosophy and politics and supplying direction for the social forces of conservatism and radicalism, have naturally influenced our interpretation and theories of literature.

The Use Of Classical Mythology In Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene Book I And Ii, Laura E. Rupp Jan 1932

The Use Of Classical Mythology In Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene Book I And Ii, Laura E. Rupp

Graduate Thesis Collection

For the proper understanding of this thesis, it is necessary to state explicitly what it does not attempt to do. It is absolutely not an examination into the sources of Spenser's classical mythology. That research work has already been done in two published studies; namely, The Sources of Spenser's Classical Mythology by A. E. Sawtelle and a second work with the same title by A. S. Randall. The connection of Virgil and Spenser has been treated by M. G. Hughes in Virgil and Spenser.

"La Souveillant" had arrived with documents which stated that Louisiana was to be reannexed to France.

The city was in the greatest jubilation. Louisiana to be re annexed to France ! The young and the old, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of "La Belle France" thrilled at the thought of their mothers' protecting arms around them again. Forgotten was their abandonment by her to the vengeance of O'Reilly. Once more they were to be united. "Vive la Republic Francais !" Most grew eloquent, visionary---happy,
