Recognition And Reversal In Samson Agonistes, June Haig Simons Dec 1972

Recognition And Reversal In Samson Agonistes, June Haig Simons

English Language and Literature ETDs

My study approaches Samson Agonistes by way of the tradition of Renaissance divine drama. The Introduction surveys the criticism of Sam 􀂘 from 1930 to the present and establishes the character of interpretations produced by other approaches. Chapter I surveys Aristotle's Poetics as the conceptual framework within which both Milton and the divine dramatists worked, emphasizing recognition and reversal. Chapter II analyzes adaptation of recognition and reversal in selected plays of the divine drama, revealing development of a method of dramatization that encouraged depiction of inner, spiritual conflict without allegory; plays discussed are John the Baptist, Freewyl, Acolastus, Misogonus, Samson, …

The Rhetoric Of Swift's "A Modest Proposal.", Nancy Jean Conrad Nov 1972

The Rhetoric Of Swift's "A Modest Proposal.", Nancy Jean Conrad

English Language and Literature ETDs

The recognition of Swift's rhetorical method in "A Modest Proposal" is an initial premise in most criticism of the essay. The satiric effect of the method is generally assumed; however, incomplete or inconclusive definitions of the essay's rhetorical structure have resulted in unsatisfying and unsatisfactory commentary on its satire--one critic finding it totally destructive, others failing adequately to account for the constructive purpose they claim to see. A formal rhetorical analysis of "A Modest Proposal," aimed at reconstructing the essay's argumentative structure and determining the structural bases for its effects, is the purpose of this paper. Because it is basically …

Selected Poems, 1970-1972, Thomas John Hill Sep 1972

Selected Poems, 1970-1972, Thomas John Hill

English Language and Literature ETDs

You see, there was this kid about my age, and we were sitting on my driveway in Cupertino, California, and all of a sudden like he springs it on me: "There ain't no Santa Claus." Well, you can imagine what something drastic like this does to an impressionable kid barely out of diapers. I turned to poetry.

The Influence Of William Godwin On The Novels Of Mary Shelley, Katherine Richardson Powers Aug 1972

The Influence Of William Godwin On The Novels Of Mary Shelley, Katherine Richardson Powers

Doctoral Dissertations

The past few decades have seen a revival of interest in the social philosophy of William Godwin and a revaluation of his works. Although Godwin has been viewed as a powerful influence on the works of Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Shelley, little notice has been taken of his influence on the work of his daughter, Mary Shelley. It has, on the contrary, been popular to attribute Mary's Frankenstein to the influence of her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley. Many critics have recognized a close connection between the works of Godwin and Mary, but the comments are limited and general; and most studies …

Osgood Bradbury: A Biobibliographical Study, Francesca J. Ruggieri Aug 1972

Osgood Bradbury: A Biobibliographical Study, Francesca J. Ruggieri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The writer became interested in the lack of information relating to the little-known Maine author of the nineteenth century, Osgood Bradbury. This biobibliographical study carries out a review of his life and work. Bradbury is almost completely unknown in Maine literary circles in spite of having written nearly sixty novels. Many aspects of his life are as nebulous as many of the characters in his own stories. Even his birthdate is suspect, although there is some evidence to indicate that he was born in 1795, in New Gloucester, Maine. The writer found no evidence of his whereabouts from his birthdate …

The Female Warrior In The Renaissance Epic, Phillip Elliott Parotti Jul 1972

The Female Warrior In The Renaissance Epic, Phillip Elliott Parotti

English Language and Literature ETDs

In spite of much critical opinion to the contrary, the major female warriors in the renaissance epics are not reincarnations of the classical Amazons: minor similarities between the Amazons and the renaissance maiden-knights do exist. On the whole, however, the Amazoniar1 theory is inadequate because it unites the unique charm and individuality of the female knights with sterile Amazonian ferocity, a combination which their warm nobility transcends and denies. Instead, the female warriors in the renaissance epics owe their complex mystique to the literary and intellectual traditions surrounding the union of Mars and Venus.

Often interpreted as comic and lasc1vious, …

To Revitalize The Flaccid Garden : A Study Of Milton's Paradise Regained, Daniel Clyde Bartges Jul 1972

To Revitalize The Flaccid Garden : A Study Of Milton's Paradise Regained, Daniel Clyde Bartges

Master's Theses

By 1654, Milton had partaken of misery, neglect, frustration, poverty; temptation, and disillusionment, as do all men; and it was his hope to "justify" (actually to "explain" since, to Milton, God's "ways" do not lend themselves to mortal justification) these plights to his fellow man. He shared the troublesome question of the Puritans: why is there evil in a world created by a beneficent God? A sincere Christian, he hoped to find a solution to this religious embarrassment through Biblical interpretation and subsequent enlightenment.

It is my belief that Paradise Regained constitutes Milton's most concentrated effort toward solving this baffling …

The Glasgow Paradox : A Study Of Ellen Glasgow's Sad Ladies, Frank Alexander Lovelock Jul 1972

The Glasgow Paradox : A Study Of Ellen Glasgow's Sad Ladies, Frank Alexander Lovelock

Master's Theses

This study intends to examine the career of Ellen Glasgow to determine how her personal philosophy is re flected in her work--and more especially in the characters of her long-suffering heroines (the sad ladies). It is hoped that the reader will come to understand how Glasgow moved from an initial phase of hope, through a period of pain and sorrow, and into a final time of despair .

For the purpose of this study, special emphasis has been placed. on the importance of the novels which were written after 1900. It is these novels that have come to be considered …

The Old Road, Dennis C. Gilbert

Senior Scholar Papers

The plot consists of the progression which the characters undergo. For the old man, the plot is his movement away from the earthly existence of the farm and into the physical process of the seasons. For the older grandson, it is the movement away from the past, symbolized by the farm, and into the present symbolized by his marriage and coupling with society. For the younger grandson, the movement is from childhood to the maturity which being alone demands in order for him to survive.

Chaucer's Knight's Tale : A Symbolic Reading, Naomi Pasquine May 1972

Chaucer's Knight's Tale : A Symbolic Reading, Naomi Pasquine

Master's Theses

Chaucer's Knight Tale has called forth much critical comment. Individual lines have been commented upon, characters have been analysed and the resolution of the poem has been discussed. Critics have offered suggestions as to the poem's meaning, but an interpretation that encompasses all aspects of the poem and gives the reader the feeling that all the poetic elements of the poem have been resolved into that interpretation has not been presented. What the reader is looking for is an interpretation that will give the poem what we call today a sense of its own being or an existence of its …

The Fiction Of Kate Chopin, Peter James Peterson Apr 1972

The Fiction Of Kate Chopin, Peter James Peterson

English Language and Literature ETDs

Kate Chopin's extant fiction includes two novels and nearly one hundred short stories and sketches. The present study closely examines that fiction by chronological periods in order to present a coherent view of the author's artistic development and philosophical concerns.

Kate Chopin wrote her first novel, At Fault, after completing only a few short stories. Although the novel is clumsily executed, it introduces most of the themes which characterize her mature work. Her early stories, primarily designed for juvenile and family magazines, feature picturesque characters and sentimental resolutions. As she gradually developed less limiting markets for her work, Mrs. …

Sherwood Anderson And The Art Of American Autobiography, Linda S. Bergmann Jan 1972

Sherwood Anderson And The Art Of American Autobiography, Linda S. Bergmann

Honors Papers

This paper will consider autobiography from these various perspectives in search of a means of evaluation of autobiography in terms of the restrictions and potentials of the genre. The intention, the truth, the theme, or the formal value--alone-- are insufficient for a valid conception of the genre. Their interaction is what makes some autobiographies more than historical curiosities--what make them successful and enduring works of art. This study of American autobiography will focus on Sherwood Anderson's autobiography and autobiographical novel, A Storyteller's Story and Tar. Anderson deals with the familiar themes of American literature and American autobiography : the individual …

The Group Theatre: A Reflection Of The Theatre In The Thirties, Abby Eiferman Schor

Honors Papers

Sing us a song of social significance Or you can sing until you're blue Let meaning shine in every line Or we won't love you. This snatch of lyrics, sung in the International Ladies Garment Workers. Union revue Pins and Needles of 1937 captures an important aspect of the literary spirit of the 1930's. This decade was marked by a tendency of artists towards political and social commitment, a time when the reconstruction of American society and the menace of Fascism was a cause celebre to which artists could rally. American artists had always been interested in changing society, or …

Myths And Legends In The Stories Of Eudora Welty, Robert Keith Brower Jan 1972

Myths And Legends In The Stories Of Eudora Welty, Robert Keith Brower

Master's Theses

Wright Morris suggests that in The Territory Ahead that the American writer's imagination has been crippled by the nostalgia that drives it to a preoccupation with the mythic past. Like any other generalization, there are several glaring exceptions to this statement, and one of the most obvious of these exceptions ca be found in the case of Eudora Welty. Miss Welty has continually exhibited a great knowledge of mythology and American folklore, and has utilized this knowledge extensively in her stories. However, it is safe to say that rather than being crippled, Miss Welty's imagination has been greatly enhanced and …
