Praise As A Learned Behaviour, Rebekah Jensen

Tutor's Column

Writing Centers should teach tutors how to praise to create a better experience for students and tutors alike. Tutors are often encouraged to give praise in their comments and conversations with students, but are rarely instructed on how to do so effectively. This article examines the purpose of praise in tutoring, why it is important for tutors to learn how to praise, and what strategies may be used to teach praise to tutors.

Let’S Talk: Training Anxiety Out Of New Tutors, Nichelle Pomeroy

This paper focuses on the author’s experience becoming a new tutor at Utah State University’s Writing Center. The author gives suggestions on what can be done to ease anxiety in new tutors during their first few sessions. Additional training is suggested with collaborative efforts between new and experienced tutors along with familiarization with logistical aspects.
