Comparison In Factors Affecting Electrochemical Properties Of Thermal-Reduced Graphene Oxide For Supercapacitors, Peng Xiao, Da-Hui Wang, Jun-Wei Lang Dec 2014

Comparison In Factors Affecting Electrochemical Properties Of Thermal-Reduced Graphene Oxide For Supercapacitors, Peng Xiao, Da-Hui Wang, Jun-Wei Lang

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this paper, thermal-reduced graphene oxide (T-RGO) materials are synthesized by modified Hummer’s method, followed by thermal reduction under argon atmosphere at different temperatures. Electrochemical investigations show that, for T-RGO electrodes, good electrical conductivity is necessary and the surface functional groups play more significant role than the specific surface area in determining the electrochemical capacitance. The T-RGO obtained at 900 °C (T-RGO900) with a relatively high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area (314 m2·g-1) and a high electrical conductivity (2421 S·m-1) shows a low specific capacitance of 56 F·g-1. In comparison, the T-RGO obtained …

A Novel Transport Based Model For Wire Media And Its Application To Scattering Problems, Ebrahim Forati Dec 2014

A Novel Transport Based Model For Wire Media And Its Application To Scattering Problems, Ebrahim Forati

Theses and Dissertations

Artificially engineered materials, known as metamaterials, have attracted the interest of researchers because of the potential for novel applications. Effective modeling of metamaterials is a crucial step for analyzing and synthesizing devices. In this thesis, we focus on wire medium (both isotropic and uniaxial) and validate a novel transport based model for them.

Scattering problems involving wire media are computationally intensive due to the spatially dispersive nature of homogenized wire media. However, it will be shown that using the new model to solve scattering problems can simplify the calculations a great deal.

For scattering problems, an integro-differential equation based on …

Structural, Electronic And Catalytic Properties Of Graphene-Supported Platinum Nanoclusters, Ioanna Fampiou Nov 2014

Structural, Electronic And Catalytic Properties Of Graphene-Supported Platinum Nanoclusters, Ioanna Fampiou

Doctoral Dissertations

Carbon materials are predominantly used as catalytic supports due to their high surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, resistance to corrosion and structural stability. Graphene, a 2D monolayer of graphite, with its excellent thermal, electronic and mechanical features, has been considered a promising support material for next generation metal-graphene nanocatalysts. The main focus of this dissertation is to investigate the properties of such metal-graphene nanocomposites using computational methods, and to develop a comprehensive understanding of the experimentally observed enhanced catalytic activity of graphene-supported Platinum (Pt) clusters. In particular, we seek to understand the role of graphene supports on the ground-state morphology …

Boosting Electrocatalytic Activity Of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene/Carbon Nanotube Composite For Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Yu Zhang, Jin-Song Hu, Wen-Jie Jiang, Lin Guo, Zi-Dong Wei, Li-Jun Wan Oct 2014

Boosting Electrocatalytic Activity Of Nitrogen-Doped Graphene/Carbon Nanotube Composite For Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Yu Zhang, Jin-Song Hu, Wen-Jie Jiang, Lin Guo, Zi-Dong Wei, Li-Jun Wan

Journal of Electrochemistry

Developing low-cost catalysts with high electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has recently attracted much attention because the sluggish ORR currently limits the performance and commercialization of fuel cells and metal-air batteries as well. Nitrogen doped carbon materials have been considered as a promising candidate for the replacement of high-cost and scarce Pt-based catalysts although their electrocatalytic activity still needs to be much improved. In this work, an improved nitrogen-doped graphene/carbon nanotubes composite (N-rGO/CNT) was developed as an efficient ORR electrocatalyst. It was found that the ORR activity of N-rGO/CNT composite could be significantly enhanced by introducing iron in …

Preparation And Electrochemical Behavior Of Pbo/Gn/Ac, Yun-Fang Gao, Yan-Ping Wang, Qiu-Shi Yao, Fu-Hua Wang, Dong-Lei Ren, Xin Xu

Journal of Electrochemistry

The lead oxide/graphene/activated carbon (PbO/GN/AC) composite materials were prepared by impregnating commercial activated carbon and graphene in saturated lead nitrate solution followed by calcination. The structures and morphologies of the composite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results show that PbO crystals (about 200 nm) were dispersed uniformly on the surface of activated carbon and graphene. Electrochemical data indicate that the composite exhibited good electrochemical performances. The PbO/GN/AC composite possessed the higher over-potential of hydrogen evolution and the high specific capacitance of 312.6 F·g-1, while the internal resistance …

High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries And Sodium-Ion Pseudocapacitors Based On Mos2/Graphene Composites, Yunxiao Wang, Shulei Chou, David Wexler, Hua-Kun Liu, S X. Dou

Shi Xue Dou

Sodium-ion energy storage, including sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) and electrochemical capacitive storage (NICs), is considered as a promising alternative to lithium-ion energy storage. It is an intriguing prospect, especially for large-scale applications, owing to its low cost and abundance. MoS2 sodiation/desodiation with Na ions is based on the conversion reaction, which is not only able to deliver higher capacity than the intercalation reaction, but can also be applied in capacitive storage owing to its typically sloping charge/discharge curves. Here, NIBs and NICs based on a graphene composite (MoS2/G) were constructed. The enlarged d-spacing, a contribution of the graphene matrix, and the …

Transport And Optical Properties Of Low-Dimensional Complex Systems, Andrii Iurov Oct 2014

Transport And Optical Properties Of Low-Dimensional Complex Systems, Andrii Iurov

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Over the last five years of my research work, I, my research was mainly concerned with certain crucial tunneling, transport and optical properties of novel low-dimensional graphitic and carbon-based materials as well as topological insulators. Both single-electron and many-body problems were addressed. We investigated the Dirac electrons transmission through a potential barrier in the presence of circularly polarized light. An anomalous photon-assisted enhanced transmission is predicted and explained in a comparison with the well-known Klein paradox. It is demonstrated that the perfect transmission for nearly-head-on collision in an infinite graphene is suppressed in gapped dressed states of electrons, which is …

Preparation Of Pt-Tio2/Graphene Composites With High Catalytic Activity Towards Methanol Oxidation And Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Li Qi, Ying Yin, Wen-Guang Tu, Bing-Bing Wu, Zhao-Sheng Wang, Jian-Guo Liu, Jun Gu, Zhi-Gang Zou

Journal of Electrochemistry

A series of graphene-supported TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2/G) with different TiO2 contents were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method, and then the Pt-TiO2/G catalysts were successfully prepared by reducing Pt-precursor with microwave technique. Compared with Pt-G catalysts, the catalytic performance toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) of Pt-TiO2/G catalysts was improved due to the addition of TiO2. However, the excessive TiO2 would lead to a poor catalytic performance of Pt-TiO2/G catalysts because of the low electrical conductivity of TiO2.

Energy Deposition In A Graphene Field Effect Transistor Based Radiation Detector, Nickolas Upole, Robert Bean, Allen Garner Aug 2014

Energy Deposition In A Graphene Field Effect Transistor Based Radiation Detector, Nickolas Upole, Robert Bean, Allen Garner

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

The development of high-performance radiation detectors is essential for commercial, scientific, and security applications [1]. Due to the unique electronic properties of graphene (high-speed, low-noise), recent radiation detectors utilize graphene field effect transistors to sense charge carriers produced by radiation interactions in a gated semiconductor [2]. A study of the energy deposition due to the transport of gamma rays and electrons/positrons through typical elemental and compound semiconductors (Si, Ge, GaAs, and CdTe) will allow for a material optimization of these detectors. Geant4, a Monte Carlo based program that simulates the passage of particles through matter, was used to simulate Compton …

Theoretical Studies Of The Growth And Functionality Of Layered Materials, Wei Chen Aug 2014

Theoretical Studies Of The Growth And Functionality Of Layered Materials, Wei Chen

Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis, we present several projects on the growth and functionality of layered materials, using density functional theory (DFT) method and phenomenological modeling approach. Beyond the understanding of growth mechanisms and exploration of properties, we propose novel avenues to realize controllable growth processes and layered materials with desirable properties. The contents have three major parts:

(1) Graphene growth on Cu(111) and Ni(111) substrates. We first demonstrate that the inherent multi-orientational degeneracy of the graphene islands on Cu(111) in the early stages of nucleation could result in the prevalence of grain boundaries (GBs). Next, we propose a possible solution to …

Nanoscale Manipulation Of Pristine And Functionalized Freestanding Graphene Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Matthew Ackerman Aug 2014

Nanoscale Manipulation Of Pristine And Functionalized Freestanding Graphene Using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Matthew Ackerman

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over the past ten years the 2D material graphene has attracted an enourmous amount of attention from researchers from across diciplines and all over the world. Many of its outstanding electronic properties are present only when it is not interacting with a substrate but is instead freestanding. In this work I demonstrate that pristine and functionalized freestanding graphene can be imaged using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and that imaging a flexible 2D surface is fundamentally different from imaging a bulk material due to the attraction between the STM tip and the sample. This attraction can be used to manipulate …

Adsorption Of Halogenated Aliphatic Contaminants By Graphene Nanomaterials: Comparison With Carbon Nanotubes And Granular Activated Carbons, Yang Zhou Aug 2014

Adsorption Of Halogenated Aliphatic Contaminants By Graphene Nanomaterials: Comparison With Carbon Nanotubes And Granular Activated Carbons, Yang Zhou

All Theses

Graphene nanomaterials are two-dimensional single layer sp2 hybridized carbon atoms densely packed in a hexagonal honeycomb lattice and can be visualized as basic building blocks for fullerenes, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and graphite. In addition, they are hydrophobic nanomaterials and possess a large specific surface area (SSA), thus they have been evaluated as promising adsorbents to remove synthetic organic compounds (SOCs) from water. As with granular activated carbons (GACs) and CNTs, adsorption behavior of SOCs on graphene depends on the physicochemical properties of the adsorbents (e.g., specific surface area, pore size distribution and surface chemistry), SOCs (e.g., hydrophobicity, molecular size and …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This study was focused on how to improve the gas sensing properties of resistive gas sensors based on reduced graphene oxide. Sol-airbrush technology was utilized to prepare reduced graphene oxide films using porous zinc oxide films as supporting materials mainly for carbon dioxide sensing applications. The proposed film structure improved the sensitivity and the response/recovery speed of the sensors compared to those of the conventional ones and alleviated the restrictions of sensors' performance to the film thickness. In addition, the fabrication technology is relatively simple and has potential for mass production in industry. The improvement in the sensitivity and the …

Preparation And Characterizations Of Highly Filled Graphene-Polybenzoxazine Composites, R Plengudomkit, M Okhawilai, S Rimdusit

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

In recent years, graphene has been extensively utilized in electronic applications due to its superior electrical conductivity, high thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical properties [1, 2]. This research emphasized on the development of graphene (xGnP Grade H, XG Science, USA) filled composites based on polybenzoxazine particularly at high graphene loading (0-60wt%) [3, 4]. It was found that the density of the obtained composites was linearly increased with graphene content and the values were determined to be 1.185-1.637 g/cm3 which followed the rule of mixture suggesting negligible void in the composites samples. Mechanical and thermal properties of the graphene filled polybenzoxazine …

Graphene-Supported Metal Nanoparticles And Its Potential Civilian And Military Applications, Hany A. Elazab Dr

Chemical Engineering

It is now well established that nanoparticles (1-100 nm) exhibit unique chemical and physical properties that differ from those of the corresponding bulk materials. The dependence of the properties of nanoscale materials on the size, shape and composition of the nanocrystal is a phenomenon of both fundamental scientific interest and many practical and technological applications. These properties are often different, and sometimes superior, to those of the corresponding bulk materials. Due to its unique properties and high surface area, Graphene has become a good candidate as an effective solid support for metal catalysts. The Nobel Prize in Physics for 2010 …

Quantitative Analysis Of Structure And Bandgap Changes In Graphene Oxide Nanoribbons During Thermal Annealing, Yu Zhu, Xianyu Li, Qinjia Cai, Zhengzong Sun, Gilberto Casillas, Miguel Jose-Yacaman, Rafael Verduzco, James Tour

Yu Zhu

Graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs) are wide bandgap semiconductors that can be reduced to metallic graphene nanoribbons. The transformation of GONRs from their semiconductive to the metallic state by annealing has attracted significant interest due to its simplicity. However, the detailed process by which GONRs transform from widebandgap semiconductors to semimetals with a near zero bandgap is unclear. As a result, precise control of the bandgap between these two states is not currently achievable. Here, we quantitatively examine the removal of oxygen-containing groups and changes in the bandgap during thermal annealing of GONRs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show the progressive removal …

Graphene and single-walled carbon nanotubes are carbon materials that exhibit excellent electrical conductivities and large specific surface areas. Theoretical work suggested that a covalently bonded graphene/single-walled carbon nanotube hybrid material would extend those properties to three dimensions, and be useful in energy storage and nanoelectronic technologies. Here we disclose a method to bond graphene and single-walled carbon nanotubes seamlessly during the growth stage. The hybrid material exhibits a surface area 42,000m2 g1 with ohmic contact from the vertically aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes to the graphene. Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, we observed the covalent transformation of sp2 carbon between …

Discrete Strain Engineering In Graphene, Cedric Marcus Horvath May 2014

Discrete Strain Engineering In Graphene, Cedric Marcus Horvath

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Graphene has a number of fascinating mechanical and electrical properties. Strain engineering in graphene is the attempt to control its properties with mechanical strain. Previous research in this area has come up with an approach using a continuum theory to describe the strain induced gauge fields in graphene; however, this approach is only valid for small strains (5% at most). A discrete framework is being developed in Arkansas that can more accurately calculate the deformation (electrical) and (pseudo-)magnetic gauge fields created by large strains. Computational simulations were carried out and used to get discrete atomic positions for strained, suspended graphene …

Fabrication And Electrochemical Properties Of Graphene-Zno Nanocomposite, Chuan-Ling Men, Wan Wang, Jun Cao

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this work, the graphene-ZnO nanocomposite was successfully synthesized through a one-step solvothermal approach, using ethylene glycol as the solvent and reducing agent. The ZnO particles could be attached to the surfaces and edges of graphene sheet. The electrochemical performance of the nanocomposite was investigated by performing cyclic voltammetry, A.C. impedance and chronopotentiometry tests in 6 mol·L-1 KOH. The results showed that the graphene-ZnO nanocomposite exhibited a nice electrochemical specific capacitance of 115 F·g-1 determined in cyclic voltammetry test, or 71 F·g-1 evaluated in chronopotentiometry test and good reversible charge/discharge behavior.

Carbon Allotrope Dependence On Temperature And Pressure During Thermal Decomposition Of Silicon Carbide, Munson J. Anderson Mar 2014

Carbon Allotrope Dependence On Temperature And Pressure During Thermal Decomposition Of Silicon Carbide, Munson J. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Bulk CNT and graphene films form on SiC using a metal-catalyst-free thermal decomposition approach. In this work, the background vacuum pressure and temperature used in the decomposition process are varied to investigate their impact on the type and quality of carbon allotrope formed on the SiC substrate. The carbon nanostructure growth is performed using two approaches, both of which involve intense heating (1400-1700°C) of SiC under moderate vacuum conditions (0.01 - 0.00001 Torr). The first growth method uses a conventional graphite resistance furnace capable of annealing waferscale samples over 1700°C under vacuum. Using this approach, post-growth characterization is performed using …

Aqueous Dispersions Of Reduced Graphene Oxide And Multi Wall Carbon Nanotubes For Enhanced Glucose Oxidase Bioelectrode Performance, Willo Grosse, Joffrey Champavert, Sanjeev Gambhir, Gordon G. Wallace, Simon E. Moulton

Gordon Wallace

Aqueous dispersions of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were fabricated through a modified chemical reduction method. The significant advantage of the method developed here is the omission of any stabilising compound or organic solvent to obtain stable rGO-MWCNT dispersions. Significantly biological entities, in this case the enzyme glucose oxidase (GOx), can be successfully incorporated into the dispersion. These dispersions were characterised using XPS, SEM, zeta potential and particle size measurements which showed that the dispersion stability is not sacrificed with the addition of GOx, and significantly, the electrical properties of the rGO and MWCNTs are …

Fabrication Of Graphene Electrodes By Electrophoretic Deposition And Their Synergistic Effects With Pedot And Platinum, Widsanusan Chartarrayawadee, Simon E. Moulton, Chee O. Too, Gordon G. Wallace

Gordon Wallace

This research presents a useful electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique for electrode fabrication from an aqueous colloidal solution of graphene to produce graphene electrodes by the deposition of graphene on to indium-tin oxide (ITO) coated glass. Resultant graphene electrodes are composited with conducting polymer (PEDOT), and platinum nanoparticles, to investigate their synergistic effects. Firstly, PEDOT is composited with graphene by electropolymerization on to the graphene layer. The graphene/PEDOT electrodes demonstrate an improvement in electrochemical response in tetrabutylammonium perchlorate/ acetonitrile solution. Secondly, graphene electrodes are composited with platinum by EPD of platinum nanoparticles on to the graphene layer. The resultant graphene/platinum electrodes …

Gordon Wallace

This paper reports on a facile synthesis method for reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) nanocomposites. The initial step involves the use of graphene oxide to disperse the MWNTs, with subsequent reduction of the resultant graphene oxide/MWNTs composites using l-ascorbic acid (LAA) as a mild reductant. Reduction by LAA preserves the interaction between the rGO sheets and MWNTs. The dispersion-containing rGO/MWNTs composites was characterized and electrophoretically deposited anodically onto glassy carbon electrodes to form high surface area films for capacitance testing. Pseudo capacitance peaks were observed in the rGO/MWNTs composite electrodes, resulting in superior performance with capacitance values up …

Key points in the formation of liquid crystalline (LC) dispersions of graphene oxide (GO) and their processability via wet-spinning to produce long lengths of micrometer-dimensional fibers and yarns are addressed. Based on rheological and polarized optical microscopy investigations, a rational relation between GO sheet size and polydispersity, concentration, liquid crystallinity, and spinnability is proposed, leading to an understanding of lyotropic LC behavior and fiber spinnability. The knowledge gained from the straightforward formulation of LC GO "inks" in a range of processable concentrations enables the spinning of continuous conducting, strong, and robust fibers at concentrations as low as 0.075 wt%, eliminating …

By controlling the SWNT-rGO electrode composition and thickness to attain the appropriate porosity and tortuosity, the electroactive surface area is maximized while rapid diffusion of the electrolyte through the electrode is maintained. This leads to an increase in exchange current density between the electrode and electrolyte which results in enhanced thermocell performance.

We introduce soft self-assembly of ultralarge liquid crystalline (LC) graphene oxide (GO) sheets in a wide range of organic solvents overcoming the practical limitations imposed on LC GO processing in water. This expands the number of known solvents which can support amphiphilic self-assembly to ethanol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran, N-dimethylformamide, N-cyclohexyl-2-pyrrolidone, and a number of other organic solvents, many of which were not known to afford solvophobic self-assembly prior to this report. The LC behavior of the as-prepared GO sheets in organic solvents has enabled us to disperse and organize substantial amounts of aggregate-free single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs, up to 10 wt …

Covalently Linked Biocompatible Graphene/Polycaprolactone Composites For Tissue Engineering, Sepidar Sayyar, Eoin Murray, Brianna C. Thompson, Sanjeev Gambhir, David L. Officer, Gordon G. Wallace

Gordon Wallace

Two synthesis routes to graphene/polycaprolactone composites are introduced and the properties of the resulting composites compared. In the first method, mixtures are produced using solution processing of polycaprolactone and well dispersed, chemically reduced graphene oxide and in the second, an esterification reaction covalently links polycaprolactone chains to free carboxyl groups on the graphene sheets. This is achieved through the use of a stable anhydrous dimethylformamide dispersion of graphene that has been highly chemically reduced resulting in mostly peripheral ester linkages. The resulting covalently linked composites exhibit far better homogeneity and as a result, both Young's modulus and tensile strength more …

Reduced Graphene Oxide With Superior Cycling Stability And Rate Capability For Sodium Storage, Yunxiao Wang, Shulei Chou, Hua-Kun Liu, S X. Dou

Shi Xue Dou

Sodium ion battery is a promising electrical energy storage system for sustainable energy storage applications due to the abundance of sodium resources and their low cost. In this communication, the electrochemical properties of sodium ion storage in reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were studied in an electrolyte consisting of 1 M NaClO4 in propylene carbonate (PC). The experimental results show that the RGO anode allowed significant sodium ion insertion, leading to higher capacity at high current density compared to the previously reported results for carbon materials. This is due to the fact that RGO possesses higher electrical conductivity and is a …
