The problem of differentiating the informational content of coding (exons) and non-coding (introns) regions of a DNA sequence is one of the central problems of genomics. The introns are estimated to be nearly 95% of the DNA and since they do not seem to participate in the process of transcription of amino-acids, they have been termed “junk DNA.” Although it is believed that the non-coding regions in genomes have no role in cell growth and evolution, demonstration that these regions carry useful information would tend to falsify this belief. This work presents design, implementation and test of a built-in current sensor (BICS) for ∆IDDQ testing of a CMOS 12-bit charge scaling digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The sensor uses power discharge method for the fault detection. The sensor operates in two modes, the test mode and the normal mode. In the test mode, the BICS is connected to the circuit under test (CUT) which is DAC and detects abnormal currents caused by manufacturing defects. In the normal mode, BICS is isolated from the CUT. The Gas Assisted Gravity Drainage (GAGD) process, currently being developed at LSU, is designed to take advantage of gravity to allow vertical segregation between the injected gas and reservoir crud oil due to their density differences. GAGD is recommended for use with CO2 gas. CO2 dissolves in oil and causes both swelling and viscosity reduction of oil. The GAGD process uses the existing vertical wells for CO2 gas injection, and a horizontal well near the bottom of the payzone for oil production. In this thesis, two data sets collected in grinding process under different cutting and wheel conditions were studied. One is the cutting forces in three directions, i.e. X, Y and Z, collected under two different cutting conditions. The other one is the acoustic emission (AE) signals collected under different wheel conditions(sharp and dull). Network coding is a promising technique to improve the throughput of communication networks. In the thesis, we investigate linear Boolean network codes on a special class of multicast networks, called combination networks. Using companion matrices of primitive polynomials over finite fields, we design a class of symmetric linear Boolean network codes from Reed-Solomon codes for single-source combination networks. We also prove that, for some cases, the linear Boolean network codes are optimal in the sense of minimum network uses. A computationally efficient algorithm using the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm for multiple wideband source localization in the near field of a sensor array/area is addressed in this thesis. Our idea is to decompose the observed sensor data, which is a superimposition of multiple sources, into the individual components in the frequency domain and then estimate the corresponding location parameters associated with each component separately. Minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) is an important optimization parameter for an enhanced oil recovery process involving Carbon Dioxide or hydrocarbon gas injection. Therefore an accurate experimental measurement is required to determine the MMP. The MMP for a gas-oil system is directly related to the interfacial tension between the injected gas and the reservoir crude oil. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a powerful technique used to exponentially amplify specific DNA sequences of interest through repetitive temperature cycling. The temperatures used in PCR are typically 90°C - 94°C for denaturation, 50°C - 70°C for renaturation, and 70°C - 75°C for extension. The double-stranded helix of nucleotides, carrying the genetic information, is separated during denaturation, reacts with chemical primers during renaturation, and becomes a complete, replica, double-stranded DNA helix structure during extension. IN738LC, a nickel based superalloy has wide applications in the gas turbine engines because of its ability to retain its strength at high temperatures involved. The stability of the γ' Ni3Al (Ti, Nb) precipitate microstructure which gives the alloy its strength is very important. After an initial annealing at 1200°C for 4 hours and water quenching, a uniform distribution of single size (70nm) γ' fine precipitates is obtained. The influence of the oligochaete Ilyodrilus templetoni on the degradation of phenanthrene and benzo(a)pyrene present in a field-contaminated sediment was studied in microcosm experiments. Results indicate an enhanced degradation of phenanthrene and benzo(a)pyrene in microcosms inhabited by I. templetoni. Total phenanthrene reduction was observed at an average of 9.78 % in worm microcosms, while no reduction was observed in the control microcosms. Benzo(a)pyrene reduction, on the other hand, was determined at 78.60 % and 30.04 % in worm and control microcosms, respectively. Static Low Density Media filters have been used over the past two decades for nitrification and solids removal in high-density recirculating aquaculture systems. The SLDM filters are submerged biofilters which contain a plastic media with a density less than that of water. A poled lead zirconate titanate Pb(Zr52Ti48)O3 (PZT) polycrystalline piezoelectric ceramic energy-carrying element of a compact explosive-driven power generator was subjected to a longitudinal explosive shock wave (the wave front traveled along the polarization vector P0). The shock compression of the element at pressures of 1.5-3.8 GPa caused almost complete depolarization of the sample. Shock wave velocity in the PZT was determined to be 3.94 ± 0.27 km/s. The electric charge stored in a ferroelectric, due to its remnant polarization, is released during a short time interval and can be transformed into pulsed power.
