This thesis continues the Virtual Cockpit VC research which investigates distributed interactive virtual flying, environments. The VC vl.0 used the SIMNET protocols to only communicate position and orientation over a common network. A simple cockpit instrumentation configuration and limited head- tip display, HUD showed aircraft state. With VC vl.0 weapons or sensors could not interact in the simulation environment. The VC v2.0 transitions from the SIMNET protocol to a partial implementation of the Distributed Interactive Simulation DIS v2.0.3 protocol. Simulated radar and forward looking infra-red FLIR sensors were developed to aid operator detection and designation when employing various munition types. …

In response to the need for a more realistic, interactive, and immersive space simulation system, the Joint National Intelligence Defense Staff JNIDS has sponsored the development of the Satellite Modeler at the Air Force Institute of Technology AFIT. The Satellite Modeler SM is a virtual environment VE application that allows analyst-users to enter a virtual near- Earth space environment and visualize realistic satellite models performing accurate orbital motion. With shrinking budgets and fewer personnel, future military training will rely heavily on simulated environments. The goal for this training is to reduce cost while maintaining readiness and unparalleled capability for all levels of military command. This thesis effort, the Synthetic Battle Bridge SBB , provides a real-time simulated environment for military commanders to observe on-going computer simulations of varying participation levels and helps them wring the most from a simulation. The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) is developing a distributed interactive flight simulator, the Virtual Cockpit, using commercial graphics workstations and helmet mounted displays. The Virtual Cockpit communicates with other simulators via local and long-haul networks using the SIMNET protocol. The work reported in this thesis focuses on developing the terrain database for the synthetic environment and on rendering the pilot's view of the database. There are many different file formats for describing 3- dimensional geometric polygonal objects. An analysis of three formats, AFIT GEOM, the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) DRP, and Software Systems' Flight, is presented. Each file …
