The latest lower-limb prosthetic designs have been incorporated with dynamic elastic response (DER) components to enhance prosthesis flexibility, which are suggested to be beneficial to gait. Although DER prosthetic. feet are preferred by most transtibial amputees and their benefits to gait are supported by some biomechanical studies, many are still utilizing the simple conventional solid ankle cushioned heel (SACH) designs because of the lower cost. The monolimb, a transtibial prosthesis with the socket and the shank molded from a single piece of thermoplastic material, perhaps is an alternative to DER feet for providing flexibility at the shank. Three passes of plate rolling during vertical-horizontal rolling process are simulated with explicit dynamic finite element method and updating geometric method. The equivalent strain and stress fields, and shape change at the head and tail of slab during rolling are obtained. The calculated result of the shape at the head and tail of slab is in good agreement with the measured one. The explicit dynamic finite element method and updating geometric method can be used effectively to analyze the multipass vertical-horizontal (V-H) rolling process. © 2006 Central Iron and Steel Research Institute.

This paper presents human visual perception experiment results for a computer graphics rendering technique introduced in ACSC'05. In order to achieve a good immersive virtual reality experience, it is necessary to have at least 60 frames per second to ensure smooth motion. It is also necessary to have low end-to-end latency so that user interaction does not suffer from perceptible delays in images presented to the eyes. The Address Recalculation Pipeline (ARP) architecture reduces end-to-end latency in immersive Head Mounted Display (HMD) virtual reality systems. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the flexural behavior of a new type of hybrid FRP-concrete-steel member as well as results from a corresponding theoretical model based on the plane section assumption and the fiber element approach. We consider Exel's new construction of a crossed product of a $C^*$-algebra $A$ by an endomorphism $\alpha$. We prove that this crossed product is universal for an appropriate family of covariant representations, and we show that it can be realised as a relative Cuntz-Pimsner algbera. We describe a necessary and sufficient condition for the canonical map from $A$ into the crossed product to be injective, and present several examples to demonstrate the scope of this result. We also prove a gauge-invariant uniqueness theorem for the crossed product.

Given a k-graph Λ and an element p of Nk, we define the dual k-graph, pΛ. We show that when Λ is row-finite and has no sources, the C*-algebras C*(Λ) and C*(pΛ) coincide. We use this isomorphism to apply Robertson and Steger's results to calculate the K-theory of C*(Λ) when Λ is finite and strongly connected and satisfies the aperiodicity condition.

Interaction with embedded devices can take on many forms. This paper describes the implementation of an interactive information network and intuitive mechanisms for the personal or home environment using Bluetooth wireless communication and Radio Frequency ID (RFID) tag technology. This approach combines the freedom associated with wireless communication and the ability to detect user commands by RFID location information. Embedded Access Points are described along with intuitive mechanisms including digital pen/paper, interactive information board and mobile computing devices. Specifically, the web access point facilitated an Internet over Bluetooth link and was found to provide an average data rate of 15.97kbps. …

A new method for estimating directions-of-arrival (DOA) of multiple spatial narrowband signals in the presence of spatially nonuniform independent sensor noise with unknown covariance is presented. An estimate of the colored noise-covariance matrix is given first. The received data for parameter estimation is then prewhitened using the estimated noise covariance, hence, overcoming the highly biased estimates. Furthermore, the performance improvement of standard MUSIC method is confirmed by computer simulations. © 2006 IEEE.

The behavior of transversal cracks on the surface of the slab corner during vertical and horizontal (V-H) rolling process with flat vertical roll and groove vertical roll was simulated by explicit dynamic finite element method. The closure and growth of crack and the contact pressure on surfaces of the crack in contacting zone between slab and roll during rolling process were analyzed. The results showed that during vertical rolling process, when the groove vertical roll is used, the maximum contact pressure on surfaces of the crack is 115 MPa, and the closure of crack is stable; when the flat vertical …

The 5S Method takes an Activity Theory approach to stakeholder elicitation. We interview stakeholders and build up a network of Activities according to Activity Theory precepts. These Activities are hierarchically decomposed into the smaller units of Action and Operation. This comprises a useful conceptual map of the human motivations and dependencies prior to insertion of the new computer based system. The performance of the Channelized Hotelling Observer (CHO) was compared to that of human observers for determining optimum parameters for the iterative OS-EM image reconstruction method for the task of defect detection in myocardial SPECT images. The optimum parameters were those that maximized defect detectability in the SPECT images. Low noise, parallel SPECT projection data, with and without an anterior, inferior or lateral LV wall defect, were simulated using the Monte Carlo method.
