A Piezoelectric Actuated Scanning Mirror System Utilizing A Type One Control Loop, David Gibbs

The purpose of this thesis is to design and build an improved control loop for a piezoelectric actuated scanning mirror system. A control system has been built having zero steady state position error and an 80 Hertz bandwidth. This was achieved by placing the piezoelectric actuator in the feedback path of an operational amplifier and placing series cascaded notch filters and lead compensators in the forward path of the control loop. A prototype system, including compensation and feedback, is developed. Its performance compares favorably with that of the system model. It is capable of plus and minus 1.7 degrees of …

Determining the device width to length ratios has typically been an iterative process for the custom IC digital design engineer. After the logic design phase is complete for a particular circuit, the designer would make an educated guess at the device sizes. Then by trial and error, using SPICE or another circuit simulator, suitable sizes would be determined. Unfortunately, this approach is time consuming and the resulting sizes are often a good bit larger than they need to be to maintain a certain speed because of the lack of a rigorous sizing methodology. An examination of forward crosstalk in microstrip transmission lines is presented through a computer simulation using SPICE. A non-resistive lumped L-C transmission line model is modified to include capacitive and inductive coupling from adjacent lines. Two adjacent microstrip transmission lines are modeled, and simulation results in both the time and frequency domains are shown. The time domain or transient analysis looks at the effect of rise times on crosstalk. Rise times in the range of 100 to 1000 nanoseconds (ns) are considered. The frequency analysis shows the crosstalk frequency response over the range of 100 to 1600 kilohertz (kHz). The …

While specialized hardware description languages allow for maximum capability and efficiency in a design automation system, the use of a general purpose language in the same role can make the system more available or more available or more practical for a larger set of users. This project demonstrates the use of ADA* for the description and simulation of small digital signal processing systems. Building on conventions and primitives proposed by Denyer and Renshaw, a simple subsystem was described in ADA and then tested with a small simulator also written in ADA.

Computer simulation of a control system is a valuable tool in design or performance evaluation. This is especially true when non-linear elements cannot be ignored and must be included within the model. A developmental Prolog language interpreter is constructed in the C programming language. The data type format is a subset of that of the Project Aquarius Prolog Engine proposed and under development at the University of California, Berkley. The design of the Prolog interpreter is part of an investigation at UCF in design of expert system architecture for real time applications. Prolog is a symbolic logic language presently emerging among numerous expert system designs. The architecture for a microsequenced Prolog machine (UPM) capable of providing the basic language features to a host computer is proposed. The Prolog machine functions are portioned into three processor components – Input/Output, Memory, and Central (CPU), where the design of the Central Processor is emphasized. Detailed discussion outlines the CPU facilities used to implement the forward-chaining and backtracking functions for the UPM. A probability density function is developed for the phase of light that is the result of adding a signal to noise with K-distributed amplitude and uniform phase. The probability density function of the phase associated with the I-K distribution is also developed. In the process of deriving the probability density function of the phase much I as learned about the relationships between different probability density functions. Three different methods of deriving homodyned K statistics are shown to be equivalent. Two different methods of deriving I-K statistics are shown to be equivalent. Quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and minimum shift keying (MSK) are the two most used M-ary modulation techniques in Direct-Sequence (DS) Spread Spectrum Communication systems. This thesis introduces a new modulation technique that can compete well with QPSK and MSK in many applications. This new modulation technique, made up of a superposition of one QPSK signal and two amplitude weighted QPSK signals, is called Amplitude Weighted Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (AWQPSK). It is found to have the same probability of error as QPSK and MSK techniques. It has a higher bandwidth efficiency in bits/sec/Hz than QPSK and MSK. It has …

This research report reviews the basics of pulse code modulation (PCM) techniques and includes a special encoder design for a system which uses a laser diode output for the transmitted pulse. The text discusses PCM and its features, PCM formats, synchronization, and various accepted PCM codes. The encode circuit design is complete with a description of the circuit, circuit components, and operation. Included are the necessary diagrams, figures, specifications, and parts list. The transmitted output of the design circuit has a repetition rate of one megabit per second.

The classic problem of achieving high Q, band pass, inductorless filters has been traditionally attacked by applying active RC networks. This approach suffers from the faults of poor economy, lack of stability of performance with time and temperature, and high network performance sensitivity to component changes. The problem is reviewed from the aspect of applying techniques other than operational amplifier RC filters. The techniques presented are those of N-Path (switching) and Digital Filters.
