Preferences For The Ideal Classroom Environment: A Comparison Between Gifted And Nongifted Students, John R. Adams

Doctoral Dissertations

Two major questions were addressed in this study: 1) What is the ideal classroom environment most preferred by students in a gifted and talented program?, and 2) Do preferences for the ideal classroom environment differ between students enrolled in a gifted and talented program and a comparison group of nongifted students?

The subjects were 147 eighth grade students selected from three middle schools in a large suburban school system. Seventy-three subjects were actively enrolled in a gifted and talented program, with the remaining 74 students randomly selected from the general population for comparison purposes. The Experimental data were to provide sufficient information to reveal the differences in self-actualization, anxiety, body-cathexis and behavioral progress through the overall rehabilitation program, between a treatment and a control group.

In August of 1975, 11 patients at the drug unit received a lecture and demonstration of Integral Hatha Yoga. Eight of the patients agreed to take part in the study and …

In Being, Richard Hal Rosen Dec 1975

In Being, Richard Hal Rosen

Doctoral Dissertations

This work, In Being, is an effort to establish the validity of individual thought. Personal thought (Chapter I) is elevated to the realm of objective knowledge while the knower is free from bias and preconception and aims at universals. The detached observer in science is questioned as personal knowing makes that which is known a part of the knower. Yoga, chemicals and phenomenology are explored as means for knowing and ultimate reality. Chapter I concludes with a delineation of the creative and intuitive implications for personal knowledge.

In the personal writing section (Chapter II), signs are discussed as they …

Lecture Instruction Versus A Personalozed System Of Instruction: Effects On Individuals With Differing Achievement Anxiety And Academic Achievement, Edward Joseph Jacko

Doctoral Dissertations

A relatively new instructional technique called the Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) has been highly praised by both instructors and students as a development in higher education which promises better student performance, higher morale, greater teacher effectiveness, and sometimes reduced cost of instruction. Studies of PSI conducted by others have been concerned, for the most part, with course examination scores and course grades in a variety of content, fact-oriented courses including psychology, engineering, library science, and physics.

An important issue which has not been investigated is the comparative effectiveness of the PSI method and the lecture method of instruction with …

The Comparative Utility Of Structured Lessons, Group And Individually Contingent Events, And Conditioned Reinforcers In Modifying Classroom Behaviors, James D. Long

Doctoral Dissertations

A major purpose of the study was to assess the relative merits of group versus individually contingent consequences in modifying the classroom behavior of adolescents, Other major purposes were to determine whether student conduct would improve with the implementation of structured lessons and to ascertain whether improvements would occur with the awarding of points as a consequence for appropriate behavior without the use of backup reinforcers.

Eight students in an inner-city seventh grade classroom of 32 blacks served as the subjects. They were selected by the teacher as the most disruptive students who were in regular attendance. The eight subjects …
