The purpose of this study was two-fold. The first objective was to review research done in the area of auditory discrimination to discover how auditory discrimination is related to reading, its importance to reading and whether or not it merits the time required for developing auditory discrimination skills. The second objective was to formulate a collection of games and activities for developing skills in the auditory discrimination of consonants and consonant blends, and present them to a class of first grade children to see if they would aid in developing the required skills. This study is undertaken to determine the impact of remedial language arts instruction on the language skills of slow learning fifth and sixth graders. It will seek to determine whether slow learning fifth and sixth graders, receiving remedial instruction in the language arts, will achieve as well as, or better than, slow learning fifth and sixth grade students in a regular heterogeneous classroom situation.
