Model Provisions For Building A Successful Lead Poisoning Prevention Program: A Case Study For The Western United States, Kathleen Lauckner
Model Provisions For Building A Successful Lead Poisoning Prevention Program: A Case Study For The Western United States, Kathleen Lauckner
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
It has been 236 years since Benjamin Franklin voiced his concerns about lead poisoning from the occupational exposures in his printing shop, yet, in 2012 childhood lead poisonings and adult occupational exposures are still serious public health issues in the United States. Lead poisoning is a 100% preventable affliction if the ingestion or inhalation of lead from environmental exposures can be avoided.
The quality of blood lead detection methods and brain function studies have improved dramatically over the last few decades and far more is now known about the adverse health effects from low level (microgram- µg) exposures to lead. …

Into The Tangled Web: K-12 Educators, Free Speech Rights, And Social Media, John David Andrews
Theses and Dissertations
Much attention has recently been given to K-12 educators and their use of social media. This quantitative study surveyed a targeted sample (n = 543) of known social media users to learn about K-12 educators’ use of social media, their legal knowledge of the First Amendment as it relates to free speech and education, and their dispositions toward the First Amendment. Survey respondents self-reported levels of social media use, completed a legal knowledge section, and responded to a series of items used to gauge their disposition toward the First Amendment. These were analyzed through various demographic and contextual factors in …

In Bed With The Fed: The Battle Over K-12 Sex Education In The United States, Hannah Frey Lauber
CMC Senior Theses
Sexuality education continues to be an extremely emotional and polarizing issue in the United States. The U.S. leads developed countries with the highest rates of teenage pregnancy and STI acquisition, as well as teenage abortions. Additionally, costs to society are tremendous—experts estimate unplanned pregnancy costs the federal government up to $12 billion annually. Now more than ever, there is a dire need for medically accurate, high-quality sex education in this country. This thesis explores the history of sexuality education policy in the United States, as well as recent legal developments. It highlights the arguments of those in favor of comprehensive …

Grading And Reporting Purposes And Practices In Catholic Secondary Schools And Grades' Efficacy In Accurately Communicating Student Learning, Peter Imperial
Doctoral Dissertations
Few aspects of school are as controversial as the practice of grading, for grades affect students' educational opportunities. The purpose of this study was to identify the practices Catholic high-school teachers employed in determining students' grades. The study investigated the extent to which academic achievement comprised the grades teachers reported, and the extent to which teachers' practices are consistent with their expressed purposes for grading. The study also explored the extent to which Catholic teachers' grading practices are consistent with their schools' purpose for grading. Using random sampling, 486 Catholic secondary school teachers and 50 administrators from 33 high schools …
Florida's Adolescent Literacy Policy: An Alternative Reading And Response, Diane Kroeger
Florida's Adolescent Literacy Policy: An Alternative Reading And Response, Diane Kroeger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this qualitative case study, I constructed interpretations of the meanings conveyed by state-level discourse communities as they were manifested in the primary and secondary speech genres of Florida’s adolescent literacy policy. Meanings (or values, beliefs and feelings) are highly tacit understandings embedded in the language, actions and objects of policy (Yanow, 2000), and are conveyed through informal and formal speech (Bakhtin, 1986). Results revealed (a) state policy meanings convey multiple versions of literacy with a heavy focus on receptive aspects of literate practice; (b) a typology of students and their fit within the institutional system; and (c) an emphasis …

The Role Of Program Evaluations In Improving And Sustaining State-Supported School Counseling Programs: A Cross Case Analysis Of Best Practices, Ian Monteg Martin
Open Access Dissertations
Recent work has shown that many state supported school counseling programs have not developed working statewide program evaluation schemas. This study examined two exemplary examples of state level program evaluation. Mixed-method case studies were created and then analyzed across cases to reveal common themes and best practices. The findings indicated that these cases were able to build statewide evaluation capacity within very different contexts.
Policy Options To Finance Public Higher Education In Afghanistan, Frank Mcnernery
Policy Options To Finance Public Higher Education In Afghanistan, Frank Mcnernery
Open Access Dissertations
While recovering from decades of conflict and trying to adjust to an incipient free market economy, public higher education in Afghanistan is currently confronted with rapidly increasing enrollment and inadequate government financing. The imbalance between high demand for and insufficient supply of higher education has led to a decrease in the quality of education and an urgent need to develop non-state sources of funding. Using Johnstone’s (1986) diversified funding model as the conceptual framework, this exploratory case study reports actors’ attitudes and perceptions of the financing policy options for Afghan public higher education and the impediments to introduce this model …
Safety Changes In Blue Ribbon Schools Since The Attack On Columbine High School, Joseph Gust
Safety Changes In Blue Ribbon Schools Since The Attack On Columbine High School, Joseph Gust
Dissertations
Measuring school success using a variety of tools is commonplace in America.
For many years, one standard measurement of a school's success was The Blue Ribbon Award from 1982 through 2002. This award quantified success based on schools achieving successful outcomes in a variety of areas with specific criteria.
Blue Ribbon award winning schools are exceptional by Department of Education
standards. They are not exempt from school violence and the issues that plague other
schools. Academic success and awards do not prepare a school for the situation that
occurred at Columbine.
The participants I interviewed were Principals or Designees at …

Culturally Responsive Professional Development Through Conceptual Change; A Case Study Of Substitute Teachers In Urban School Districts, Frank J. Feola
ETD Archive
The purposes of this research were to analyze the influence of participants' experiences on their culturally responsive pedagogical development and consider the policy implications for higher education, schools and school districts, and the state. Four substitute teachers from three urban school districts participated in a professional development experience--autodidactic cultural diversity development--to learn about culturally responsive pedagogy and implement it in their classrooms. Participants' upbringing, collegiate experiences, substitute teaching experiences, and the professional development influenced their development as culturally responsive educators. This research may also be used to inform policy discussions regarding the value and applicability of the substitute teaching experience …
A Research Based District Wide Discpline Policy, From Goal To Approval, Timothy Craig Morello
A Research Based District Wide Discpline Policy, From Goal To Approval, Timothy Craig Morello
All Graduate Projects
In the late 1990's the Wenatchee School District realized that the community and staff were dissatisfied with the state of discipline in the district. The schools, as is the case in the community at large, could no longer rely on traditional approaches to dealing with a growing number of incidents of anti-social behavior. A lack of discipline appeared to be at the root of the problem in the home and subordinately the root of the problem in the schools (McEvoy & Welker, 2000). In addition, disciplinary practices in many schools are inconsistent and ineitable (Skiba & Peterson, 2000). The District …

An Administrative Plan For Extension Library Service In Utah, Dana Andrew Samples
An Administrative Plan For Extension Library Service In Utah, Dana Andrew Samples
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
A free society that is information oriented and technologically complex requires a well informed, highly educate citizenry. The constant growth of knowledge further means that this educative process be a continuous, life-long endeavor. No longer can education be thought of as an entry point; instead, it must represent a constant evolutionary process throughout life.
A few universities long ago recognized the off campus extension of higher education as a legitimate public service responsibility. New York in 1891 and Wisconsin in 1906 made provision for extending the scope of the university to embrace a full range of adult educational needs and …
