East Germany And Its Unheard Of Skeletons In The Closet- Generational Trauma And Sexualized Violence In The Gdr, Nadine Bravo
Thinking Matters Symposium
This presentation attempts to address the impact of generational trauma, sexualized violence and abuse in family systems and institutions, and its expression/suppression in the Totalitarian East German regime from an auto ethnographic perspective as a trauma survivor. I will highlight historical aspects as well as what it was like to grow up in East Germany under those conditions. Generational trauma and sexualized violence are not an East German phenomenon but a cross-cultural phenomenon, used as a tool of control and demoralization of a culture during war. Refugees and immigrants often are trauma survivors. By addressing trauma, identity healing and/or formation …

Educator Wellbeing During Covid-19: Caregivers Vs. Non-Caregivers, Elizabeth Larsen, Judy Gagnon, Yana Davis, Nicole Hudson
Thinking Matters Symposium
The phenomenon of the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed the format of public education, putting stress on the educational system and its teachers. This research study aims to understand the impact of COVID-19 on the role of teachers in Maine, specifically focusing on the added responsibility that parents may experience while simultaneously meeting professional obligations. Researchers posed the question: “What is the relationship between caregiving responsibilities and emotional wellbeing of teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic among public school teachers in Maine?” Participants from K-12 public schools around the state were recruited through direct contact or via building administrators who distributed …

The Influence Of Social-Emotional Learning In High School Advisory Programs On Student Engagement And Success, Christina Louise O'Neal Phd
The Influence Of Social-Emotional Learning In High School Advisory Programs On Student Engagement And Success, Christina Louise O'Neal Phd
Muskie School Dissertations
Social-emotional learning (SEL) can help decrease negative outcomes and improve positive outcomes for high school youth, and student advisory time can be one effective mechanism in which to do so, especially for females and students of lower socioeconomic status (SES). This study explored the ways in which SEL is included in high school advisories and how this in turn influences teacher-student (T-S) relationships, student engagement, and student perceptions of academic achievement, as well as associations with SES and gender. Data were also gathered to learn more about the functioning of advisory in the remote environment. The study utilized a convergent …

Equity 911: Framing Educational Equity As A National Emergency, Larissa Malone Phd
Equity 911: Framing Educational Equity As A National Emergency, Larissa Malone Phd
Faculty Publications
This paper considers equity as a crisis faced in classrooms across America. As such, an emergency framework is utilized to propose an approach that is apropos to the intense urgency a crisis requires. Using the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Planning Frameworks and their guiding principles, a survey of equity topics is discussed. In doing so, it is concluded that the level of inequity currently allowed in the field of education must be honestly assessed and a comprehensive plan that engages multiple stakeholders must be put in place for justice to be fully realized.

4-H Youth Leaders: Acquisition Of Leadership Skills Based On Perceived Influence, Cathy Bartlett Gray Ma
All Student Scholarship
This study focuses on youth perceptions of influence on others and leadership skills they may seek to acquire, particularly within the Maine 4-H program. Understanding the relationship between the youth perception of leadership influence and the skills they seek to acquire will enable 4-H club leaders and adult mentors to better facilitate acquisition of leadership skills. This study gains understanding from the perspective of current teen leaders in the Maine 4-H program through the use of personal interviews with active teen leaders. Findings indicate that Maine 4-H Teen Leaders do not necessarily recognize the influence they have with their peers …
