Teaching And Learning Issues In The Multicultural Classroom, Mieke Witsel May 2009

Teaching And Learning Issues In The Multicultural Classroom, Mieke Witsel

Mieke Witsel

As the Western educational system becomes more geared to multicultural society, and a need to find funding outside the usual paddock of local students and research projects emerges, more pressure is being exerted on tertiary institutions to open their doors to foreign students. This paper explores the intercultural communication issues facing the lecturer teaching in the multicultural classroom. The original research draws on studies of Dutch lecturers and ancillary staff upon teaching (in English) within the multicultural tertiary classroom, in locations across the Netherlands, Belgium and Indonesia. However, additional findings emerged which allow for an interpretation of the impact of …

Sustaining Social Networks In Education, Pru Mitchell May 2009

Sustaining Social Networks In Education, Pru Mitchell

Pru Mitchell

This paper draws on experience in innovation projects at Education.au in the past two years considering how social networking might enhance professional learning for educators. The resulting service (me.edu.au) aims to put the individual rather than the institution at the centre of learning, and to provide individual educators with support as they step into Web 2.0. While professional learning and collaborative knowledge construction are desirable goals of professional social networking, this case study outlines challenges faced through the Innovate – Collaborate – Sustain phases of such projects. It provides an evaluation of Education.au’s online professional networking project using the 5-stage …

Exploring The Teaching Mind: Extending Participation In Lifelong Learning Through Engagement With A Supportive Community, Jeremy Szteiter

Jeremy Szteiter

This paper extends the notion of lifelong learning beyond gaining knowledge over a lifetime to preparing oneself to teach what has been learned to others. The "Teaching Mind," as I define the idea, involves thinking about what has been learned and what one knows by reconsidering that knowledge through the eyes of self as a teacher. The Teaching Mind assumes a broad notion of teaching that relates to informal and community learning across all areas of life and culture, beyond professional teaching in formal schools. The pursuit of the Teaching Mind is highly accessible to all those who wish to …

Elementos Endógenos Como Fatores Do Desenvolvimento Local Das Cidades: Uma Reflexão Sobre O Município De Piraquara/Pr, Jorge Amaro Bastos Alves

Jorge Amaro Bastos Alves

Variance In Performance Between Students Within Schools And Between Schools, Petra Lietz Apr 2009

Variance In Performance Between Students Within Schools And Between Schools, Petra Lietz

Dr Petra Lietz

One of the aims of the national agenda for education is to foster the achievement of Australian students in key learning areas such as numeracy and literacy. A central question, in this context, is at which level resources should best be allocated in order to maximize their effect on improving learning outcomes. Put differently, the question is whether it is more effective to direct resources to schools, their staff and infrastructure or to students and their families. To address this question, the South Australian Department of Education and Children Services (DECS) commissioned the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) in …

Get Real With Wikis – A Great Way To Encourage Collaboration, Paula Jones

Paula Jones

Wikis are not new – but some instructors or trainers don’t always use them effectively to support learning through collaborative efforts. It could be because they don't see the value or the need of a Wiki, or it could be they don’t know the technology and therefore ignore it. So there is a need to clarify what a Wiki is and what it is not. Then instructors and trainers can begin to utilize Wikis more effectively to support learning through collaborative efforts. Participants in this session will get a foundation in the use of Wikis to support collaborative learning in …

Contested Heritage In The Ancient City Of Peace, William Feighery

William Feighery

Gender Mainstreaming In Social Protection By Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel

Professor Vibhuti Patel

Gender mainstreaming has become a buzzword in development discourse in the 21st century. The volume under review is a timely publication in the context of the ever increasing pauperisation and immiserisation of millions of people, especially women and children. Naila Kabeer has performed a daunting task in examining the effect of economic globalisation on gender relations for a large majority of the poor around the world and the affirmative actions taken by the nation states.

Teacher Education Courses In Victoria: Perceptions Of Their Effectiveness And Factors Affecting Their Impact, Lawrence Ingvarson, Adrian Beavis, Elizabeth Kleinhenz

Dr Lawrence Ingvarson (Consultant)

Investment in teacher education is a major strategy to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in our schools. Agencies, such as the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), with responsibility for the accreditation of teacher education, can use feedback about the effectiveness of different modes of teacher preparation to support providers. It is vital that data for this purpose be valid and reliable. The Future Teachers Project (FTP) was designed to collect such data. It was designed to address two major questions: What are the perceptions of stakeholders (beginning teachers and their employers) about the effectiveness of current teacher education …

Dr Lawrence Ingvarson (Consultant)

After extensive national consultation the recent Review of Teaching and Teacher Education announced an agenda for action in its report 'Australia's Teachers: Australia's Future. One of its central themes was a call to revitalise the teaching profession. In this vein, the purpose of this paper is to provide a brief review of preliminary work at ACER, conducted in collaboration with the Australian Science Teachers' Association, to develop a standards-guided professional learning system that would lead to professional certification for highly accomplished teachers of science. This paper describes ASTA 's progress towards developing a system of certification, beginning with the development …

Getting Professional Development Right, Lawrence Ingvarson

Dr Lawrence Ingvarson (Consultant)

This paper examines the Western Australian Getting it Right reform as a strategy for professional learning and compares it with research on the characteristics of effective PD. The Getting it Right Strategy is clearly a comprehensive and well-resourced reform strategy with its main emphasis on building professional capacity among teachers and principals. The data we gathered as part of the evaluation, through school and classroom observations, interviews and surveys, left us in no doubt that the strategy was highly regarded by teachers and principals and was having a significant impact on practice. This paper will focus mainly on GiR work …
