Bibles, Ballots, And Bills: Political Resistance To Parochial Education In 1870s Ohio, James Gutowski
2018 Faculty Bibliography
The post-Civil War era opened a new chapter in the development of Catholic education in the United States. Seeking ways to forge stronger bonds of national unity, the Republican Party placed a high priority on public education as a means of forging a common American culture. Subsequently, members of the party viewed the growing number of Catholic schools, which offered an alternative to the public system, as a threat. The disproportionate growth of the Catholic population in Ohio alarmed the Republican Party, then holding many local and statewide offices. These officials sought to create legal and legislative barriers to hinder …
Becoming An International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program: Perspectives Of Teachers, Students, And Administrators., Mark Storz
2018 Faculty Bibliography
As an urban middle school begins to implement the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program, this study explores the process of experiencing a curricular change from the perspective of the teachers and students themselves. Through the use of a mixed methods approach, key administrators, teachers, and students were interviewed in the first year of implementation. During the second year, teachers were surveyed as a means of tracking the change over time that teachers may have been experiencing. Themes emerged in the areas of instructional practice, professional experiences, and student experiences. Most interestingly and not expected was a theme related to whether …

The Hindenburg Disaster: Combining Physics And History In The Laboratory, Gregory A. Dilisi
2017 Faculty Bibliography
We present the Hindenburg disaster as a case study in the flammability of fabrics. Our goal is to examine the ship’s outer covering and decide whether or not it was the fire’s initial source of fuel. To accomplish this, we piloted a basic vertical flame test with students in an introductory-level undergraduate laboratory. Our test is patterned after the protocol set forth by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) for determining the flammability of textiles. The case study provides several unique teaching opportunities

“Build A School, Rebuild A City” An Economic Examination Of The Re-Structured Education System In New Orleans, 10 Years After Hurricane Katrina, Brianna Lazarchik
“Build A School, Rebuild A City” An Economic Examination Of The Re-Structured Education System In New Orleans, 10 Years After Hurricane Katrina, Brianna Lazarchik
Senior Honors Projects
The city could have died. But it didn’t. Though the damage to the city of New Orleans in 2005 was devastating in ways that shocked the nation ten years ago, its culture and people are alive and thriving today. The depth of passion in New Orleans motivated and inspired individuals to move back to the city quickly and restore its glory. However, such rapid restoration is not without vast socioeconomic challenges. Education is a vital component of any thriving social system, and the education system in New Orleans has rebuilt itself in a unique way: largely through charter schools. This …
Indicators For The Number Of Females Choosing Stem Majors, Olga Graves
Indicators For The Number Of Females Choosing Stem Majors, Olga Graves
Senior Honors Projects
This paper explores the different variables which may motivate females to choose STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) majors. Historically, women have been greatly underrepresented in STEM fields for a number of different cultural and economic reasons. However, in order to fully compete in the global economy, the United States must find a way to bolster female participation in these fields. The motivators chosen to explore in this paper are: female faculty numbers, federal financial obligations, early concentration in math, SAT math scores, appropriations through the Women’s Educational Equity Act, average salary for STEM occupations, and female unemployment rates. The …

Factors Implicating Sense Of Belonging At A Hispanic-Serving Institution, Gloria S. Vaquera, Ricardo Maestas, Linda Munoz Zehr
Sociology
This study examines factors that impact students' sense of belonging at a Hispanic-serving institution. Findings indicate that various variables measuring academic and social integration as well as experiences with and perceptions of diversity have a positive impact on sense of belonging. Implications support the idea that campus diversity may improve sense of belonging and ultimately improve retention of all students. Implications and recommendations are discussed.

Learning The Art Of Instructional Conversation: The Influence Of Self-Assessment On Teachers' Instructional Discourse In A Reading Clinic, Kathleen A. Roskos, Sophie Boehlen, Barbara J. Walker
Education
Over 2 decades of sociolinguistic research describe the teacher's powerful role in creating the communication system that supports students' learning. Yet research evidence about how to prepare and develop professionals for this role beyond their natural discourse tendencies and style remains sparse. This study examined self-assessment as a means of teacher learning that develops teachers' understanding and use of discourse strategies that support instructional conversation. Using a discourse analysis tool and related procedures (transcription, analysis, and interpretation), 9 teachers examined the conceptual and social functions of their talk from videotaped excerpts of tutorial instruction over 5 weeks. Although the teachers' …
Two Beginning Kindergarten Teachers Planning For Integrated Literacy Instruction, Kathleen A. Roskos, Susan B. Neuman
Two Beginning Kindergarten Teachers Planning For Integrated Literacy Instruction, Kathleen A. Roskos, Susan B. Neuman
Education
This study reports the characteristics and strategies of 2 beginning kindergarten teachers' planning for an integrated approach to literacy instruction. Using ethnographic observational and analytic techniques, we describe features and structures of integrated instruction as a planning ''problem.'' The teachers' problem-solving strategies under the conditions of this task are also examined. Results revealed the multiple and complex nature of integrated instruction as a planning problem. Based on domain and componential analyses, the task appeared to include at least 6 kinds of planning activity and to make multiple demands on the planners' time, specificity of planning, level of pedagogical knowledge, and …
Landing The Job: A Survey Of New Teachers, Amy R. Hoffman
Landing The Job: A Survey Of New Teachers, Amy R. Hoffman
Education
A survey of recent graduates who successfully landed teaching positions was conducted to provide practical information for future teachers and the university personnel and faculty who may assist them with this process. The survey yielded insight as to the format and content of the interview and other factors which school district personnel may examine when making their decisions. The new teachers perceived that individual matters, such as gender or timing, and personality characteristics, such as enthusiasm or honesty, were probable reasons for landing their job as often as were factors relating to their teaching skills and knowledge. Innovative aspects of …
