A summary of a year-long analysis campus-wide at the University of Kentucky by the Committee for Research and Analysis on the Success of African American Students was presented to the Deans Council and Faculty Senate Council in Fall 2006. The report is the result of five separate research projects designed to help the UK leadership better understand the African American experience on campus and the correlates of success. This study compared third-grade reading achievement of urban African-American, Title I students using a basal reading series with those using a balanced literacy program to determine whether the highly structured skills-based methods advocated by The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act actually foster or impede reading achievement in an urban school setting.
Two hundred forty-five third-grade African-American, Title I students from an urban elementary school in southeastern Virginia served as subjects for the study. African-American Students’ Performance And Secondary School Size In The State Of Texas, John R. Slate, Craig H. Jones

The relationship between school size and academic achievement of African-American secondary school students was examined. Data were drawn from the Texas Academic Excellence Indicator System for 1998, 1999, and 2000. Results showed greater academic achievement for AfricanAmerican students from large schools than for African-American students at medium and small schools. These findings were most consistent on nationally standardized tests. Results were least consistent for state wide tests and for end of course grades, but all differences found favored large schools. Higher attendance rates were found for students in small schools, but no differences were found for dropout or graduation rates. …
