Many students struggle with mental health issues, which can cause intense classroom behaviors, such as, physical aggression, verbal outburst, physical refusals, and elopements. These behaviors are creating stressful learning environments for both teachers and students. Teachers are looking for more strategies to help them manage their classroom and create a positive learning environment. One strategy that has become more present in recent years is mindfulness. This literature review examines research that has been conducted on mindfulness interventions and practices and explores the connection between mindfulness and mental health, as well as, how they both affect classroom behaviors.

This literature review explores the research of what makes a trauma-informed school and what interventions are effective in implementing trauma-informed teaching practices to help students with past traumatic experiences become more success in school. Research documents a large number of students who have experienced trauma and that this trauma has a significant impact on a child’s development, both cognitive and social. Teachers and schools are at the forefront of this problem and ideally suited to address this problem. This literature review revealed key areas to focus when implementing trauma-informed teaching practices. These include relationships, resiliency, and climate and culture.

This action research study investigated how formative data use influences teaching and learning, and what impact the formative process has on student outcomes. The study took place in a first-grade classroom with a group of five students over the course of four weeks. Participants were selected for the study because they scored in the 2nd to 11th percentile rank on the FastBridge Early Reading English assessment. Quantitative data was collected weekly for each of the four weeks using FastBridge Word Segmenting progress monitoring and then compared to baseline data taken before the study. The purpose of this action research project was to determine if research-based early literacy interventions are more effective than teacher-created early literacy interventions with special education students on letter identification and letter sound recognition. Before the interventions began the students were given the Foundational Skills Survey in Letter Identification and Letter Sound Recognition by Really Great Reading. This score was the baseline for the reported data. Teaching students social-emotional skills positively impacts the learning environment in a classroom. This school improvement plan establishes a school wide outline for the training and implementation of social-emotional instruction through Boys Town's Well-Managed Schools curriculum. The plan addresses the need for social-emotional intervention supports and resources for classroom teachers. A review of literature was conducted to support the plan and examines how student behaviors impact classroom learning, recognizes the importance of explicit social-emotional instruction, and delves into how social-emotional interventions improve the classroom learning environment.

This action research was driven by the researcher's interest in reading fluency and specifically about using a class-wide intervention to help increase students' words per minute using Varied Practice Reading. The researcher is a third-grade teacher in her 7th year of teaching, where her own students participated in the class-wide intervention. The five week intervention was conducted on the students' fluency to analyze the effectiveness of the class-wide Varied Practice Reading intervention. This action research study investigated the impact that social-emotional skills had on academic growth during the first 8 weeks of the 2020-2021 school year for a class of first grade students. Academic growth was evaluated by the students math gains measured by the STAR math assessment. The SAEBRS teacher assessment was used to measure the students social-emotional skills, specifically social, emotional, and academic behavior. The data did not indicate statistical significance, however, there is literature that suggests the importance of teaching social-emotional skills to young children to improve their social, emotional, and academic behavior and support their education and life.

This action research study investigates the relationship between culturally responsive teaching and the impact on student engagement. For six weeks, the researcher implemented culturally responsive teaching strategies in a virtual first-grade classroom. The participants included fourteen six- and seven-year-olds who attended public school in Northern Virginia. The instruction was completed in a virtual setting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the start and conclusion of the study, students were given a survey to measure the class climate. Student engagement was observed daily and documented on a weekly observation tally sheet. This literature review explores the importance of patterning in early math education. Patterning skills are a unique predictor of future success in mathematics. With the Common Core not addressing patterning as a standard in early math education, many educators have come to believe that the importance of patterning is not significant. However, past and present research studies have yielded convincing results that demonstrate the importance of including patterning in early math curriculums. Incorporating patterning into young students' math experiences requires several specific instructional strategies to optimize the benefits of learning patterning skills.

The purpose of this action research is to describe the effects of the application of daily growth mindset lessons upon the accuracy and level of work completion in math assessments. Participants included the researcher’s class of 13 third grade students from a small rural Midwest school district. Students participated in a daily growth mindset lesson intervention for a period of 4 weeks. Data was collected using math assessments and growth mindset surveys. The purpose of this action research project is to show that gains in literacy skills through implementation of guided reading practices at the preschool level, if successful, prove that guided reading instruction is a meaningful and purposeful practice in teaching literacy skills at the early childhood level. This action research study focused on first-year teachers who were assigned to teach in grades 6-12 at a suburban school district and were involved in a mandated new teacher mentor program. The researcher evaluated participants’ self-efficacy using the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) and a series of qualitative questions to determine if a first-year teacher’s self-efficacy changes during the first semester of their mentorship experiences and if each domain of a first-year teacher’s self-efficacy (student engagement, instructional strategies, or classroom management) changes during the first semester of their mentorship experience. Jean Ayre's sensory integration therapy intervention for students with an autism spectrum disorder, specifically as they are applied in the classroom. Ayres was an occupational therapist, educational psychologist, and an advocate for individuals with special needs. Data was collected that examined pretest and posttest results of high school students in grades 9-12. This ex-post facto research was conducted to identify preschool parents’ preferred method to utilize when communicating with their child’s teacher. It also was conducted to determine if the preferred method differed based on socioeconomic status. The researcher tracked the primary ways families chose to communicate most frequently by recording how many times emails, phone calls, handwritten notes, and texting through applications such as Remind, ClassDojo, and Facebook Messenger were sent by parents. Data analyzed through a Friedman Test, a Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and a Mann-Whitney U Test revealed parents significantly communicated more through texting applications.
