The On-Line Processing Of Aspectual Coercion : Some Psycholinguistic Considerations, Sacha Develle Dec 2005

The On-Line Processing Of Aspectual Coercion : Some Psycholinguistic Considerations, Sacha Develle

Dr Sacha DeVelle

There is much we do not understand about the relationship between linguistic expressions and their cognitive functions. The mechanisms that underlie aspectual coercion are no exception. Aspectual coercion describes the interpretive effects that follow the realignment of temporal semantic mismatches between the verb and an external modifier. It is assumed that the reinterpretation of sentential information is dependent upon an extra-linguistic process absent from surface level structure. Attempts to account for this effect have focused on the aspectual characteristics of the verb and how these features interact with temporal modifiers. Prominent among these is Jackendoff's enriched compositional hypothesis (1997, 2002, …

Icons As Ideology: A Media Construction, Judith (Judie) Cross Dec 2005

Icons As Ideology: A Media Construction, Judith (Judie) Cross

Judith (Judie) L Cross

Despite mass-produce images being predominantly two dimensional, readers usually perceive them three dimensionally. The direction, position and movement of visual elements, such as gaze, within image texts cue this perception, signifying particular relations within space-time. Readers often interpret these relations subconsciously, or at least without serious reflection on how particular image relations affect modality and meaning. Kress and van Leeuwen (1990, 1996) have initiated many readers of images into the significance of four directions in physical space, but the following paper focuses on the significance of the other two: background/foreground or in/out. I analyse a specific genre of visual text, …

The Sacred And The Secular In Clay's Quilt, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Dec 2005

The Sacred And The Secular In Clay's Quilt, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Charlie Sweet

n a telling scene toward the opening of Clay's Quilt (NY: Ballantine, 2001), Silas House has the novel's protagonist, Clay Sizemore, heading up Town Mountain toward the Hilltop Club, the local honkytonk. As he approaches the club, Clay notices that "across the bowl that held the town, another mountain rose up" (52). The most noticeable feature on this opposite mountain is a "marble statue of Jesus with his arms stretched out in front ... so lit up that it could be seen for miles" (52). Importantly, this scene acts as House's foreshadowing of the struggle Clay will endure as he …

The Mixed-Coefficients Multinomial Logit Model : A Generalized Form Of The Rasch Model, Ray Adams, Margaret Wu Dec 2005

The Mixed-Coefficients Multinomial Logit Model : A Generalized Form Of The Rasch Model, Ray Adams, Margaret Wu

Prof Ray Adams

Since Rasch's introduction of his item response models, there has been a proliferation of extensions and alternatives, each of which has a different name and different matching software package. The proliferation of models has, in some ways, been a hindrance to practitioners. This paper presents a generalised item response model that provides a unifying framework for a large class of Rasch-type models. The advantages of a single framework include mathematical elegance, generality in a single software package, and a facilitation of the development, testing, and comparison of new models. The unified model is a multidimensional item response model, the specification …

Effective Practice In Assessment, Gabrielle Matters Dec 2005

Effective Practice In Assessment, Gabrielle Matters

Dr Gabrielle Matters

Practising effective assessment means that educators need to be fully equipped and ready for action to deliver the goods. What are the goods in this case? For the author the answer is the very best evidence of the nature and quality of student learning so that teachers can get information to feed a higher goal. That higher goal is more and better learning for more and more students. What are the characteristics of a system that is fully equipped and ready for action? For the author the answer is quite simple: first and foremost, teachers possessing high-level assessment skills, contributing …

It’S Time To Study Values At The Core Of Food Technology Education (Presentation), Angela Turner, Kurt W. Seemann Dec 2005

It’S Time To Study Values At The Core Of Food Technology Education (Presentation), Angela Turner, Kurt W. Seemann

Dr Angela Turner

This paper seeks to explore the values of academic culture in the secondary teaching genre of food technology. Historically, education providers have displayed a traditional syllabus design and interpretation of the food technology industry. This paper argues that the NSW Food Technology Syllabi has largely been a re-badging of the former home economics/domestic science curriculum and warrants a new perspective. New societal values have influenced innovation in food products, from valuing indigenous bush harvest, links between naturopathy and food, and strengthening values that link eco-sustainability with synthetic foods. These new developments present a compelling case to rethink the future and …

Improving Science Learning, John Ainley Dec 2005

Improving Science Learning, John Ainley

Dr John Ainley

Science education experts, at a 2006 ACER conference 'Boosting Science Learning: What Will It Take?', concluded with a session which developed a three-point proposal for science education. The endorsed proposal stated that: (1) Australia needs to re-imagine science education, accepting that a shift is occurring, and must occur, in the way in which we think of its nature and purposes; (2) to achieve this re-imagined science education we need to develop a new metaphor for science education that will capture its nature, and rigorous assessment processes appropriate to this re-imagined science education; (3) there needs to be a national teacher …
