The desire to create automatons is a familiar theme in human history, and during the age of the Enlightenment mechanical automatons became not only an “emblem of the cosmos”, but a symbol of man’s confidence that he would unlock nature’s greatest mysteries and fully harness her power. And yet only a century later, automatons had begun to represent human repression and servitude, a theme later picked up by writers of science fiction. Open Culture At The Heart Of The University: Libraries As Multicommons, Anna K. Gold

Anna K. Gold

The university library can be reconceptualized as a powerful engine for open culture. A generative and regenerative center that naturally brings disciplines, cultures, and generations together, the university library can expand its role in open culture far beyond sharing institutionally-produced research and data through open repositories. Drawing on the experience of a public polytechnic university, this presentation documents the emergence of a university library as a system of open culture programs and as a place where a speeding culture can stop to dialogue, think, and create: generating collective interactive learning; fostering collaboration with open data; cultivating open conversations and learning …

School Year And Summer Enrichment Programs, Liz Nusken

Ohio College Access Network

References to 21st Century Learning Skills (integral to creating college- and career-ready graduates) litter the current landscape – educationally, legislatively, and in the media. Yet, the traditional school day is finite in length and the competition for the minutes it contains, intense. This PPT presentation slide deck accompanied the webinar by the same title that addressed those skills which might be most effectively developed outside of the classroom and will increase the participants’ awareness of exemplar school year and summer enrichment opportunities (both in central Ohio, statewide and throughout the country) that may, in turn, be communicated to the students …

Source Text Re-Use In Engineering Thesis And Dissertation Literature Reviews: A Comparison [Powerpoint Presentation], Edward J. Eckel Mr.

Edward J Eckel

Using random samples of 150 engineering master's theses and 150 doctoral dissertations from the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database, the author conducted 30 Google searches of random seven word strings from the literature review sections for each thesis/dissertation, looking for textual matches to scholarly sources. The author then did a statistical comparison for significance between the thesis and dissertation data for the following measures: length of the longest verbatim string found for each thesis/dissertation, and the number of verbatim matches found for each thesis/dissertation. This study is designed to explore the following research question: Do engineering master's theses have more …

Mobile Modeling: Using And Creating Ipad And Ipod Apps To Shape Students With Disabilities, Amanda J. Rockinson-Szapkiw, Justin M. Tucker, Carolyn Wicks

Amanda J. Rockinson-Szapkiw

Modeling is a technique that is often used to teach new skills to students with disabilities. Modeling is effective for teaching communication, social, and functional living skills to students with emotional, behavioral, and cognitive disorders (Werts, Caldwell, & Wolery, 1996). Video modeling and audio prompts can be as effective as live modeling (Murzynski & Bourret, 2007; Rehfeldt, Dahman, Young, Cherry, & Davis, 2003). In fact, some researchers have suggested that video modeling results in more rapid acquisition of skills than live modeling and may even be more generalizable across environments (Charlop & Milstein ,1989). With the introduction of mobile devises, …

Barbara Glackin

Albertsons Library at Boise State University has been slow to move into the ebook arena for a variety of reasons including the inadequacies of simultaneous user models and the uncertainty of ebook technology. However, the most significant question for BSU has been usefulness of ebooks to their patrons. Are ebooks a passing fad or are they the answer to improved access to information? In January 2006, BSU selected a small group of technical books in an electronic format via the ProQuest Safari Tech Books Online database. This session will discuss the rational behind selecting technical books as an introduction to …
