Western Science And Eastern Zen To Seek The Origin Of Truth: Philosophical Background Of Scale Modeling, Kozo Saito Mar 2024

Western Science And Eastern Zen To Seek The Origin Of Truth: Philosophical Background Of Scale Modeling, Kozo Saito

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

This article was written to introduce philosophical background of scale modeling, where Zen philosophy was applied to overcome the limitation of logical thinking and hypotheses-driven deductive science. Three specific reasons are as follows. The first is related to the law approach in scale modeling; it uses the kufu principle, originated in Zen Buddhism, together with the other three scientific methods: experimental, theoretical, and computational. The second reason is because scale modeling seeks relativistic understanding by attempting to realize similarity; the concept is closer to Eastern philosophy rather than absolute understanding cultivated by deductive science. The third is in the educational …

Collaborative Teaching To Impact: Embedding Wikipedia Editing In An Asian Studies Curriculum, Angie Chau, Ying Liu Feb 2024

Collaborative Teaching To Impact: Embedding Wikipedia Editing In An Asian Studies Curriculum, Angie Chau, Ying Liu

Journal of East Asian Libraries

The use of A.I. tools in learning and research introduces significant challenges to conventional essay assignments in Humanities, necessitating the exploration of alternative teaching and evaluation methods.

In many academic libraries, subject Librarians are often invited by instructors to teach one-shot library research skills workshops as guest speakers. The one-shot library instruction model is “not sufficient to convey the depth and breadth of information literacy concepts to students”, however, it remains in use “in part because of the sheer practicum of the model.”

In response to the identified need for change, the instructor and the librarian undertook a case study …

Asian Canadian Voices: Facets of Diversity is a compelling anthology that celebrates the contributions of Asian Canadians over two centuries. Edited by Hana Kim and presented by the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library, the book weaves together diverse stories, exploring themes of resilience, cultural pride, and evolving identity. The Missionary And The Pea: An Anthropological Study Of The French Mep Economy, Michel Chambon Feb 2024

The Missionary And The Pea: An Anthropological Study Of The French Mep Economy, Michel Chambon

Journal of Global Catholicism

This paper discusses how the French missionaries of the Missions Etrangères de Paris (MEP) are linking humans and material objects to support their religious agenda. Revisiting the long history of this organization in Hong Kong and Thailand, but also its distinct recruitment and assignment policies, I highlight how these Catholic missionaries rely on their French cultural background to interconnect people and goods. While theological principles and political pragmatism shape their functioning, I argue that their economy is distinctively rooted in the French notion of terroir –the taste of place— an embodied relation to land that acts as a cultural mechanism …

A Queer Chinese Pilgrimage: Encountering Catholic Life In Manila, George Wu Bayuga Feb 2024

A Queer Chinese Pilgrimage: Encountering Catholic Life In Manila, George Wu Bayuga

Journal of Global Catholicism

Starting in the late 1990s, Chinese Catholic priests, sisters, and seminarians began journeying to the Philippines to undergo religious and spiritual formation. This paper documents this journey and characterizes it as a kind of queer pilgrimage. Recognizing the queer theoretical parallels between minoritized populations under hegemony and Catholic life under socialism, this paper calls for attention to the queer work of imagining futures that emerges through processes of movement, encounter, and reflexivity across new political and social spaces. Specifically, this paper highlights how state-religious relations under socialism can differentially shape how Chinese Catholics think of themselves, faith formation, and how …

Interpreting "Shijia Buzu(室家不足)" In The Book Of Songs·Shaonan·Hang Lu Through The Lens Of Interchangeable Uses Of "Zu(足)" And "Shu(疋)", Zhensan Fang, Cheng Zhang Jan 2024

Interpreting "Shijia Buzu(室家不足)" In The Book Of Songs·Shaonan·Hang Lu Through The Lens Of Interchangeable Uses Of "Zu(足)" And "Shu(疋)", Zhensan Fang, Cheng Zhang

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

The characters "足" and "疋" have the same etymology and were occasionally used interchangeably. It was during the Warring States period that they began to be used separately. In Chapter "室家不足" of the Book of Songs, "室家" should be interpreted as "家庭," and "足" is equivalent to "疋," which is pronounced as "雅" and means "正." Therefore, "室家不足" refers to the illegitimacy of the family relationship.

A Comparative Analysis Of The Origin And Formation Between Chinese Characters And English Alphabets, Xuan Song Jan 2024

A Comparative Analysis Of The Origin And Formation Between Chinese Characters And English Alphabets, Xuan Song

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

This research is based on the framework of social constructivism, utilizing the principle of Human Universals as a methodology to compare the similarities and differences between the ideation and formation methods of Chinese characters and English alphabets. Through comparative analysis of the ideation of English letters (pictogramme) and the origin of Chinese characters, known as the "Six Categories Theory," we discover their alignment in terms of social, traditional, and cultural aspects. This suggests that different ethnic groups share common features in terms of life experience, learning cognitive development, and thinking habits. This study also finds that the origins of English …

Bringing Calligraphy Art Back To Writing – An Exploration Of Calligraphy Education For Chinese Beginners, Xin Zhang Jan 2024

Bringing Calligraphy Art Back To Writing – An Exploration Of Calligraphy Education For Chinese Beginners, Xin Zhang

Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology

Abstract: Chinese calligraphy, often recognized as an iconic representation of Asian culture, is widely regarded as a traditional art form with over thousands of years history. However, it is often overlooked that, at its core, calligraphy is a method of writing. In the process of learning about Asian art, culture, and character history through Chinese calligraphy, we can also introduce Chinese beginners to the art of writing Chinese characters. This integration of traditional Chinese calligraphy as a means of writing Chinese characters with language learning offers numerous advantages for novice learners. It engages their senses of sight, hearing, speech, and …

Signifying And The Feeling Of Differences, Samuel Weber Jan 2024

Signifying And The Feeling Of Differences, Samuel Weber

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

What does Werner Hamacher's concept of archiphilology have in common with Saussure's view of intralinguistic, differential function in language? Perhaps the way in which the indefinite of language itself “slowly defines itself,” both in response to past acts of appropriations, and appealing for new signifieds the meaning of which can only be seized and unseized over time. Several of Kafka's short stories illustrate how literary works play out the same tension within what can be called a “progressive and digressive” narrative, warding off any internal principle of closure or conclusiveness while continuing to require endings and answers. Holderlin's “Remarks on …

Recursive Documentary Design And An Awareness Of The Mechanism, Wayne Defremery Jan 2024

Recursive Documentary Design And An Awareness Of The Mechanism, Wayne Defremery

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This essay documents 3D-printed sculptures displayed at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the Document Academy. To raise awareness about the cultural significance of the mechanisms that produce digital substance, the sculptures lend material heft to some of the abstractions that help to constitute textual representations of a sixteenth-century Korean lyric and modern Korean poems from the early twentieth century in digital environments. The essay also describes previous exhibitions of the sculptures that utilized augmented reality technologies. By documenting the ways augmented reality technologies represented 3D-printed sculpture that documents digital texts that represent printed documents and manuscripts, the essay suggests how …

Between Pain And Glory: Memory Disputes Of The Brazilian Dictatorship In Retrato Calado And O Que É Isso, Companheiro?, Angela R. Mooney Jan 2024

Between Pain And Glory: Memory Disputes Of The Brazilian Dictatorship In Retrato Calado And O Que É Isso, Companheiro?, Angela R. Mooney

The Coastal Review: An Online Peer-reviewed Journal

This article analyzes Luiz Roberto Salinas Fortes’ Retrato calado (Silent Portrait) published in 1988, considering the theoretical discussions on testimonio's epistemology—addressing the challenge of narrating trauma and the risk of stylization. It compares Fortes' memoir with Fernando Gabeira's O que é isso, companheiro? (What's This, Comrade?) from 1979, examining diverse approaches to capturing historical trauma through literature and its impact on collective memory about Brazilian Dictatorship (1964-1985).

Learning Chinese Vocabulary: Understanding Students' Perspectives, Austin Gasiecki, Zuotang Zhang Jan 2024

Learning Chinese Vocabulary: Understanding Students' Perspectives, Austin Gasiecki, Zuotang Zhang

The Coastal Review: An Online Peer-reviewed Journal

This study used a survey to investigate self-study and university-enrolled Chinese learners’ habits in studying Chinese vocabulary in order to determine what study methods influence a.) learners’ confidence in learning Chinese vocabulary and b.) what aspects of Chinese vocabulary they consider easy or difficult. We were particularly interested in seeing what the data had to say about students’ attitudes towards characters and the written language, given that the field of Chinese language pedagogy is known for a stronger focus on the written language as opposed to the spoken language. We found that aspects of Chinese vocabulary associated with the spoken …

Critiquing The Discourse On Women In The Edo Era: Intertextual Studies Of Ariyoshi’S Hanaoka Seishū No Tsuma, Nina Alia Ariefa, Melani Budianta, Dhita Hapsarani

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

Under the Tokugawa clan, Japanese women’s position was declined throughout the Edo era (1603–1868). Almost one century afterwards, a female writer called Ariyoshi Sawako (1931–1984) raised the issue of female position in the Edo era through the novel Hanaoka Seishū no Tsuma (HSNT). This article will focus on two things. First is the exploration of the discourse of women in the Edo Era through three texts written during the era. The second part of the article will discuss the intertextuality of novel, with the discourse on women in the Edo era. New historicism method and Foucault’s concepts of discourse and …

Buddhist Music As A Contested Site: The Transmission Of Teochew Buddhist Music Between China And Singapore, Jie Zhang

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

In the Chaozhou City Gazetteer of Buddhism & Chaozhou Kaiyuan Monastery Gazetteer published in 1992, the then Abbot of the Kaiyuan Monastery, Shi Huiyuan 释慧原 heavily condemned the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) monk Shi Kesheng 释可声 (date unknown) for "starting the sins among laities in the Chaozhou region who dared transgressing (the Buddhist doctrines) and became chant leaders in a flaming mouth ceremony.” Why was the Abbot so upset with a fellow monk back in history? What did Kesheng do, and what were the implications of him starting this "transgression"? This article investigates the history of the international traffic of Buddhist …

“説”“語”結合與《世説新語》的文體學考察, Zhongsheng Wu Dec 2023

“説”“語”結合與《世説新語》的文體學考察, Zhongsheng Wu

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Ceaseless debates have been conducted over the stylistic features of A New Account of Tales of the World, which combines the characteristics of shuo 説 (telling) and yu 語 (language). In terms of shuo, A New Account of Tales of the World inherited the ingenuity of Confucian classics, the narrative character of historical writings, and the rhetoric of argumentative essays. Concerning yu, it has the characteristics of quotation, colloquialism, and conciseness. The combination of shuo and yu infused A New Account of Tales of the World with refreshing stylistic features such as sharp and witty speeches, …

Shulin Zhong Dec 2023

Shulin Zhong

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

This article reinvestigates the case of Zhong Hui slandering Ji Kang and discusses A New Account of Tales of the World’s unique compilation style and philosophy and its appreciation and representation of historical figures, which illustrate its stand-alone value different from that of Annals of the Three Kingdoms and Book of Jin. Previous research has argued that Zhong Hui’s slander was the direct cause of Ji Kang’s death and has drawn critiques to the former. This article reads the records about Zhong Hui in A New Account of Tales of the World with references to other classical …

Chunhong Wang Dec 2023

Chunhong Wang

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Chinese culture advances by drawing cultural resources from different regions at different times, which come together to constitute its totality. Scholars and officials in ancient times were both traditional and realistic: the former meaning that they were influenced by the scholarship of a certain region or school of thought; the latter referring to their responses to their immediate realities. In life’s twists and turns, the choices they made were necessarily linked to cultural lineage or reflected the influence of cultural ideas vividly, and their writings and behaviors were in sync with their knowledge structures, intellectual cultivations, and ideologies, especially …

Linfu Wang Dec 2023

Linfu Wang

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Red Sepals Collection of Lyrics 紅萼軒詞牌 is a delicate and practical literary book, but can also be used in a drinking game. This work reflects the thought of prosody of Confucian descendants like Kong Chuanduo and Kong Chuanzhi. The principle — lyrics are poems — lies at the heart of the Confucian descendants’ community’s thought of lyrics. Advocates like Kong Chuanduo emphasized the practical recitation of lyrics and opposed the prevalent trend of prosodic revival in the lyricists’ circles of their time. They achieved a regional uniqueness in setting the tunes for individual melodies by carefully considering the nuances …

Zhijia Wang Dec 2023

Zhijia Wang

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

In the pseudo-Confucian version of the Book of Documents 尚書, chapter introductions and titles are retained preceding the main text. The Shangshu Zhengyi 尚書正義, compiled during the Tang Dynasty, also encompasses explanations of these two elements. Since the combined compliation of commentaries and sub-commentaries in the Southern Song Dynasty, the overall layout of the combined versions of the Book of Documents has remained consistent. However, variations can be observed among different versions, particularly in the sequencing of chapter introductions, titles, and their corresponding explanatory texts. Scholars from the Qing dynasty, as well as the Shangshu Zhengyi Dingben 尚書正義定本 published …

Xiaotong Xu Dec 2023

Xiaotong Xu

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

When discussing the theories of structural analysis of Ming and Qing poetry, scholars have either focused on the progression from introduction to climax or the mutual influence between prose techniques and poetry structural analysis. However, the Song-dynasty influence of Zhu Xi’s method of analyzing poetry based on narrative, analogy, and association has been overlooked, even though it also serves as a significant source for structural analysis of poetry in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Although Ming scholars borrowed Zhu Xi’s model to annotate poetry and were criticized by the officials of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries
