Business-Sponsored Films For Physical Science, Bertha Elizabeth Slye Jan 1960

Business-Sponsored Films For Physical Science, Bertha Elizabeth Slye

Masters Theses

For many years business-sponsored films have been used widely in instruction in the science classroom. Because of the potential of the films in helping teachers bridge the gap between the fundamental teaching of scientific principles, and the applications found in the actual experiences of the student's consumer world, requests for them have often exceeded the output of those that are educationally sound. In the last decade in particular, the development of atomic and space technology, as well as the growing interest in science, have made it necessary to teach science beyond the confines of information in the ordinary science textbook. …

Recognizing that the value or the student teaching experience depends to a large extent on the quality and the quantity of the types of experiences provided during student teaching, and the supervision or the program, the writer has identified two major purposes of the study as follows:

The Problem and Its Background

The Place of World History in Secondary Education

The study of world history has great significance in our secondary schools. In an age of persistent world crisis, the importance of the skills, information, and powers of analysis that may be acquired through the study of world history is deemed essential by many educators. The fact of its presence in the curriculum is in itself evidence that world history is considered important. In the most recent survey available from the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare

The Problem and Its Background

The Scientific Movement in Education

It is a well-known fact that for several decades educators have been trying to place the educational profession on as scientific a basis as possible.1 One outgrowth of this effort has been the “educational measurement movement.” This movement has involved widespread attempts to use objective techniques in solving educational problems, objective measures in obtaining educational data, and to use the data thus obtained as a basis for organizing educational plans and procedures. The importance attached to this trend has led, in some cases, to an undue, and occasionally, distorted …

Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

Biology in the Secondary School Curriculum

There is ample evidence, both direct and tacit, that biology has justified its place in the curriculum of the secondary school.

Among the direct evidence is that stated by Heiss, Obourn, and Hoffman1 as follows:

"On the Senior High School level, general biology is well established as a tenth grade course and is usually offered as an elective for each of three years. There is a considerable body of evidence available that seems to indicate that both general science and biology are going a long way …
