Bringing Schools Closer Through Distance Learning, Shawna Paskert Jan 1998

Bringing Schools Closer Through Distance Learning, Shawna Paskert

Graduate Research Papers

Distance education takes place when a teacher and student are separated by physical distance, and technology is used to bridge the instructional gap. It is definitely a plus in a world that is constantly changing. For those who have lifestyles different than the average traditional student, distance education is the way to go. It is the more time-efficient way to handle a post-secondary education. Currently, and in the future, more students in secondary and elementary schools will be using the distance education settings than using the traditional classroom.

Integrating Writing Across The Curriculum Enables Special Needs Students To Become Writers, Gretchen Peterson-Kobriger Jan 1998

Integrating Writing Across The Curriculum Enables Special Needs Students To Become Writers, Gretchen Peterson-Kobriger

Graduate Research Papers

Elementary students with language and learning disabilities became independent writers and readers after the classroom instruction changed from a teacher directed, segmented, skill deficit approach which is typically found in special education classrooms to a classroom which embraced whole language philosophies and provided students with the necessary conditions for learning written language. This paper describes the specific changes in teaching philosophy, instructional practices, methods, and strategies which were implemented in my classroom. It demonstrates how individual student challenges were met which enabled the students to increase their self-esteem and awareness of themselves as writers.

Fostering Acceptance Of Disabled Persons By Appreciating Individual Differences, Allison R. Clausen

Graduate Research Papers

Although the federal law, Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 (Public Law 94-142), requires school districts to provide a free, appropriate, and public education to all children with disabilities between the ages of three and 21, studies have indicated a need for programs to develop more positive and accepting attitudes toward the handicapped. This can be accomplished by providing nondisabled children structured experiences with disabled children at an early age when their perceptions of individual differences are being formed.

This article discusses the educational experiences of Joey, a fifth grade student diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Joey is …

Emotional Quotient : Predicting And Teaching For Future Success Of Students, Denise A. Hale Jan 1998

Emotional Quotient : Predicting And Teaching For Future Success Of Students, Denise A. Hale

Graduate Research Papers

Emotional Quotient (EQ) involves virtually every aspect of a person's life and plays a more important role in predicting success for students than the traditional Intelligence Quotient (IQ). Emotional intelligence involves recognizing one's emotions, thus having a sense of self-awareness, managing and controlling one's emotions, motivating oneself to achieve a set goal, responding with empathy, and handling interpersonal relationships with appropriate social responses.

Many children today are deprived of natural opportunities to develop a healthy EQ. Through modeling and continued reinforcement starting in the early elementary grades, EQ can be taught. Teachers can provide literature experiences as the basis of …

Dress For Success: Can Uniforms Enhance Learning For The Middle School Child?, Steven E. Wymore

Graduate Research Papers

The hot topic of uniforms in public schools has been of great interest in recent years. Many believe uniforms can help the middle school child learn better. Some would use it to control violence and gang activities in schools. Others would use it to promote pride and academic achievement. Some say it would cut costs for needy families, and cut competition with clothing styles. Those who oppose school uniforms contend there is a lack of firm data to support a "fad" such as this with uniforms. Instead, dress codes should be enforced and maintained. Some people feel uniforms give a …

Instructional Technology In The School System, Sherri Sue Zanotti Jan 1998

Instructional Technology In The School System, Sherri Sue Zanotti

Graduate Research Papers

Analyses of the deployment of technology in schools have tended to note its failure to affect the daily values and practices of teachers and students. This absence is generally regarded as an implementation failure, or as resulting from some temperamental shortcoming on the part of the teachers or technologists. Such a construction is predicated on the assumption that the technology is value free and its implementation a struggling playing field. This paper proposes that no instructional technology is ever neutral. Its value and practices must support the organization into which it is placed. The failures of technology to look and …

Classroom Discussion: A Journey To Decentralizing The Classroom, Mike Suther Jan 1998

Classroom Discussion: A Journey To Decentralizing The Classroom, Mike Suther

Graduate Research Papers

Throughout history of the United States, teachers have instigated classroom discussion about text in hopes that talk enhanced understanding. More recently, Vygotsky (1978) produced evidence of the importance of social talk in learning. It is through this social interaction or discussion that students construct and negotiate meaning of text. What constitutes social interaction or discussion is what leads some teachers to disagree. The literature on discussion has classified it into two types: recitation and discussion.
