Media Seek Professors For Expertise, Mark D. Weinstein Dec 2016

Media Seek Professors For Expertise, Mark D. Weinstein

News Releases

When big stories hit the airwaves, statewide media are calling upon Cedarville University professors to interject their expertise so Ohio residents better understand the issues. And, with this happening at a regular rate, it’s a wonder how the professors from Cedarville’s history and government department teach their classes.

But they do.

During the first four months of the 2016-17 academic year, Cedarville faculty, staff—and some students—participated in 399 media interviews — an increase of 105 interviews from the same time one year earlier. And, the faculty from the history and government department handled 59 percent of the media work.

Through The Looking Glass: How The Mass Media Represent, Reflect And Refract Sexual Crime In Ireland, Michael J. Breen Nov 2016

Through The Looking Glass: How The Mass Media Represent, Reflect And Refract Sexual Crime In Ireland, Michael J. Breen

Irish Communication Review

The publication of the Sexual Abuse and Violence in Ireland (SAVI) report (McGee, 2000) was a landmark event in the documenting of sexual crime in Ireland. The core of the report was based on the results of a survey of more than 3,000 members of the general public about their attitudes and beliefs and their own lifetime experiences of sexual violence. Commissioned by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre and carried out by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, the report chronicled as never before the extent of sexual abuse and violence in Ireland.

Failure Of Multiculturalism? Immigration, Radical Islamism, And Identity Politics In Europe, Fatos Tarifa, Monica Di Monte Nov 2016

Failure Of Multiculturalism? Immigration, Radical Islamism, And Identity Politics In Europe, Fatos Tarifa, Monica Di Monte

International Dialogue

This paper addresses the issue of how Europe’s ethnic and cultural mix is changing drastically by the large numbers of culturally diverse, especially Muslim immigrants, as well as problems that Western European governments face today as they try to deal with unintended consequences of their liberal policies of multiculturalism. In light of this discussion, radical Islamism and identity politics are seen as long-term challenges for all liberal democracies. We argue that extremist voices among the right-wing populist parties in many Western European countries opposed to immigration and increasingly mobilized around the issue of Muslim minorities, may spur resentment and political …

Mapping Reality: An Introduction To Theatre, Charlie Mitchell, Michelle Hayford Oct 2016

Mapping Reality: An Introduction To Theatre, Charlie Mitchell, Michelle Hayford

Michelle Hayford

This book seeks to give insight into the people and processes that create theatre. Like any other world—be it horse racing, fashion, or politics—understanding its complexities helps you appreciate it on a deeper plane. The intent of this book is not to strip away the feeling of magic that can happen in the presence of theatre but to add an element of wonder for the artistry that makes it work. At the same time, you can better understand how theatre seeks to reveal truths about the human condition; explores issues of ethics, gender, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and spirituality; and exists …

The Extent Of Implicit Bias In Gifted Students: Utilization Of The Iat To Inform Diversity Education, Adrienne Coleman, Kyle Thomas '15 Oct 2016

The Extent Of Implicit Bias In Gifted Students: Utilization Of The Iat To Inform Diversity Education, Adrienne Coleman, Kyle Thomas '15

Publications & Research

The National Association for Gifted Children position statement on “Identifying and Serving Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Gifted Students” suggests that educators need to change their view of CLD students from a “deficit to a strength perspective”. In addition, it states that “schools should create support programs to help gifted students from diverse backgrounds develop strong academic identities, learn coping strategies for dealing with negative peer pressure and discriminatory practices, and gain resiliency for responding to challenging life circumstances”. One approach to support and retain CLD students that can be utilized by both educators and gifted students is understanding one’s …
