There has been no systematic study of the effectiveness of broadcasting by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since the advent of TV and the nation-wide telecasting of the Annual and Semi-Annual General Conferences of the Church each April and October. This study was an attempt to determine to what extent personal contacts, as a part of student recruitment, acquainted high school seniors of 1958 with Brigham Young University and influenced them in their enrollment. Opinions of college freshmen who were graduated from high schools visited by a B.Y.U. public relations representative were elicited by mail questionnaire. Respondents were asked to list the means through which they became "acquainted" with the University. They were also asked to list what "influenced" them to attend. This study was proposed to analyze articles referring to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the national magazine press. A "symbol coding" form of content analysis was used, in which each pertinent word or name was categorized, counted as indulgent or deprivatory and classified as to the thematic nature of the text.

The home of the Provo Times and Enquirer was a typical Mormon town founded on the east shore of Utah Lake in 1849. While some Gentiles (non-Mormons) had moved into the area by 1873 when the first newspaper appeared, the community was still dominated and controlled by members of the Latter-day Saint Church, which was the cause of some tension.

The chief purpose of this investigation is to determine the elements of speech style, the motive appeals, and the use of the elements of interest which play the most characteristic roles in twelve of Parley P. Pratt's sermons. While all the speeches that Pratt delivered have not been studied, since there are likely hundreds of them of which we have no record, it is thought that this study is sufficiently broad to warrant the conclusions that the writer has drawn.

The purpose of this study is to measure the amount of social distance found in a typical Mormon community, and to investigate the influence of the so-called "Mormon Church" upon the prejudices of its members towards other races and religions. It also aims to experiment with a techique for re-conditioning social distance in order to increase the degree of sympathetic understanding of persons for other groups of people.
